Phoronix: X3 Reunion Still Actively In Development

Back in July we shared that X3: Reunion, one of the latest PC game titles being ported to Linux by Linux Game Publishing, was still in development. This game continues on where X2: The Threat had left off (a game ported to Linux earlier by LGP) and was developed by Egosoft and released for Microsoft Windows in 2005. X3: Reunion was originally scheduled to be released in August of 2007 (and the LGP product page still reflects this earlier target date), but that clearly didn't happen...

good to hear that X3 is still alive..

on the one hand it's a bit disappointing that on Windows the next game X3-Terran Conflict will be release next week - but on the other hand after 18-19 beta releases I assume that the Linux version of X3-Reunion works pretty flawless - miles away from the buggy port on Mac OS X.

does anybody know, how to enter the beta testing? on X2-The Threat everybody who perordered the game could participate. Same on X3-Reunion?

Will the X3 linux port have any kind of copy protection? (though i know any kind of copy protection wont be as draconian as starforce :D )

LGP does not seem to be a very professionally run company to me. I've reported a supposed XSS vulnerability on their site two times _months_ ago, and they haven't done anything about it yet, putting their customer's login credentials and/or private data at risk.

For a demo of one of the vulnerabilities, have a look here (http://www.linuxgamepublishing.com/account.php?error=We+are+lazy+slackers+and+our+pag e+is+vulnerable+to+XSS&login=), here (http://www.linuxgamepublishing.com/newcustomeraccount.php?error=<script%20language="javascript">alert("security%20breach");</script>) or here (http://www.linuxgamepublishing.com/newcustomeraccount.php?error=%3cimg%20src%3d%22htt p%3a%2f%2fcoloss.us.to%2fballmer.jpg%22%3e).

Looks like LGP's site is down, maybe they are fixing it?

gosh, thats one picture i could live without.
The only way that picture could be better is if we could GIMP him a forked tounge! :D:D:D

Why LGP is down is that now that someone's released the vunerabilities into the wild some crackpot came across it and brought down the server. Way to go...
FYI, problems still aren't fixed, and it's back up as of my timestamp.

I don't think they care much about their on-line presence. It's probably down due to some totally different issues..

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated in any way with LGP.

While LGP does have a number of deficiencies (Slow releases, long beta testing, tendency to go MIA from time to time) one should remember the following:
A. Porting Windows games is -very- hard work. Especially games that were never designed with multi-platform in mind. (E.g. Direct3D)
B. LGP is very small, and I doubt that making Linux games is very lucrative. Don't blame them for not producing the same results as a multiple-million dollar studio.
C. LGP seems to be -very- responsive, when it comes to fixing bugs. I'd venture and guess that one of my bugs is to be "blamed" for the latest delay releasing X3. Other companies could have chosen to ignore the bug and try to solve it post release.
D. As for X3:TC I'd venture and guess that LGP will start working on porting it the second X3/Linux starts generating profits. In short, if you want X3:TC/Linux, -buy- X3/Linux. (AKA "Voting with your wallet")

I totally agree, even I would prefer that LGP should at least provide a reasonable release date.
We all know the arguments that the Windows version was released years ago, are now cheap as hell and and and.
But one should keep in mind, that the advantage of this port is (hopefully) getting a rock-solid high-performance version which the Windows users didn't had for a long time (and Mac users probably never). Furthermore you can save to setup windows system which must be eventually maintained and brings all the disadvantages which we know from an Windows OS.
Linux is a very efficient system. With good 3D drivers - speak: nvidia - it could be the perfect platform for gaming. This is worth to support it.
