I've searched around but can't seem to find the answer on this.
I'm using the livna rpms for my ATI Radeon 9550 card. With these drivers installed, is it possible to use beryl?

You can use beryl on a GeForce 2, so you definitely have the power for it. You'll have to make sure you're using XGL and not AIGLX. FireWing1 on FedoraForums has a howto for Beryl/Compiz on XGL/AIGLX.

You can use the 9550 if and only if you are using the open-source Radeon drivers. i.e. NOT LIVNA. You need to go back to the radeon driver that you got while installing Fedora Core 6. For most parts of Beryl it should work out -- the water effect and a few others may likely lag.

so the fglrx driver isn't as good as the open source radeon driver?

The fglrx driver won't even work with Beryl unless you use XGl. fglrx doesn't support AIGLX.

what about for gaming, i play counterstrike using wine and a couple other games, what would work better with that.
I just want to be able to get the most out of my card using fedora.

fglrx is noticeably faster in gaming performance over the open-source drivers.
