Phoronix: Come Play This New Linux-Native Game With Us!

S2 Games may not be as well known as id Software or Epic Games, but what distinguishes them from most of the other game companies is that they actually support Linux. With S2 Games' Savage 2, for example they provide a Linux-native game client...

hi

I would like a beta key for the game because I haven't played many games that have a native linux client.

Most of the games I play on linux I play with wine and there are many issues. The games becomes unplayable with different wine versions or with driver versions(I have an Ati video card).

So maybe this could be a start for native linux games

(I do not need a key, I am in the beta program)

The NDA allows you to talk about the game, but not to post media.

Heroes of Newerth is based on the concept of DotA, but enhances it, has nicer graphics, more community features and is standalone. In the closed beta, they focus on the game in general, on the engine and the ports to Linux and Mac, while more new content not found within DotA will be added until release.

If you want to know more about DotA, read THIS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DotA) article on Wikipedia. And again, it is only based on that concept, so ignore the screenshots from that article. The game looks *much* better.

Always been a fan of S2 games, and Warcraft and DotA (although on wine) and it's nice to see they still choose to support out platform.

Would be most delighted to try it out if you could send an invite.

I want to try this new game. Please, give me a beta key.

I'd love to test the game too, playing DotA on wine kinda sucks, especially with Debian's new move with 32-bit libraries combined with NVIDIA proprietary drivers on 64-bit. And I enjoyed both Savage 1 and 2 a lot.

Nice to see more games finally coming to GNU/Linux. I'm currently playing through the Penubra games I got at the sale and besides that I enjoy Sacred ported by LGP. Unigine also looks promising, and what about the Source engine (okay might not happen).

Hopefully this will continue. I'd also be delighted to try this out if there are any beta keys left.

Currently playing warzone 2100 and Starcraft (through wine). Warzone, btw, just had a new release and they now have the orginal videos for it.

I was also just wondering when the next release of an RTS game would be for Linux. Can it be now for me?

It would be a pleasure for me to test (please read: to play) this new GNU/Linux Game and i would be happy to receive a beta key. I sadly remember the old times when gaming was impossibile for linux users.

Now things are much better and the news of a new upcoming linux game is a further step in the right direction! Hoping more will follow

I'd like a beta key. I do all my gaming on Linux now and find that wine works well for most games I play, but I'm always looking out for native games. So far I play natively: UT2004, Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, and Savage 2. Other than that, WoW, Diablo 2, Starcraft, Warcraft 3, Tribes 2, emulators, and Steam games all work great in wine, but I prefer native games because i get much better framerates and performance. I run 64-bit Ubuntu and am always looking out for things that run in native 64-bit. S2 does a great job about this, and I'd really like to test 64-bit compatibility.

I am very excited to hear that S2 is this eager to support its Linux user base. I own Savage and Savage 2 and they are both great games. I have played DotA on WC3 a long time ago and it is a GREAT game for LAN play. I would appreciate it if you would please give me a key. I will also be informing some of my other buddies who are gamers of this beta program.

I run 64 bit Ubuntu, and would absolutely love to test out this native game. I really don't play any commercial games nowadays, one of the mains reasons is lack of support of course.

Cheers for S2 Games!

I wouldn't mind obtaining a beta key. Though if I get it, I'll be playing on an xps 1330 laptop, so it might not be able to handle it (for too long). Playing Hedgewars results in massive slowdowns after a while, due to overheating (thanks Nvidia!), although my recently purchased Penumbra collection seems to be handled fine.

That being said, I haven't played DoTA, but I still remember playing that Warcraft III scenario (on wine, so it wasn't all that pleasant), where you command a bunch of heroes through an entire campaign, without having to build bases and such. That was pretty fun.

edit: I wonder if you would actually get close to 400 replies on this article.

I love native Linux games. I have Doom 3, Prey, UT2004 and Enemy Territory. I hate messing with wine and trying to get something to run on system that is not designed to be run on that system.

I have tried a demo of S2 Savage 2 and it looked like a great game, I just didn't feel like getting into a long RPG game.

I love strategy games and I've never played one in Linux before so I'm excited to see the native Linux strategy game.

I would love to receive a key for the beta for this game.

Thanks.

Please yes. I love RTS games and my best option at the moment is to play Starcraft or Warcraft 3 in wine. A quality Linux native RTS would be incredible.

key please :)

Honestly I'm not sure were, when and how linux gaming will be taken seriously. It's great to see companies like S2, id and others making great titles for linux but they are really a minority... It's hard and costly for the companies to target wide hardware range and at the same time different OS's. According to recent numbers only recently desktop linux usage reached 1% of the total market share... I hope this cenario changes quickly because I'm tired of dual-boot just because of gamming :P

One thing that really needs to appear are flexible, easy and powerfull frameworks to leaverage the work of dealing with portability. I know that there are great frameworks like OGRE and CS but I know from experience that they are no DX SDK by far.

Even little things like SMP are hardly perfect... Recently I worked with OpenMP and I must tell you that it's really hard to achieve the same efficiency when comparing to native hardcoded solutions...

Let's see how things evolve and maybe the current paradigm begins to change for better for the *nix world :D

Would love a beta key! The less I have to rely on my dual-boot, the better. Not to mention, something based off DoTA = YAY! :)

I'm not much of a RTS fan (having played the first C&C and Warcraft games, but not much more) but I'll do anything to help along Linux-based gaming. (That even means buying Linux games that I either already owned for Windows or that I wasn't going to play much anyway)

Luckily the future for graphics drivers seems bright, now if they would only do something about sound which most of the time seemd the most troublesome thing to get working with games!

So please, sign me up for a key :)

It's definitely nice to see some companies supporting Linux, perhaps some day this OS will really get some attention ;)
I used to play DotA (under Wine) on Battle.net regularly some months ago (it's such a fun game once you get the grip and don't get powned all the time anymore), and I'd really love to get this experience natively on my Linux box. (that is, one more beta key for me please :D )

I am also interested in a key. I've been playing Savage2 for some time on my computer, and so I'm excited to try the new game by the company.

I wonder how it will perform on my Intel card (yes, the one with terrible performance)... Luckily I also have a Linux computer with an NVIDIA card, which so far has been good at handling any games I threw at it! (binary driver, of course)

I think the Linux users market-share is grossly underestimated, especially because of all the people dual-booting. I for one have several computers in the house, all of them with Linux and a few with Windows as well, how could that be correctly represented in on-line statistics?... Anyway, ever since Koules I've been looking for nice, playable and entertaining native games, and I'd love to give this one a try!

So I'll have me one of those keys, please!

It's interesting to see more and more 'real' games coming to the Linux platform. Most games on FLOSS platforms usually consist of those cheesey (yet sometimes oh so fun) puzzle and arcade games. Anyone else find Netwalk to be 150% addictive?

Oh, dota type of game for Linux? I love it!

As Phoronix has reported, it does not exist an alternative for directx under Linux, making it harder for developers to create games under Linux. I hope this change. One thing is to start like this and then let developers of games create this alternative for directx. Maybe, maybe not..

Anyway, give me a key! :)

I was pretty excited back when UT2k4 was on the shelves. I'd just got a new system and was running 64bit Linux. I was really excited that not only did UT2k4 come with a Linux installer on the disk, it also worked on 64bit. I've been quite disappointed since then, particularly with UT3. I'd love to see another title available for Linux, and am itching to give this game a test drive.

I really enjoy playing DotA, but I don't like rebooting constantly. I think any native Linux game with decent quality is a great thing, because each one brings Linux more ammunition in what I believe to be the strongest Windows-held desktop computer use sector (gamers).

To that end, I have been developing the cross-platform FOSS game Leges Motus (http://legesmotus.cs.brown.edu), and I play Urban Terror and Savage 2 on Linux.

I would certainly enjoy having a beta key for this game - S2 does some good stuff, and I want to support their efforts.

I'd love to try out a new game, especially since it has a native client! I like Wine and all, but I'm much happier to see companies finally doing the right thing.

This is the first I've heard of this game, but if it is decent I'd be willing to shell out a little cash when it goes gold. In the mean time, hopefully I can help make sure it goes gold without any bugs...

It's great they have a client for Linux. I play Savage 2 a lot, it's a fun game, one of the best Linux games a long side with the Penumbra series, Quake and Unreal Tournament.

But in all seriousness, I dual boot Ubuntu and Windows and having to reboot just to play the odd game when fancy strikes is a real PITA. Having a nice new shiny game to keep me on the Ubuntu side would be nice :)
