<offtopic>Right now I'm mostly busy with Wine stuff and I'm quite busy. I hope to release a new NVClock sometime but I need a lto of new functionality (fanspeed on more geforce8/9/gtx cards) and other features and I don't have enough testers nor direct access to those cards.</offtopic>

Well if you need testing done 8200/8500/8800GT's don't be afraid to PM.

Thunderbird, a nvclock dev says he's having issues finding people to test nvclock on newer cards (Gforce 8 series and up). We kinda mucked up a non related thread so I thought I would start a separate thread here. Please list your cards that you have if you are willing to help out.

This week I will make some small changes to the cvs version of nvclock to let it dump some interesting fanspeed related registers. After that nvclock -D reports of all cards will be useful.

For now I'm interested in 'nvclock -D' logs of the latest cvs version on 8600gt/8800gt/9600gt cards which at this point don't have fanspeed control using the cvs version (so cards which don't use a ADT7473 sensor).

The cvs version can be obtained using:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@nvclock.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/nvclock login (there is no password, just hit enter)
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@nvclock.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/nvclock co -P nvclock

I have added some fixes and improvements to cvs like e.g. better memory bus width reporting and highly experiment fanspeed code for 8600gt/9600gt/9600gso boards. This fanspeed code needs to be tested as I don't know if it works already.

Note: the fanspeed mode was originally manual, but after changing it a few times, it is now auto.

Also, the GPU temperature is incorrect. nvclock shows 56 GPU/50 board while nvidia-settings shows 63 GPU/50 board. It appears that this board is indeed using the ADT7473. If desired I can force the GPU to various temperatures and report the difference.

It indeed appears that for various users the temperature of the ADT7473 differs between nvclock and nvidia-settings. Most of the time it is a difference of about 7C. If some people could report what differences they are seeing in various situations (e.g. use glxgears to heat up the card). Also mention which gpu you are using and what pci id (nvclock shows the pci id using -i).

I have added some more debug code for temperature sensors. Using the latest cvs version 'nvclock -d -T' shows both the lowlevel stuff nvclock sees and the stuff reported by NV-CONTROL (nvidia-settings uses this). I would like a couple of test runs on different cards with different temperatures as I want to find the correct offsets needed for each gpu model. (the pci id and gpu type is needed as well)

and GPU=45c board_temp=40c in nvclock. Also i am forcing 90%

On my card nvclock and nvidia-settings are now much closer, but there is still an occasional difference of 1C, which may be considered acceptable. Also, on a few runs of nvclock -T, the output was completely weird:

It is likely a rounding difference. The sensor outputs in more than 8 bits and right now I'm showing just the part in front of the dot/comma. I could also show the extra fraction but it isn't that important, you could say it is noise.

The correction values which I use right now for the internal sensor aren't correct on geforce8/9 cards. These values come from the bios but I might not using them correctly or don't have all values.

In short nvclock reads a 'raw' temperature and then has to convert it into the real temperature using something like: temperature = raw_temperate * slope + offset + correction. It would be interesting to know what rivatuner shows for some cards. In its diagnostics report it shows the values it uses.

Please retry using the latest cvs. It unlocks this feature (although I can't say if really all those laptops have it) on laptops from HP, Sony, Samsung and Zepto. Also show an updated nvclock -D output if nvclock says your laptop isn't supported. Note smartdimmer might have no effect on your laptop.

How latest is latest? The build that generated that output was pulled from the CVS server about 2 hours ago. The PCI ID is:

The easiest way to test if smartdimmer works for you is to edit src/backend/nvreg.h. For instance edit 'PCI_VENDOR_ID_ZEPTO'. Change its value from 0x1a46 to 0x1558. Then recompile nvclock and then try.

That tweak to the source results in complaints about it only supporting the 8x00 or less series.

Smartdimmer is only supported on certain (HP/Samsung/Sony/Zepto) laptops using a Geforce 6200/7x00Go/8x00Go. If you want support on your laptop contact the author.


I'll do a bit more digging around and see what I can find that might help.

Same result there - leave it with me for now in case I'm doing something stupid. I can see the code reference for the G94 chipset that the 9800M is based on so it should (in theory!) recognise it.

Edit: Now I can make some sense of the registers, it seems it may not be the smartdimmer stuff - the register that affects is already set to 100% :(.

Right now the code asusmes 0x400 is the maximum value which not be correct and laptop specific. Try to set smartdimmer to a lower version just to see if it has any effect on your laptop.

Fanspeed adjustment should now work on geforce 8600/9600 and perhaps some other cards using the cvs version. Support for 8800/9800 cards will follow quickly if I know for sure that the current code works. I need heavy testing of it. Myself I only have a fanless 8600gt.

Fan speed still works on my 8800GT, with the ADT7473 temperature sensor (it worked in the version from Ubuntu 8.10 already). I still need to test my 9500GT with the CVS version (the Ubuntu version wouldn't work at all). One note: it seems that the new fan speed is read too soon after setting it, as nearly always it shows the old speed as the new speed:

On most G92 cards temperature reading is broken but on yours it appears that the register works correctly (NV_20400 contains the right temperature). I will look at this when I have some more test data and won't be able to fix it in beta4 yet.

No need to hurry ;-) For the time being I use an older version of nvclock and add 23°C to the value it gives, to have the real temperature.
