I was just about to start a build, but decided to check for any issues first. Issue #16155 says the 2.2.4 build is broken on Debian 12 and derivatives including Ubuntu 22.04.

I love this comment on the issue:
IIRC Debian does evil nonsense to some but not all of the override mechanisms for where packages go, so after 71216b9, we probably hit one of the ones where it doesn't override it, and things end up in site-packages not dist-packages. (See also).
This explains the insanity. So basically, Debian monkeypatches only distutils for this, and not relying on distutils thereby produces unexpected results.

And, for the record, from Issue #16156 where regular building on Debian/etc should be a feature:
How will this feature improve OpenZFS?

We won't look like clowns when we do releases like we did in #16155.

This looks like an excellent read, another cautionary tale about how distribution patching can make everyone's lives harder, if you needed more after the libxz vuln from OpenSSH being patched with systemd, and the prior OpenSSL random number bug.
