View Full Version : John Carmack On Rage & Doom 4 For Linux

I emailed John Carmack of iD Software to see whether or not they intended to release both Rage and Doom 4 on Linux. He responded:
It isn't a launch platform for us, but an executable may still show up.
Anyways, I figured that some of you may have been interested in this so I figured I'd post this here. For those who didn't see the new E3 trailer for Rage, you can view that here:

Also according to John Carmack (from a small interview), as good as Rage looks, while Doom 4 runs on the same engine, it is suppose to look a lot better. Details on that can be found here:

EA is not iD Software's publisher so I'm not sure if that little fact will hinder any Linux port developments.

It better show up. At least, before EA buys out Id. :D

Not likely... If anything, Blizzard/Activision/VU will do that since they already have a relationship there... ;)

Who was it that said iD could do anything they saw fit?
Heh... Are YOU going to tell one of the mainline Independent studios that can self-publish if they so saw fit, take it to ANY publisher they see fit to do so, that they CAN'T do what they've done? I wouldn't, even if I was Vivendi. It's just not a good thing to do.Now those are some news, indeed! Activision is also the publisher of choice for id and they don't mind them releasing their games commercially for Linux (nor their engines as GPL code)
Oh right. You. ^_^

I'm quite positive we'll see GNU+Linux support for idTech5. For Doom3, iD was primarily responsible for the Windows and Linux version, with the mac and xbox ports being done elsewhere. The latest Carmack masterpiece is even more portable than before, and I suspect if they release on the Mac, they will release on Linux. There's a good chance that the Mac port might be there at launch, so as to bolster the engine's portability claims, (frankly I hate the mac), but like doom 3, the linux port will probably be (at most) a few months late.
JC's response is typical in that he doesn't promise anything.
As long as for Mac and PS3 the engine has to use OpenGL there should be no real problem to release a Linux client. Usually ID does not use 3rd party tools like others so licencing problems should not be problematic too. Also wine can run the Win versions of the last games very well too - just because no D3D was used and the OpenGL wrapping is really fast.

I find it interesting how he mentions the different platforms that id tech 5 can run on as "pc, mac, x360 and ps3". That means that by "pc" he means both windows and linux, I assume.

Sadly, 'PC' means Windoughs, in this context.

And, until they're bought out, they will continue to do so- and perhaps AFTERWARDS. John Carmack's got an interesting take on cross-platformness- views it as critical to ensure there's less busted code in their engine and the titles they do with it. He's not wavered in that since early on. Moreover, he's done work for the FOSS community in the past- important stuff. I know, I worked on the same project with him, Gareth Hughes, and others. It's where we had our first FOSS GLX driver framework.

Which is why I'm surprised that some map editors aren't released on Linux.
I bet we could do some real interesting things if we could just get some kind of map editor. (An embedded random generator for some kind of randomized maze level. Sure it may be some kind of security hole that'll get patched in the next version, but until then, it's an interesting battle.)
It's good to see that at least one company has faith in us for coming up with fixes and new ways to tinker.
It's also nice that we have people who care about this community willing to do things with and for the community.

Well we we're promised a wxWidgets UnrealED, but does anyone who has torrented that 6 gigs know if that's the case? I'm would have hoped idStudio considered that or similiar api, or gosh, sdl, but who knows?

Usually tools for modders, custom content creators, etc. arent given that much attention in their windows ports, so much less emphasis is gonna be given to a linux counterpart. The only editor that runs in linux is probably radiant, and that because it was released for free. I dont think idStudio will be ported to linux. Nowadays, even carmack as he stated, uses the xbox360 devkit as the main development toolset, and from then on works on the different platforms.

Well, there is one such editor for id games and engines, GtkRadiant (http://www.qeradiant.com/cgi-bin/trac.cgi) IIRC even id officially uses it internally for their titles. Ohh, and even some distributions package it and have it available in their repos.

but problem is, gtkradiant is now being phased out by id in favor of the new idstudio, which frankly, it was about time. Id touts this new tool as "something revolutionary" when in reality other engines have had it for a while now, the cry engine 2 sandbox editor being the most recent one. radiant by now is ancient.

As for UT3, I'll believe only what I see, or, in that case, I'll believe only what I can run.
In other words, I'll get those games as soon as a native linux client is officially available.
But I feel confident ID will do it in less time than Epic for UT3, because they are used to port all their games to linux. And so I'm used to buy all their games because there is a linux support. :D
No linux support, no business with me.
