the point is a X1950 can't handel DX9C+Nvidia-extansion on WINDOWS!
so the X1950 with OpenGL2.1 on linux can't handel DX9C+nvidia-extansions on WINE!
and WINE is an spezial part of software ! WINE use OpenGL3 right now in the RADEON Code Padh!
Yes, on ATI cards only some NV extension are avaiable (eg. 3 for 1950 and 4 for 4850), but NV extensions isn't required for getting DX 9.0c effects in OGL 2.1! On ATI cards You have got ARB and EXT version of extensions required for simulate DX 9.0c effects! So I don't understand why WINE use OpenGL 3.0 in Radeon codepath, I think this is't a true (On 99,9% it isn't true), because all OpenGL 3.0 features aren't usage on current WINE Dx 9.0c applications.
You say about working SM3.0 effects on OGL2.1 only with NV extensions (it's not true!) and working this effects also on Radeons with support OpenGL 3.0, but these Radeons also don't have NV extensions! You are in wrong if You think, than on Radeon X1950 You can't simulate DX 9.0c effects, of course You can simulate all these effects ;) And next time please don't write wrong informations...

o yes.. i have a real option for you wait for the release !
You said the same thing about 9-2. And 9-2 sucked so hard it could suck start a B-52.
The correct answer for the fglrx driver is always: wait for the next release and deal with the suck drivers in the meantime.

ok nice writing-- But! 9-4 never comes out for the R500 X1950!
and 9-4 are the only driver how kills the Wine Bug!
so my Writing is True !

Be Happy! 9-4 kills the most of the bugs realy! ...
on my system 9-2 sucks to if i look a DVD its crashes my system!
i'm sorry abaut your 9-2 feeling I'M not use stable drivers!
in my Feeling BETA Drivers are much Better!

I'm not so sure. Mythfrontend plays fine but when I put anything in front of it, playback lags something shocking. Was fine with 9.2.
Atm I'm putting it down to the alpha status but I'm afraid 9.4 is looking like my turning point if fglrx doesn't impress me enough. :(

What ATI wine problem? My 4670 with 8.12 worked as well as I could hope. Anything platinum rated in wine's appdb worked as expected (Tiberian Sun, RR Tycoon 3, Red Faction etc). I got as far as running far cry pretty well on low res/effects but that's more a limitation of my lightweight card anyway right?
Put together my 1st Linux computer with ATI & am perfectly happy :) (No more pricy windows! :D )
What was the problem that I don't think I ever had?

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ stepping 03
ATI 4870 512M

Asus M3A-H/HDMI
Compiz on.

for wine you need OpenGL3 !
Just making sure this was said at least once during the message chain: that claim is utter crap. You don't need anything more than OpenGL 2 to normally run Wine. You might need a few OpenGL extensions like FBO's for some modern games but you *do not* need the whole OpenGL 3. This is a bit like saying every game requires DX11. (Which I've heard to be the rough equivalent of OpenGL 3)

Forget everything bad I said about this driver :-)
I said earlier, that there is problems running QW and savage2. Thats simply not true. I found out I got the same problem with 9.2... After a completely reinstall, everything works very fine! I have never ever got so smooth QW. I can even run it faster than in Vista.
With HD3650 mobility and 1280x800 i run QW beautiful with high settings. Nice. Thank you amd. Before with 9,2 I could only run the game in 1024x768 and with slightly lower settings.

I decided to try this driver and it fixes the /usr/lib64 hardcode path that I was forced to use in Arch Linux so that's good. Doesn't fix my EVE Online problems though, hopefully it's fixed in a later 9.4 or 9.5 driver.

Resizing windows is still SLOW and LAGGY with composite enabled (kwin4). It is pretty fast with composite disabled. Besides that, pretty solid driver. Cheers to AMD.

Resizing is slow even in radeon with EXA, in both Compiz and KDE. Compiz is far worse however. It's not entirely the drivers that are at fault here.

Hi. I tested this "magnificent" driver (9.4 Rc1) .
I tested smplayer with enabled composite and XV. I had hard dead lock system (when i resized window with video)!
So. Where stability is? I didn`t see any stabilize.
Under wine I still have problem with texture handler. ( I see one strange texture in left lower corner).
I have: radeon HD 2600 pro, wine 1.1.16, Xorg 1.4.x.

EDIT :
okay, savage2 feels much more smoother, mainly cause of the fps increase, something like 10-15fps (HD4850).
Anyway, one thing is bugging me, if this 9.4RC is stripped from support for legacy cards, why it's bigger than 9.2 ? :D

its bigger becourse they hold more files in it to support debian and xorg 7.2 7.3 they hat dev some xorg7.4 stuff and backport it to the 7.3 for debian!!!
so overall they support more platformes and have a much much better driver becourse the driver do not fail if there diverenz programm versions!
for me i use debian SID the driver works much better becourse the driver have more own files that not linket on the system files...

I don't think Kano's installer is supposed to work on Gentoo. I'm using Gentoo's "installer" (ebuild).
copy&rename the 582 ebuild. Change SRC_URI to this:
SRC_URI="${ATI_URL}/ati-driver-installer-8.60_RC1-x86.x86_64.run"
remove the xen-patch from the ebuild (look for epatch)
copy the files directory
copy the installer to /usr/portage/distfiles (or whereever your DISTDIR) resides
ebuild ebuild.ebuild manifest
and then update the driver:
quit X
eselect opengl set xorg-x11
emerge -u ati-drivers
eselect opengl set ati
reboot

There seems to be an issue, with 2.6.29-1-686 files?
It builds fine with 2.6.26-9-686.
I'm back to 2.6.26-9-686 & 9.3-fglrx.
<snip>
Dmesg is too big to post, 10,000 limit thingy. I can PM you it, if that would be useful?

Oh and yes, the header/tree stuff is installed, so I can compile modules.

Anyone tried this with World of Warcraft and the latest Wine (Not Cedega or Crossover)? If so, could you post screen shots? (In a building, outside and in an instance)

I don't think fglrx 9.3 supports kernel 2.6.29

Hi Yall,
thanks for that Tball and yes, I did know. :-)
So, I tried out the leaked 9.4-RC1, with a the latest official Debian 2.6.29-2 and that also failed to build....
@ Bridgman, I think the Debian guys, are on some sort of "new fangled way" of doing things, that breaks much stuff, according to this....
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=521515
You see this Kano?
I think I will stick with 2.6.26, for a bit.
fglrx-install log is....
