I've received a request to find out what the most popular / important Linux games are to you. For those that play any games on their Linux OS, please share the titles below. Once we have a nice list of games, we'll then set it up for a voting process.

While I don't normally play any games, I'll start by listing Enemy Territory: Quake Wars :)

Note: If you're playing games within WINE, just list WINE but the Windows game being run is not needed.

In addition to playing quite a few games in WINE, I play:

- Regnum Online - best native MMORPG for Linux so far, surprised nobody here plays it.. You should do an article on it Michael :)
- Urban Terror - Much better than CS for me ;)
- RTCW and W:ET - for the Woflenstein fan in me :P
- Teeworlds - Quite the fun little online game, also surprised no one here plays it..
- Savage 1 - Who can go for long without this one? :P I really want to buy the second part, but money issues prevent me from doing so..

I guess thats it.. I will post again if I find something I missed :P

(unsorted)
Already released
-Quake 3 Arena
-Frozen Bubble (I just love it :D)
-Penumbra (It's really awesome)

Announced:
-Shadowground :)

But I can't say which is the best. Even that list is only a top 3/4. I also love d3, et:qw, q4, ut2k4, ss1+1,5+2, nethack, . That's the advantage of Linux as a gaming platform: We get few games, but very good games :)

Got into Tremulous again. Forgot how much the battles suck. Basically all everyone does is build a bunch of crap in their bases and wait. Fun game nonetheless.
Still, Warsow and Nexuiz are the top favorites. If fglrx were to seriously break those games I don't know what I would do.

-Frozen Bubble (I just love it :D)

Are you kidding me? This is also a favourite of mine. Gotta love tossin' 'em coloured balls. :D

Other games I like to play:
WINE - ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS - DOOM3 - SAVAGE 2: A TORTURED SOUL - PENUMBRA (both installments are just great) - OPEN ARENA - SECRET MARYO CHRONICLES - SUPER TUX KART (although a real physics engine would do this game good) - MEDAL OF HONOR: ALLIED ASSAULT - ...

played doom3 and quake4 completely in linux :). addictive games : frozen-bubble, neverputt, bzflag (on lan), cannonsmash (its a wonderful 3d table tennis game), chromium b.s.u., neverball (too difficult and frustrating for me :p), armagetron(ad), supertux, pingus, and last but not the least, quake3arena. Sorry if I missed out on any, but in short, there I find no dearth of quality games in linux, eventhough I would like to have some more. And these games are by-and-large perfect - I had nothing more to ask.

Speaking of wine, I have also played the entire game of portal through steam. Occasionally slow, but by-and-large very good. Pretty amazing how far wine has come. I was also amazed when one of the racing games I am addicted to - test drive unlimited, ran near perfectly on wine 0.9.55 (too bad it got borked later in 0.9.57, and guess it was fixed in wine 1.1.0) - a beautiful game, but it seems badly ported from console to pc. Although I don't play Need for Speed any more, last time I saw nfs underground play very well.

I just played Nexuiz for the first time about 2 weeks ago, and I'm hooked. I was always hesitant because the screenshots didn't look too good. Now that I've played it, I like it more than Warsow and Alien Arena combined. It's a really fun game, and the graphics are much better than I anticipated.

The funny part is, I wouldn't have tried it had I not seen the YouTube videos of it.

Oh, and the best game on Linux is clearly Neverball :)

Here is my list, though I don't play all the games all the time, I DO play every now and then pretty much all of the following:

Commercial:

Quake 2 through 4
Unreal 1 (under UT99) and many other mods (Xidia/Operation Napali)
UT99
UT2K4
RTCW
Doom 3 and D3 RoE
Neverwinter Nights (I have also SoU and HotU)
Shogo MAD (the Hyperion version)
Serious Sam (first encounter)
Penumbra (both games)

Open Source

Battle for Wesnoth
Frozen Bubble
Open Arena (I still like some elements better in Q3A, tho)
Urban Terror
Super Tux
Super Tux Cart
Neverball/Neverputt
Free Droid RPG (what can I say, I do like it)
GNOME/KDE Games (especially solitaire and Mahjong)

Lastly, lots of Wine, I won't go into which games I do play under Wine (as requested by Michael).

Hey...

Ever since it vanished from the repos in Fedora, I have been longing for it (though I know I can still install the Fedora Core 2 rpm), it is my understanding that the game has been largely unmaintained.

I also have, though do not play them as much, not to mention one has a complete substitute:

Rune for Linux
Soldier of Fortune for Linux
Unreal Tournament 2003

RagingDragon

Games I currently play somewhat regularly:

Quake 4
Doom 3
Unreal Tournament 2004
Sauerbrauten
Warzone 2100
Battle for Wesnoth

Commerical games I'd like to purchase in near future:

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
Never Winter Nights

I also plan to experiment with Nexuiz, Glest and Freeciv. I'll eventually get around to trying the other open source FPS games, and I'm always looking for good strategy games (though time limits my ability to actually play them...:(). At some point I'll probably look at TORCS, x-plane and flight gear.

Michael, this is not fair, there are simply too many games a single person can care to have, even if you don't play them all the time... How could I have forgotten three other games (two commercial, one free) such as:

*Glest (very well done, if only its map editor was easier to use [or there was a 3D based map editor] and I'd very much appreciate a campaign, there's plenty with the current two factions to come up with a campaign, problem is if it does support scripting)

*Heretic II, I loved this game back in the day, and simply forgot about it.

*Hexen II, I know though not "officially" ported there are native binaries to run it on Linux (I simply never cared, but maybe I'll install it again just for kicks)

If I'm not mistaken, I think Linux games had an updated to it about a month ago, although I couldn't find the changes it made, if any.

Right now I'm using openSUSE 11, but Gentoo also provides a functional ebuild for it. I emerged it myself on an AMD64 system about 3 weeks ago.

IIRC one of the problems with the game was that (apparently) it didn't work right with newer versions of OpenAL. I'll have a look around, though.

I like games like ankh where you solve things.
I'm thinking about grabbing a copy Jack Keane since it's my kind of games.
The only thing about that kind of games is that it's only real fun the first time you solve it. (but it's the most entertaining game genre)

Planning on getting ET:QW when my newer system is more stable.

I do play Counter-strike 1.6 via steam via Wine.
I find using steam a bit of a pain, plus when it's stacked on top of Wine.

I also use dosbox to play older titles such as:
Carmageddon (Still my favorite game!!)
Blood
Simcity 2000(DOS)
Syndicate Wars

Mind you I am using ubuntu and I do fairly often download random games from add/remove applications menu.

Tuxmath keeps me from rusting
GFCE Ultra is a must if you like NES games.
I use also use ZSNES.

Again, if the issues are resolved on my ATI rig with Ubuntu's 8.10 release I'll be a very happy camper playing ET:QW (Not a camping gimp)

I have yet to find 2 copies of UT2004 for me and my roomate to play.

Whenever you play a game in Wine, make sure that you write to the developer and let them know that there is interest in running their game on Linux. If we don't let them know that we want Linux-native games, then they will never write them.

I would add emulators for consoles. Linux had it's share and ( even if it might be questionable )... plays games :D .

That said I had around here besides OA... ut99/2k4... and some of the older quake games. They are though no more installed ( need space for other things ).

Will there be a list of all the mentioned games? I've seen some flashing by which I should try out once upon time ( more brainer games than shooters I mean ).

I'm not much of a gamer, but I did buy Doom 3 because of the Linux support, the same with nwn + both exps. These days though, I mainly play Civ IV through Wine, and I'd love to get football manager working. Other than that it's old games like sam & max hit the road, full throttle, and Warcraft 3.. So I mostly use Wine for my games.. I often find the open source games a bit.. boring, sorry. Too often they feel like half-hearted clones of old bestseller games. I do mean to try out this Nexuiz-game when I'm back home, my old laptop which I use right now is hardly capable of pulling compiz smoothly ;)

Titles I play(ed) and think these are important to me on Linux.

Most importantly ETQW and almost every ID title such as the Quake or Doom series with a native Linux port.
ioQuake3/Qfusion - because a lot of good games such as UrbanTerror or Warsow are based on it. Again ID Software is responsible for this.
Savage 2, Eschalon, Rain-Slick, Darwinia, Defcon, Uplink, Penumbra, etc. - because these are great titles and were developed from Indi developers which plays an important role in this whole Linux Gaming market.
EVE-Online - It's actually cedega/wine based and not really that great supported, but still one of the few MMOGs out there which bundles a Linux package together.
WINE - (Starcraf, Warcraft, etc.)

ethana2
09-02-2008, 02:43 PM
Nexuiz: completely awesome but at the same time very traditional
Tremulous: buggy as crap and old as moses, but still quite unique and strategic
Urbanterror: because plasma weapons aren't all that satisfying when you really just want to shoot things up.
Warsow: looks like it would be awesome, if, you know, it worked. Meh, I'll just blame nVidia..

Doom 3
Doom II
Duke Nukem 3D (eduke32)

I don't play as much PC now as before, but not only because I just use Linux (can't find the time..). Still very interested in gaming, though. The most important games for me are the Quake-series, primarily Q3A. id Software is very important to Linux gaming and me, as they release prior engines under GPL and I like the gameplay, so I always buy their games even though I don't play them through ("I'll complete it another time"..).

My list:

id Software games (+ games by partners)
Darwinia
Warsow
NWN
Neverput
UT2004
Chromium B:S:U
Majesty Gold
Typespeed ;)
WINE (only for Blizzard games except WoW)

I haven't bought it yet, but I'm very excited about the Penny Arcade game(s), so I'm sure that would be high on my list. If Blizzard made native Linux clients for SC2 & D3, I think they would maybe rank higher than id!

Lastly I like and own two older shareware games, Marble Blast Gold and Mutant Storm, but gave up trying to get them to work on a modern Linux system... Not so cool.

Curious what you have in mind, Michael! :)

I'd also like to have more adventure games on Linux, the genre itself seems to be making a comeback (Ankh, Jack Keane, Penumbra), but I'd definitely like other titles as well (such as Longest Journey and the like) or Action-Adventure titles (a la Prince of Persia, God of War et al. [of course not those specific titles, much less console-exclusive titles]). Gaming seems to be becoming saturated with Action shooters and MMOs.

So true FPS games have been done to death now, where are the RPG's and RTS's already? :(

While letting know the producers of the game that you'd like their game natively, chances are that if it runs in Wine is good enough for them.
If a company cares about the game running in Wine, they don't care about the game running on Linux (wee, paradox!). Wine is way too volatile for the type of gaurantee developers/publishers would give, so those that would say "Wine is good enough" really doesn't care if Wine runs it or not.

Being officially supported by something like Cedega or CrossOver (where game compatibility is gauranteed for certain titles) would be something else, but then, with the work needed to get it working properly and get an official gaurantee of continued compatibility.. may as well just make a native Linux port at that point (especially if you have the hard part done with porting to GL+AL/whatever with an OSX port).

Err, Penumbra has native versions of both games, or did you buy the Windows version before migrating to Linux?

I'm sad that Darwinia does not get a nod here. :( It's a mighty fine game, you know?

Adding to the list, Mupen64 Plus and Mame. Ironically, playing the same game.

I will say is that, what Linux as a platform has in abundance is shooters. Almost every shooter in Linux is a derivative of Quake 3. lol.

Just registered.

I mostly play X-Moto now. It's a 2D motor stunting game. The reason I play it so often is because a level only takes about a minute, so you can always start the game, hit Quick Play and do a few stunts if you're bored. And it's actually very challenging.

The more serious games I play are:

Free software:

Nexuiz
Sauerbraten
Warsow

Non-free:

Descent 2 (d2x)
Doom 3
Quake
Quake 3
UT
UT2004
Return to Casdtle Wolfenstein
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
Battlestar Galactica: Beyond the Red Line (might become free when released, but the demo isn't)

And in Wine: Half-Life series, Hitman series, C&C3, GTA2, Dungeon Keeper 2, and Scorcher.

I wonder if this thread is really about:

Native Linux games vs Wine games tally.

I'm certainly getting a gut feel that's how this article will focus on.

It's a very good game but without multiplayer support it lacks at bit... (can't wait for multiwinia though!)

Nexuiz is huge.
Enemy Territory on occasion.
Super Tux
TA Spring (I have trouble managing this properly, I wish there were a better linux front end for setting up games, managing mods and maps.)
Am waiting for Danger from the deep, it seems pretty cool.
I give BSG:BTRL and Vega Strike a shot on occasion. Used to be they taxed my graphics to much and weren't that playable, but I have a newer card now.
Lastly, that 3-D tanks game with the different weapons is pretty fun.

WOW! Smells like Crossfire spirit...
I read all the posts and I am really very happy with the response of all of you folks! Learned new game titles too:)

Most of the games I 'd like to mention are already here(Nexuiz etc..) except 2...

-RACER(http://www.racer.nl)
-No Gravity
-Sauerbraten (Only one friend told about it which is really unfair for this very well built modern 3D open source game)

For the commercial ones now I really don't think we should mention them here their companies can tell AMD to include their titles at Crossfire support.

I haven't used Wine, or any of it's derivatives, for gaming. I play the Linux ports of UT2004, Doom 3 and Quake 4, and I'll probably buy ET:QW too. I also play a variety of open source games.
