HOWTO: 3D Acceleration for ATI cards (works for SuSE, Mandriva and Debian)

There is a howto on installing the 8.28.8 ATI 3D-Drivers, titled:

On one of the other threads here, I saw that someone claimed his 9200 was clocking over 12,000/5 = 2,400 FPS for glxgears.

Is this correct. Here's what I get with my card:

8.28.8 ATI Drivers + 8.14.13 libGL.so.1.2 shared libraries

Radeon A9250 128 MB card from ASUS (RV280 5960).

# glxgears
6090 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1218.000 FPS
6784 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1356.800 FPS
6787 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1357.400 FPS
6788 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1357.600 FPS

# fgl_glxgears
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
870 frames in 5.0 seconds = 174.000 FPS
990 frames in 5.0 seconds = 198.000 FPS
962 frames in 5.0 seconds = 192.400 FPS
987 frames in 5.0 seconds = 197.400 FPS

What other components are you using in the system?

I'll run some glxgears next time I have any Radeon 9250 systems powered up. I know some others on the forums have reported higher results.

CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+
VIA KM400/KM400A chipset
AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xd0000000
ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO]
1024 MB DDR 333MHz

Sorry about the delay.

Have you tried the open-source drivers lately for your setup? How has its performance compared?

Have you tried the open-source drivers lately for your setup? How has its performance compared?
No,... but I got these results from the Nividia on-board GeForce 6150 (with Nividia's driver package NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8776-pkg2.run)

#glxgears
5182 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1036.400 FPS
5528 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1105.600 FPS
5530 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1106.000 FPS
5531 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1106.200 FPS

So it is about the same as the performance from the ATI Radeon 9250.

Actually, the games performance seems generally better than that of the ATI Radeon 9250 (but maybe that is because the machine is more recent).

Maybe I should make it clear to ATI and friends.

The reason I have moved to nVidia for my new computer (and now my brothers) is due to the sad state of the Linux ATI drivers.

There seems to be nothing wrong with ATI cards themselves. It was just the nightmare getting them to work with Linux that motivated the change.

I think they call it, "Voting with one's feet/money."

It seems that they did not like pictures of GW Bush praying at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, with a Jewish Skullcap on, and others of Bush celebrating Chanukah, and others with him cavorting with dozens of rabbis.

Not yet, as you can imagine I have a very busy schedule. You may be in the recent part of this thread -- http://phoronix.net/forums/showthread.php?t=256 as the performance DRI figures have been discussed there.

Don't worry arizona.indymedia.org has CENSORED these photos, but there are copies all over indymedia, for example:

http://chapelhill.indymedia.org/news/2007/01/54672.php or,
http://cleveland.indymedia.org/news/2007/01/24276.php or,
http://arizona.indymedia.org/news/2007/01/54672.php

It seems it is not antisemies, but JEWS who hate these pictures shown.

If Israel was somewhere in subsaharan Africa nobody would care about them, most of all GWB. It's because they are put to police the world's biggest oil fields that make them useful, via their location and their millennium-old hatred with the Arabs Let't say for a moment the Jews cease to exist, USA would find someone else to ally and pray with, eg. the Turks

Don't use too much petrochemicals and stop spamming a computer forum

You claim the Iraq war was about oil.

It was not, it was about Jews/Israel.

Iraq, has total reserves of about 112 billion barrels of OIL.

Conservatively, the Iraq war (when over) will cost some $2 trillion (over $360 billion has already been spent on the Iraq war (and over $500 billion for the complete "war of terror")).

Consequently, the US will have paid some $(2 trillion)/(112 billion) = $ 17.85 per barrel for each and every barrel of oil that is reported to exist in Iraq.

$17.85 per barrel for each and every barrel of oil that is reported to exist in Iraq.

But, the US probably won't get more than the proverbial drop of it.

Thats right, the US is headed toward economic disaster,... all for the economic benefits of oil,... if we are to believe what you say.

Interestingly, the price of oil in 1998 was $12.50 a barrel (before Bush pushed the price into the 70's with his war for Jews/Israel).

We could have bought all the oil for less than the cost of the war.

And the mad Jews want to repeat the process with Iran (and push the oil price to what,... $200 a barrel?).

Thanks for stepping in on this Michael. @Jade: This forum isn't a place for you to post these pictures... it has no relevance in any way to anything else going on here. I think the pictures are interesting, but all you'll do in posting stuff like this is alienate and anger community members. At the most you could have just posted a link to the pictures to give the story behind the original links closure.

I don't come to this forum for this.

Michael: is it OK to talk about such subjects in the "General Discussion" section?

Michael

You can talk about whatever in general discussion as long as it doesn't take offense to one's religion or beliefs and no one is offended by it.

Although this is my first post here, I must admit that I find it disgusting to see such an outburst of antisemitism without any contradiction in a public forum. I have been lurking around this forum now and then and value it for the technical stuff and especially for the bits of seemingly qualified information dropped by michael. However, this thread really has put me in a bad temper. The combination of antisemitic chatter together with a howto as oh-so-very-clever "bait" is disgusting and it is a pity that all readers so far have not commented on it.

I don't care about the pictures (which may be created in photoshop (at least some of them most likely are) or real), the really relevant stuff is the obvious antisemitism which is meant to be transported by those pictures and which has been stated clearly by the author of this thread. Racial discrimination of any sort is in my option one of the most base and disgusting traits of human nature and should be at least contradicted by any responsible individual. Consider this my contribution to that.

Again, I want to apologize for the addition of a comment which is most likely against the forum rules to an already superfluous thread; however, I really feel the urge to express my feelings (which are hopefully shared by others) about that sort of posting.

DirtyHairy,

I and many other forum readers have already expressed much disagreement towards Jade's off-topic postings. Unless the thread was already removed, you can see it in the other thread where I personally warned Jade and that any further action (since then he has asked about action in general discussion, but has yet to act upon it) would not be tolerated and would result in his immediate removal from the forums.

I hadn't removed the pictures as this was his first outbreak and it was on the borderline of being removed, however, as he has continued to fuel such crap in the forums these pictures will now be removed.

EDIT: Here is the other thread where he was warned: http://phoronix.net/forums/showthread.php?t=945

I hope you stick around the forums.

The links in the top top article no longer work.

These ones should do:

http://linux.50webs.org/ati/ati.htm

Is the content still applicable/correct?

Is the content still applicable/correct? Give me a break... you keep posting links back to your website that have tons of anti-semetic pictures, comments, and articles. I especially love the one page where you say "Many of the above, actively conceal the fact that they are Jews" under a long list of pictures of various world leaders giving photo-ops with Jewish religious groups. You are trying to use technical discussions on this forum to post links back to your website in the hopes that you sway some opinions and gather support for overturning the Hans Reiser trial, because you believe it is some vast Jewish conspiracy or something. I still really haven't figured out what exactly you think is going on, and I've wasted some valuable time reading some of the crap you've posted on this forum.

I wasn't going to post anything as straight-forward as this in the interest of keeping the topic somewhat on track to a technical discussion, but then you go and dig up a thread from a year ago which until now ended in you getting told to keep you anti-semetic posts out of this forum. Constantly linking back to your website which still has all of the same crap you got in trouble for in the first place is a dumb idea.
