It's all here: http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20091111094923390
I _really_ can't believe that...
So what now? Will Ubuntu have to pay Microsoft for rights to use sudo?!?

I guess they'll have a hard time if they insist on Ubuntu and the likes paying them licensing-fees. Might make an interesting court-case though, since there's undeniable evidence that sudo has been around way longer than Microsofts patents. Maybe that'd finally make the law-makers realize what a pile of bullshit software-patents are.

Uh, no. This so-called "patent" is totally pointless and can't possibly in any way provide them with ANY benefit, and it CERTAINLY can't lead anyone to paying royalties for its use.

In fact, it is more than likely just another nail in MS's coffin (under construction), since crap like this will be cited in every MS anti-trust case that hits courts anywhere.
Basically, you should cross your fingers and HOPE that MS does something TRULY STUPID, like try to enforce this "patent".

Considering that a pile of bullshit has value, as does a pile of horseshit...makes things grow real nice...

They can patent it all they want, they won't get anything out of it because you can simply throw the 1980 version of sudo at them.

Its not just sudo that counts as "prior art". A whole bunch of stuff related to POLICY KIT actually matches the "pretty pictures" part of this "patent".

MS is just being a troll patenting stuff like sudo. I sure hope the USPTO shoots down the application

Microsoft likes to patent a bunch of things and use it as a scary closet full of monsters.
Then all they have to do is hope Free Software Foundatin doesn't hire Major Pain.

Software patents - an endless stupidity?

Nope, many hardware patents are every bit as stupid. An aussie was granted the patent for the wheel not too long ago.

The patent isn't really about sudo. See here. (http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/11/microsofts-psuedo-sudo-patent-doesnt-really-cover-sudo.ars)

And this is sad they allow such patents to be made.
