AMD solve the Wine Problem with Cat/Fglrx 9-4alpfa
I test this on Cat/Fglrx 9-4 8.60rc1 and Wine 1.1.16 with the benchmark Aquamark3
Aquamark looks super nice with the 9-4 much much much better than with the Catalyst 9-2.
there are still some errors like this :
"fixme:d3d_shader:print_glsl_info_log Error received from GLSL shader #177: "Fragment shader(s) linked, vertex shader(s) linked. \nWARNING: 0:2
: extension 'GL_ARB_draw_buffers' is not supported "
fixme:d3d_shader:print_glsl_info_log Error received from GLSL shader #180: "Fragment sha
: extension 'GL_ARB_draw_buffers' is not supported ""
But tis is Pointless becourse its looks soo Great!

It looks someone doesn't play fair and he's not so smart... All those lamenting and flaming people in 'AMD, I want super drivers now' threads, you sound like a children and nvidia or windows fanboys... AMD did great favor for us, because they released documentation. I won't even look at nvidia and their binary blobs.

o Yes i'm not so smart becourse my english is not so Good or in other text its Worst :-)
why sould i use 9-2 catalyst if the cat 9-4 alpfa works better ?
why sould i use the opensource driver if i need OpenGL3 and WINE support ?
in fakt the Opensource driver has OpenGL1,5 and will habe 2,1 but for wine this is not Good Entrue!
for wine you need OpenGL3 !

I also wonder. Is there a 'THE wine problem'? Isn't there more than one problem? Like an incomplete open-GL stack (compared to nvidia and what wine wants) etc.

AMD fixed the Driver problem... not WINE can make the next step and write new code for the AMD Carts!
in the past wine can't support fglrx becourse of bugs.. now they can up to the next bug they found...

That, or Nvidia-specific codepaths written by the Wine developers, or Nvidia drivers not following the OpenGL specs (GLSL-over-Cg compiler, I'm looking at you!)
Not that I'm defending Amd's OpenGL drivers (I've been bitten by enough bugs that it hurts), but the amount of badly written, Nvidia-only code out there is staggering. About half of the GLSL tutorials out there call *Cg* functions for $deity's sake! Not talking about obscure blogs and things like that, either, there tutorials exist in high-profile OpenGL-centric sites. Bah, I say.

but opengl1,4 and in futhure opengl 2.1 is not the winning part i think on wine you can'T win any cup with the opensource driver in the next 1 or 2 Years!

Thats not true the WINE DEVs has AMD/ATI codepaths to!
but in the past the ATI codepaths hang on DX8 and the DX9 lag on bug's in the fglrx!
i can make Pictures with old 8.10 catalyst and 9.1/9.2 catalyst and 9.4 catalyst...
and you will see not all is going right with the same wine 1.1.16!
OpenGL3 on the 9.1 driver brings a Boost in colorfull ans speed but the rendering is to dark becourse some textures not have the right gamma...
in 9.4 you can see the wine app in 99% near to the windows nativ app.

True. However, as AMD hardware becomes more popular and accessible in Linux, all this will inevitably change. Of course, if you ask me the desired thing to do would be to code around open source drivers instead of the blobs, but that's the FOSS fanatic in me talking :D.

Yep and that's good. The problem with designing code around the FOSS drivers is that, right now, you have to give up about 8 years of advancements in graphics. Even though I hate writing blob-specific code, the alternative is no GLSL, no FBOs, no PBOs - it's just not feasible! (especially so in Wine)
Granted, I'm talking from the perspective of high-end graphics. If all you want to do is write a 2d game or a bzflag clone, I guess it's fine (not great, but iyou can make it work).

Why are you not sharing these drivers?

The driver hasn't been leaked, unless it's on the backwoods of the internet (irc, newsgroups, etc). Nothing he posted is really news to me since on the bug report AMD said they found the problem and it normally takes 2-3 months for fixes to go in the driver. I'm content to wait for the official release since I only use wine to play games and I can patch wine to workaround the issue.

Because the betas are distributed under NDAs. People are not supposed to "pass them around", and Phoronix being the big ATI fansite it is, I doubt it will condone such a thing.

But once the memory managers and the new driver interfaces hit the streets there will be little reason to use the blobs if you're a desktop user (well, maybe if you got nvidia :p). All I'm saying is that the end goal should be to start developing with the open source drivers in mind as a priority.

Usually someone leaks them on the "dark" places. IRC and Usenet for example. Google doesn't find them, you have to know where to look. But it's nothing to go crazy about. If you find them, the result is simply a disappointment that comes earlier than if you had waited for the final version :D

OMG, this 9.4 RC1 driver is awesome. KDE 4.2 resizing is fixed! Its very very fast, no latency at all and with composition on.
XV video with compositing also works very smooth now. I don't got misplaced video output or anything odd. I don't even get crashes when playing a video in fullscreen??? :O
Is this really the driver version we have waited so long for? Is this really THE driver without disappointments?
Everyone waiting for this driver to be released really has something to be excited over.
<<If this is something I should not be talking about, feel free to delete my post. I don't know how phoronix / ati takes thiese discussions.>>
EDIT:
Actually resizing with compositing seems a lot faster than without composition :P That said, resizing isn't slow without compositing, don't worry.

I tried this one, but if i watch a (non hd) video with xv and compiz on then xorg eats up all the cpu even if it's only windowed. If compiz is switched off it's nearly perfect: very low cpu usage, but sadly there is tearing as well...

Hmm does your Quakewars run without problems? Everything is black for me ingame, and some buttons are hidden in the game menu before you hover the mouse over them. When you have hovered your mouse over them, they become visible. Its not every button though.
Nexuiz works fine. Penumbra works fine. World of goo works fine. Everyone with compositing.
Savage 2 have the same problem as Quakewars -> Everything is black. But if you shoot with something like a rocket, you can actually see the landscape with the glow of the rocket :P But hmm, lets hope the release will fix this.
Another problem I have come by, is that if I maximize (not fullscreen) a HD video, the movie becomes very laggy. But I'll survive. Anyway I always look at a movie in fullscreen or in a very little window.

no! on an nvidia you can use OpenGL2.1+nvidia-only-extansions to put DX9C into WINE! ...
the OpenGL2.1 in the Catalyst has no nvidia extansons!
in fakt Pure OpenGL2.1 is only DX9b!!!! shader2 not shader3! and the windows programs use nvidia only extansions like dinamic-wather in DX9c!
X1950 can NOT render dynamic-Wather! (hd2000-hd3000-hd3000 can render dynamic Wather)
so pure-OpenGL2.1=DX9b (not c )
OpenGL2.1+nvidia-extanions=DX9C!

EDIT:
Actually resizing with compositing seems a lot faster than without composition :P That said, resizing isn't slow without compositing, don't worry.
Care to share your xorg.conf?
I'm running KDE 4.2 with/without compositing and window resizing is still very slow. I've tried all the combinations of Kwin effects to no avail.
My xorg.conf settings are non-existant, I only set the Driver to fglrx.
Also, when you run fglrxinfo, is the OpenGL version 3.x or 2.1? Mine still says 2.1.

No, it isn't true :) OpenGL 2.1 is compatible with DirectX 9.0c (I know because I use this two standards and all works ok). I don't look on Wine code, but if they use NV extansion this is Wine team fault, with multi vendor extension all DirectX 9.0c features all avaiable on graphic cards with OpenGL 2.1 support (so SM 3.0 also).

Compiz problems, wine, crash when restart a session in kde4, sometimes not initialize correctly, etc..

try this with your X1900!!!!!
http://www.behardware.com/art/imprimer/616/
"With the Radeon X1000, ATI missed a function that was apparently required to support Vertex Shader 3.0,[...]
How is it possible for ATI to support Vertex Shader 3.0 without vertex texturing? It’s apparently a trick, or to be more accurate, the exploitation of a loophole in DirectX 9 specifications. Vertex texturing support seems to come from the support of vertex shader 3.0 and there are no specifically devoted caps that indicate its support or absence. A GPU manufacturer, however, has to specify which level of filtering is supported in the vertex shader (point sampling, bilinear filtering, anisotropic filtering etc.) to support the vertex shader 3.0. Then for each texture format, it must be indicated if it’s usable in vertex shaders. And this is where the loophole is. Microsoft forgot to make at least one of the formats obligatory. In other words, ATI tells DirectX to support vertex texturing in point sampling but doesn’t authorize it on any texture format. It’s rather subtle, but enough to pass all DirectX specifications and not support vertex texturing in practice while obtaining Vertex Shader 3.0 certification."
