View Full Version : Linux Game Publishing domain sites "down" because of ISP woes...

It appears that the previous ISP raised the rates on the service and LGP decided to change providers from them to BT, based on relatively (Compared to the rate hike the other ISP was charging...) cheaper rates and the promise of 24-hour or less activation time having been given to them at the main location. Unfortunately, it seems BT, over promised and severely under delivered on it and they're stuck, ISP-less right at the moment as BT flails about trying to get it's act together on the matter.

It's my understanding that everyone in the UK offices are trying to get a backup plan up and going, but it's taking considerably longer than planned to get it all lit.

Will a hosting provider work in the meantime? and/or putting the domain on a forwarding link?

Thanks for the update Svartalf, I know I was starting to get concerned.

They could try to put something on freehostia. hehe...

But to be serious for a moment, thanks for the info and hopefully LGP fixes it up.

Sadly enough, the latest X3 beta time-bombs today.
No LGP sites and mailing lists, no X3 update.
... and no X3 for me :( *

* My wife wants to thank the powers to be for downing the X3 beta :)

Good thing LGP's online content protection scheme (http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=12526) isn't live yet...

Heh... Indeed. Unfortunately, I don't know if you can get all the AAA players to sign off on porting deals without something like this in place.

In some other thread, a guy who said he was a beta tester for Sacred Gold said the game worked while LGP was down, so maybe it's not THAT bad.
But seriously, I thought that such a mess is only possible in my country with our Telco monopoly ;)

Yeah.

X3 beta still works for me, even though I've passed the beta time-bomb limit. I wonder if LGP implemented a time-bomb kill switch.

Spoke too soon; Beta expired :(
Beyond that, I cannot even access LGP's temporary front page ("we are not dead; we are just pining for fjords...")
I assume that Tuxgames/LGP have being moved to the new ISP?

Yeah... I think I read somewhere that it sort of "cached" your time offline but eventually you have to go online.

To be honest, (I'd venture and guess that) this problem could be circumvented by building a new libc (with a hand modified gettimeofday) and preload it before X3 starts.

... But hopefully LGP will resume normal operation before my X3 addiction kicks in :)

Well, depends on how you see it. LGP surely does not see it as a "problem". ;)

I wonder how long it takes before hackers get through this one. All those dumps on strace and stuff are going to make things easier for them.

I should clarify that X3 doesn't include the copy protection (at last as far as I know) and I'm only talking about keeping my -legit- copy of X3-beta alive, for testing reasons (of-course!) until the next beta is out.

If they don't have a new beta ready, the site being up or down won't make a difference... it is a beta after all & if they have all the feedback they need for that version of the beta, it wouldn't make sense for it to not expire.

Actually, he's pushed out beta spins that all they do is extend the timebomb on other titles in the past. It all depends on how close the game's to completion as to whether or not you do one or not. One of the beta testers stepped on an 11th hour bug in Ballistics- I want the testers on MY projects to keep beating the hell out of the thing until we determine we're at Gold status on the thing- I can never have enough feedback. ;)

Heh... I guess I need to get in touch with him for my new access for the system as it's now set up so I can start putting the wraps on Bandits... :D

IIRC I think it goes like half a month or 3 before needing that check.

Pining for the fjords... someone at LGP's a Monty Python fan... ^_^

There's probably going to be at least one more spin of a beta there- I've fixed a handful of sound playback issues and rendering issues (If you're one of the testers that logged a problem report, please do me the favor of re-trying your problems you reported and logging a note of thumbs-up or thumbs down on each so I can reverify I've caught your bug when it DOES come out... :D) but there's still a few narfy rendering issues and the final sound issues remaining so there's at least ONE more beta before the RC one comes out most likely.

Does bandit use the same soft-OpenAL as X3?
I seem to be hitting some weird X3 only issues with sound that I cannot reproduce on other SDL based games (D3/Q4/ETQW, UT2K4) and other alsa applications.

I do remember some posting about sound issues, though I remember posting a bug as mine was a little different than others. I will provide updated feedback on that ... positive or negative. :)

Not yet. Need to move the build environment over to it like X3 already has (The current beta is still using the OLD SI implementation which is a source of part of the sound issues) and clean up some issues with the video player lib's selection of sound APIs- once I do that, I should have most of the anomalous sound playback failures squared away and only be looking for cleanups for where it doesn't gracefully downgrade functionality when it has issues with things.

I'm not tied to the mantis buglist for X3, so I don't know the nature of the bug- would you PM me what it was doing on sound? It might be the same set of problems and I can tip that team off when I get back into IRC here in another day or so...

Heh... There's several someones that're that in the group, myself included... ;)

"...Bereft of life, it rests in peace, if you hadn't nailed it to the perch, it'd be pushing up the daises..."

That was such a gem of a rant- and it's one of my favorite performances from Cleese.
