Official thread for Cedega 6.0 Discussion

- Cedega 6.0 Spearfish will be released on April 11, 2007.

While id Software and Epic Games are among the few major companies that are Linux gaming patrons, if you've been wanting to
play such games as Battlefield 2142 or Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, you will now be able to do so starting April 14! Next week Transgaming will be introducing Cedega 6.0. Among the features are increased performance, usability improvements, and a horde of new games support. Phoronix was fortunate enough to receive an advanced media release copy of Cedega 6.0 and today we will be just hitting the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all of the changes that make up this release.

"We are in the process of working on a Cedega 6.0 gaming performance article..." Will you include a comparison of the latest WINE vs Cedega 6 in the games you test?

11th or 14th?

Looks very interesting. I prefer Wine but it doesn't always work for me.

It will likely compare to WINE. It hasn't been decided at this point.

That is one of the things still being determined. The advanced copy of Cedega 6 only arrived last night.

Even though they didn't put an embargo date on any of our information, they have requested the preview be removed until the actual release :(. More information to come at that time.

The performance of Oblivion is very good but could use some work still. The game itself is indistinguishable from Windows and so far has only crashed on me one time. The sound is greatly improved in 6.0 as well and now allows other applications to use the sound system at the same time which is a nice change from being stuck with just Cedega sound or sound outside of Cedega. Hopefully with all of these improvements there will be new supported games in the coming months, C&C3 being the one I'd like to see.

Is there a chance you will be testing a range of ATi and nVidia cards? I would also like to see Cedega stack up with actual Linux native applications if possible, like Doom 3 Linux vs Doom 3 on Cedega etc. I think there are already preconceptions on what the result is, but I'm still curious to see how it turns out.

Also, 3dmarks benchmark would be interesting (XP vs Cedega).

Some things to that effect are being worked on and will be out towards the end of this month or early next month.

Excellent. Excellent. Here's another suggestion: A benchmark of different Cedega versions. Definitely an interesting set of results to behold.

That might be difficult unless Transgaming sends over some of the old binaries.

Hmm... Transgaming would have the old binaries... pity that it's impossible then.

I believe the performance comparison would be "interesting". Some of the games will be performing as good or better on Linux. Some of them will be slightly weaker, performance-wise. This isn't to do with Linux being weaker or Cedega being way better than ports (which it's not...)- it has to do with the skills of the porting team doing the work. Not everything is done efficiently when someone does the porting work (All I need do is point to the Shogo:MAD and SiN ports to make THAT point...).
