Phoronix: NVIDIA's OpenGL 3.0 Linux Driver?

Last week OpenGL 3.0 and GLSL 1.30 were released during SIGGRAPH 2008. In that article we expected NVIDIA would be first to provide an OpenGL 3.0 driver due to NVIDIA's involvement with the Khronos Group and their much rumored "Big Bang II" project, but we had no official comment from them at the time of publishing...

they don't ship the drivers but that they are downloadable

That is a joke of an answer...

I didn't know nVidia was involved with the Khronos Group, but seeing that explains a lot about why the CAD/workstation group seems to have a predominate position when it comes to OGL architectural decisions. Big bucks in that segment...certainly more than in gaming for Linux.

It makes sense that there is no linux OpenGL 3.0 driver yet. There is still one part missing: a means to get an OpenGL 3.0 context. At the very least, we'll have to wait until that functionality is added either to a updated specification of GLX or as a new GLX extension. This is handled in Windows via the WGL_ARB_create_context extension.

That sounds plausible, and nVidia should have at least mentioned that as the reason the new Linux driver is not yet available.

Except it isn't Nvidia but some PR firm with no idea what the question was about...
