http://heroesofnewerth.com (http://heroesofnewerth.com/) -- a linux client is coming as reported on Slashdot Game News (http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/07/08/1543203/New-RTS-Based-on-DotA-Offers-Native-Linux-Client)
The article is light on details but I quite enjoy Demigod (a game in the same vein) yet I would much rather play it on linux. Hope this will satisfy my Demigod fix ... must click click click.

I am also looking forward to that game. Just a few days ago if found out, that the dota team is doing a game their self, i was quite unhappy that they dont seem to be interested in a linux port (while mac users might be lucky).
BUT now i am happy xD always loved dota (and wc3 in general)
checking the whole net to get a beta key xD... lets see ^^

They've mentioned on their facebook page that once they get 10,000 fans they'll open up the beta testing to everyone that is a fan of HoN.
http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/heroesofnewerth?ref=nf
Discussions about HoN are also allowed now but no media.
Finally I have a couple of invites if anyones interested, pm me with an email addr. that I can use to send out the invite to.

Edit: All my invites are gone. Have fun with the beta!
P.S.:
All HoN testers free to talk about HoN
All participants in the HoN beta test now have express permission from S2 Games to communicate and discuss Heroes of Newerth publicly. This includes forum discussions and talking to friends and family. Our embargo on media relating to HoN (videos, screenshots) is still in full effect and we'd kindly ask our testers not to disclose any game related media to those not actively in the Heroes of Newerh Beta.

So it is quite a nice game, and runs without a hitch on Linux already. However for me personally it is maybe a but too close to DOTA (even graphically). And it is really annoying that you currently have to wait for 10 players to join a server.

@Julius: You still got Keys? I'd really like to try this, since I used to play Dota quite a lot.
@topic: Looks almost like they took Dota 1:1 and added fancier graphics. But I've already read on some other sites that there are presumably more maps than just the classical Dota one, so I'm looking very much forward to this game. :)

Linux Games have a number of beta keys to give away for HoN.
I'm in beta, too. The NDA has lifted a bit, you are allowed to talk but can't post screenshots or videos.
The game is awesome, especially if you love DotA, you will love Heroes of Newerth :) The Linux port is great, it has 64-bit support, multicore support, RandR support and a lot more. The graphics are fantastic, definitly one of the best looking games for Linux. :)

Well they have their 10,000 fans on Facebook and will be sending out the invites in about 12 hours time. They stated that if you become a fan before the invites get sent out, you will still get an invite. :)

Learned from this game from here.
The game is amazing. Runs like a charm here (64Bit, ATI HD4850).
The graphics are amazing, the spell effects are indeed one of the best I've seen recently.
Lots of my friends are trying to get beta keys too.
Go Go S2!
I have been in the beta test for a couple of days now and I can assure you it is really amazing. I haven't played much DotA and just a few matches in Demigod, but HoN is more fun! Even in beta!
btw. I give away two invites to the first members pm-ing me. ;)

I've been playing this pretty much since Julius invited me (thanks again!) and also invited some friends in. I didn't play DotA much but enough to realize that this game is in many aspects very much identical. That's not a bad thing though, it's a great game. ;)
But I guess it'll be very hard to get into for someone who never played DotA.

This game is awesome, and runs very good with fglrx. Its really funny, but hard when I haven't played DOTA before.

I don't understand why would they release the game on GNU/Linux so long before doing so in Windows. I think it would be best it was released both at the same time; it would reach more people regardless of the O.S.
Unless, of course, they will use us as test lab bunnies.
Well, guess what, I'm all for it: gimme my key, pliz!!!
On the dl page you can select Linux,Mac+Win.

What is the actual game?
I was never a big WC3 fan so am completely unaware of DOTA.
Everything I've read/seen has just made me more confused. I currently think it's maybe some sort of team based strategy (each controlling a single unit?) with elements of tower defence?
Or does the NDA state that you can't even describe the game style?
cjr2k3

NDA says you can't release game related media (screenies, videos, etc) but the playstyle is like what you just described. Each one with an hero and tower defence kinda mechanism.
Just google for DotA video and you'le see.

Thanks, but I'm still puzzled yet a little intrigued.
It's not fair on a game to use a beta as a demo, so I won't request access - unless there is a tutorial section that could use some exposure to a genuine clueless noob?
A friend with invite via mail tried to register but the entered mail adress was rejected, don't get what was wrong. Anybody else with that problem?
Hello, i am request beta key too.
I have linux FC10 x86_64 (AMD X4) GPU: Nvidia

I've been playing this lately, it's a pretty fun game. I've never played DOTA so there was quite a learning curve but I must say the client runs great on Linux, Windows and my Mac!

I've been playing with a beta key for a few hours, runs quite well on Linux here. Promising, I'll probably end up buying this game. Although I'm quite a noob when it comes to games like this (never played dota).
