I eagerly updated to 177.80. I'm still finding the cpu load unacceptably high.

I'm using:
fedora f9 x86_64
kde-4.1.2
NO special graphics effects! (no compiz, etc)

(--) PCI:*(0@1:0:0) nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GS rev 161, Mem @ 0xc6000000/16777216, 0xd0000000/268435456, 0xc4000000/33554432, I/O @ 0x00002000/128

This is particularly noticable when running akregator. Even though the display is not actively doing anything, akregator causes X to run 100% cpu for very long times.

This doesn't happen on free xorg nvidia driver.

This sounds like a fairly easy reproducable bug. Have you submitted a bug report with nvidia yet by firing off an email to linux-bugs@nvidia.com? If not please follow this guide on how to file a bug report http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678 and fire it off to the afore mentioned email address.
