Phoronix: Okay, Linux Gamers Are REALLY Excited!

It seems as if Linux gamers are indeed really excited for having new games on Linux, well, "really excited" may still be an understatement. About 24 hours ago we talked about Heroes of Newerth, a game being developed by S2 Games, was coming to Linux and we were able to hand out beta invitations to begin playing the game immediately as part of their closed testing process...

Are you picking the people who get the keys randomly? I don't wont to be "that" guy but my post was #33 on the thread and I haven't got any PM yet. I'm getting worried... :S But if it's done randomly i understand.

Thanks.

I guess Michael has just overseen your post or something. In case he still doesn't send you a key for whatever reasons, let me know your email address and I'll invite you.

The more interesting news about all of this is that Phoronix was late in getting the news and beta invites. Sites like slashdot and linuxgames gave out keys weeks ago to Linux users.

So it would seem that there are a lot more Linux users that are interested in games than even I could have anticipated.

Also, I have 6 beta invites left if anyone is interested just send me a personal message.

Michael

We have unlimited beta invites basically, everyone should be getting them. If you posted a message in the original thread and didn't get a key in your inbox, post another message as I likely just didn't see it or something. Make all beta requests in that thread.

Hey!
Thanks for all the care!
Got my key and played with the game. It worked without any special care on my arch linux AMD64bit (lib32 compatibility installed, tho' i'm not sure if it's needed?). I'm from europe, so got ugly ping times, but created a 'noobs' game with an eastern US server, put EU in the game name and played a 'no-lag' game quickly without problems! Looks decent and runs nicely on my 8800GTS all maxed out 1280x1024.

Before you get too excited like I did, note that the game requires
OpenGL 2.0 support. So the open source radeon drivers did not work for me :(.
Install was fine, but when I ran the game it crashed with an error with something about opengl 2.0 not found.

Hey, I'd love a beta key but seriously.. what the hell am I going to do with it? My mighty ATI card is only useful as a very bad air heater. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one in this situation.

This is true even for Windows users !

So nothing to do with Linux gaming excitement.

Super new maybe? I have an 4870x2, but I've had the same problems with my older x1950pro. I have mentioned and detailed the problems several times before so I won't repeat myself.

The game works very well on my computer (ATI HD4870 / fglrx 9.3 / xorg-server 1.5.3 on gentoo 2.6.25), BUT, is there somewhere I can read some games instructions ????

What is the goal of the game ?
How does it play ?

Thanks a lot for any help !

So it looks like there's no hand-holding for peeps who don't have a clue about the game in the beta. Oh well, I'll wait for the release and hopefully a demo.

I would raise the lack of directions as an issue in the beta if I were you.

Ya, the game does not hand hold newbies at all. They'll need to put in a practice mode like they did in Savage 2. If you want to practice, I'd just suggest you start a private online game and start it with just you in it. Or we could arrange a Phoronix reader's match

phoronix readers match would be cool, i played a little, but ultamately got annoyed with people whining at me for sucking. i do, but i was playing all "noobs only" matches and have never played a game of this kind before...

some sort of single player with bots would be a great idea - to let people get a grasp of the game first.

He's right, a beta without directions is bad. In a beta you have to tell people "what" they have to test. It's not just "play and look". At last any professional and worthwhile Beta test contains directions. After all it's for the developers to iron out problems not for players to play it first.

most of us believe beta means free early access. :D

Atm, the testing is mainly for the devs to stress test the server code.

If you are unsure about whats going on, jump on the HoN League channel (IIRC) they are pro's to this game type and are willing to help newcomers with guidance and matches.

Its too bad there isn't a tutorial in the game (yet hopefully), I could had used one, but I don't need it now. What doesn't help though is that 2 out of the 3 games I've played already have consisted of jerks that are neither newbie friendly in a noob only game, or are very understanding. But if you guys want to get a game together we could organize one in #phoronix on irc.freenode.net or plan one on a certain date and time.

I do have to agree with you here it looks like it can be a fun game once you start to get to a decent level with it but there is a huge amount of elitism. even on noob server you get kicked from games based on your stats. Have i missed something here? I have enjoyed playing the beta key but their community is so hostile, dont think i'll be buying this regadless of linux support

This is exactly the reason I refused to play DoTA... a game full of elitist jerks. :-(
That said though... since I can create what amounts to single player games bu starting a private game... or I can invite friends I know who are not expecting perfection, I will be playing this game. The graphics are nice.. and best of all, that ever elusive Linux native client. I'll be buying the game when it goes gold :-)

From what I saw, HoN is a very cool game, and it's even better since it's coming to Linux. However, I agree that there is too much elitism within the community. I myself am a newcomer to HoN (and Savage 2 for that matter) and I find that this attitude does deter me from playing the game as often as I play something along the lines of Guild Wars or WoW. For the time being I have been setting up private games and playing by myself, and it is pretty fun and reminds me of WarCraft III. The elitist community is no fault of the developers, but it can be a bit egregious at times.

The solution I've found... dig around and find a few players who are willing to help you learn or play at your (and my) beginner level. You can tag them as friends in the game server screen, and when they pop online, you can arrange bigger matches (bigger than solo games). So far.. no probs with those that think they are better than everyone else :-)

That might be true, but you also get the people like me, long time reader who don't post that much. I think I made 1 post before the 1 asking for a key, and that might very well been a month or two before...

900 people who will never post again is acceptable. But let's imagine people who come here by word of mouth and pose as *nix OS users -- which they might not be -- to get the beta key and then only to download the Windows version once in.

Edit. I hate to be a spammer, since I already asked for advice on this problem (http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18216), but I'll ask here too for help since I didn't get replies, and I'm craving to play HoN but I can't. Basically HoN doesn't manage to connect to the web, except for 2 places: (1) checking what is the latest game version and (2) checking how many running games there are. But nothing else so I can't play. I don't want to report this as a bug since I believe it's my Ubuntu Studio 8.04 problem somewhere, because I own World of Goo, which also refuses to connect to the internet to check other players' scores. All this while browsing works just fine. Any idea why? Thanks.

having them pose a linux users is not uncommon. You see this on Windows/OSX fights all the time. when the osx people provide valid points the windows people usually say they use linux, which the rest of the world knows is crap. This in particular i take with great compliment. Not to mention is shames the windows user base.

apparantly not :(

ok so explain the reason that i can not get one?

1. *edited* does s/he need a reason... like really?
2. You are saying you are wanting to try the game out, not beta test to reduce number of bugs by reporting them.
3. It looks like you are waning to it up at a public place while the agreement of betatesting it is (might have changed) that you are not allowed to even talk about the game or show it to people.

How come your employed and im not, especially when im the one who knows how to read.

Do you rly need an explanation? like serious? I dont mean to be rude but its not hard to miss. Its the big fat thread with almost 100 pages of posts.

i should apply to Howies, my resume would look something like:
