I have a GeForce 4 MX:
(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX - nForce GPU] rev 163, Mem @ 0xfd000000/24, 0xec000000/26, 0xf3d00000/19, BIOS @ 0xfe000000/17
... and I'm planning an update to my distro, which will include xserver-1.5. Are there any plans on releasing an updated legacy driver with support for recent xserver releases?

You would probably be better off asking Nvidia that since they are the only ones that can answer that.

There already is (albeit a beta): http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=122139
Well the new 96.xx beta supports it. If you use Ubuntu or Debian you can use:
http://kanotix.com/files/install-nvidia-debian.sh
This can be even tried in live mode.
