You should be able to just fine. If you're running an older Socket 939 motherboard, you may need to flash the BIOS though. Just make sure you upgrade it to a S939 chip for the motherboard, not AM2.

The ASUS A8AE-LE does indeed show support for Athlon 64 X2 processors.

To flash your BIOS you need to attain it from your motherboard manufacturer... You will then need to flash it using floppy disks or another method (some manufacturers offer programs to flash from Windows or by other means). Though you may not need to flash your bios for Athlon 64 X2 support, it largely depends when the motherboard was made.

i went to asus site and the mobo doesn't register with them. my bios is up to date as per hp. i have read on other chats about a 3.14 bios that fixes 3.13 errors with a 64x2 chip. where o' where can i find it?

You should be fine then as it looks like your current BIOS supports the Athlon 64 X2.

It isn't absolutely necessary, but could be a wise choice.

Great, glad to hear it's going well. Feel free to add those details to the Phoronix LCH @ http://www.phoronix.com/lch/

Did you upgrade the CPU fan?

I'm getting an AMD X2 4600+ Toledo OEM CPU and I don't know if I'll need to replace the fan. The OEM CPU doesn't come with an AMD fan like retail units do.

The stock sr1710nx fan is made by Asus.
