I'm attempting to use the proprietary ATI driver with my x86 GNU/Linux Slackware 12.2 system with a Radeon Xpress 200 integrated in the mainboard.
I can use the system with the "radeon" driver which comes with the distro, however this only allows me to use 1024x768 -- I want to use 1280x1024, thus I installed the proprietary ATI driver.
The installation works, however when I attempt to start X, the display turns black, the monitor says the signal is out of range, and the system is unable to reset, ctrl+alt+backspace does not work, none of the console terminals are possible to switch to, and the computer stops responding to ICMP echos -- i.e. I'm assuming it has received a kernel panic.
If I attempt X -configure after installing the driver the procedure will fail with the error:

I have to uninstall the fglrx driver for X -configure to work again -- as such I'm assuming that as X atttempts to use fglrx to test the X server it crashes, but does not cause a kernel panic when only using X -configure, whereas startx or runlevel 4 causes a kernel panic.
I've tried numbers different versions of the driver now, including the most recent one, and very old ones.
Any ideas?
