I am having the same issues as described in this bug:
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=499 (Fan card @ full speed without any 3d application)
with my Connect3D X1800XT and SuSE 10.2
(
although "aticonfig --lsp" said this:

core/mem [flags]
-----------------
* 1: 594/693 MHz [overdrive, default state]
)

As suggested in the bugzilla I tried to downgrade to v.8.30.3.
But installation gave me the following error:

rm: cannot remove `Modules.symvers': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `*.o': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `*.ko': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `*.mod.*': No such file or directory

make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
make: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.18.8-0.1-obj/i386/default'

I understand this is an error related to Make.
However I'm really a linux noob and have no idea what to do now!

I don't think 8.30 will work with OpenSuSE 10.2... OpenSuSE 10.2 uses X11R72, which wasn't supported in 8.30, not to mention 10.2 also uses a newer kernel, etc...

You may want to try 8.35 once it's released this month.

Thanks Michael I'll try again with the new drivers, hopefully
it works then. But just theoretically, do you think I could
use SuSE 10.1 or 10.0 ?

SuSE 10.0 or 10.1 should work out. But downgrading a distribution all because of the GPU's fanspeed?

Yeah maybe to see if it works. I have dual boot so that's not a problem
really.
Anyway I'm not going to use it if my card is revving at 80% all the time. It's just too much of a waste, plus very annoying and noisy.
Also the way I see it there's no guarantee that this will work with the new driver(s) - though I do hope they fix it :)
