Tomorrow we'll have a story about the Linux version of Boxee, a "social media center" that's based upon X-Box Media Center. In the mean time though check out http://www.boxee.tv/

The Boxee company though has allowed us to give out invites for the private alpha testing going on for the Linux version. Right now Boxee is only available for Ubuntu 7.10 and Ubuntu 8.04.

So if you're interested in trying out this new Linux media center application (for free), post your email address in this thread along with a simple (or a lengthy one works too) explanation as to why you'd like to test Boxee. Then we'll email you out invites. You also must have at least five valid posts in the Phoronix Forums to be elgible.

Can we pm you the email addy instead? Not really crazy about having my email addy posted in the forums?

Oh yeah, sure. Or if you use the email address associated with your forum account, I can get it that way too, just say in your post.

If you are using Ubuntu 7.10 or Ubuntu 8.04 and would like to test out this Linux media center application, check out this thread on the Phoronix Forums (http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11765).

You can also download the source so your not limited to Ubuntu.

Always nice to see some competition, even amongst open source applications. I'd like to give Boxee a shot as well.
I suppose you (Michael) as an admin can see my e-mailaddress?

Thanks!

You may have a bit of an issue getting to work on openSUSE 11.0 64-bit. It's simple enough to fix though. Have a look at this thread http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=34542&page=3 to get an idea of what you have to do.

I would really like to try this out. I've been a huge fan of XBMC, but the only thing lacking is TV support.

My email should be associated with my account. Thanks!

Thanks Michael,

I hope I didn't waste an invite on you. Just to let other people know, the linux release is for 32bit only. I have a 64bit system and thus cannot install.

Although, I am considering a dual boot to test this thing out, it seems pretty exciting.

You could build it from source for 64-bit.

Hey, I hope not asking for an invite but some infos is ok here too =)
If you want to awnser them anyway in the story anyways that's fine for me =)

You said it brings rtorrent, does that mean it has a torrent frontend? That is something that has been lacking for xbmc!
Also do you know if there are plans to backport some non python features into the xbmc edition for the xbox? It is kinda sad seeing all the work going into other platforms while the xbox itself still is a kickass machine for a media center

I'm a longtime Mythtv user that made the pepsi switch from gentoo to Ubuntu two years ago and would love to give Boxee a look-see. My Ubuntu box is my media portal to the world; it's connected to projector mounted in my living room and on my wall it takes me all over the internet... as well as permitting me to play Quake Wars with preternatural visual acuity.

Looks interesting. Kind of annoyed with MythTV's frontend system at the mo (I have a big ass GF card and you're not using eye candy why??) so wouldn't mind putting a new contender through its paces if there are invites left.

See how it compares to the original XBMC and the Clutter based 'gloss-mc'.

I'd love to compare it with my Mythboxes. But to be honest, i'm not meeting the requirements of minimal 5 posts. I'm reading this site for some time now, but never had anything to contribute. Because I really don't like people to enter needless trash on forums to reach somekind of thresshole, i'm not trying to get those 5 posts this week. Could you grand me the invite if I promose to contribute to these forums from now on :)? With al the talk about videocards en mediacenters lately it will be an easy promise to keep.

If possible, I'd like to get invited as well. I'm not sure if I'm that big of a poster to the site, although I'm a bit active on the ATI side. I want to try this and see how it compares to MythTV :)

Thanks!

Please add my forum account email to this list please.

I have ordered a DVI to component cable as part of my third generation HTPC. I hope to test all the HTPC functions by the end of the month or at the most, by end of September.

For those who don't my setup: GIGABYTE GA-MA69G-S3H (ATI x1250), RCA 52" HDTV (projection, 1080i). I also have a AVerMedia AVerTV Combo PCIe for decoding/encoding but may switch if the new drivers aren't up to the tasks in *nix distros.

Thanks! I have signed-on.

Interestingly enough, some friends and I have been trying to figure out how to port our viewing habits, queues, and at least our collections to friends and connections. Such as if I am going to record the new episode of The Office this Thursday, someone could see my intent and go oh, I need to record or watch that as well.

I've been following your site for a few months, but since I'm not much of a forum guy, I haven't registered. However, I'm extremely intrigued with this Boxee project, and seeing this opportunity, I;d say it was as good a time as any to take it and sign up.

I have been looking for a good Media Centre for Linux for quite some time now. The only one I personally like is XBMC, and since this Boxee project builds upon it I'd really like to take a look. If there you have any invites left I would greatly appreciate getting in on this. Thank you :)

Long time reader, first time poster hoping to get in on some Boxee goodness.

My story:

Since building my HTPC about 5 months ago I've tried every app under the sun (MythTV, Vista MCE, MediaPortal, Meedios, Elisa). My recent fav was Elisa but I've recently felt let down by their apparent wavering with regards to linux support. They've released 4 versions in the last month for XP/Vista and couldn't have been bothered to build a single package for any distro.

Anyway, I was just about to go back to myth when I read about Boxee a few days ago. I was super interested in it, and anxiously awaiting my first opportunity to try it out.
