After several delays, AMD plans to launch its long-awaited R600 graphics processors. AMD is currently briefing select members of the press on its R600 architecture in the Tunisia, but there is no embargo date on the R600 for DailyTech -- we can show you benchmarks now.

AMD plans to launch a completely new DirectX 10 lineup with the flagship ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX. Other models such as the Radeon HD 2900 XT, Radeon HD 2600-series and Radeon HD 2400-series will also join AMD’s DirectX 10 family after the initial high-end launches.

... but on Linux you can likely look for it performing about the speed of a NVIDIA GeForce 7800GTX.

Looks good :) Can't wait for some 2900XTX 1GB DDR4 benchmarks.

... and to see how well it fares in popular linux benchmarks,
compared to a Geforce6800 :D

Saturday look for an interesting article on ATI's performance versus NVIDIAs.

Heh... I already KNOW what it's going to be like... :D

Lower than a 6800? Is this why amd keeps delaying the cards?

They are not delaying the cards for Linux reasons.

Linux drivers might suck, true, but the thing's gonna kick ass, as far as I can see. The 2900XT is holding its own against the 8800s, and the XTX is quite a jump again.

Actually, after Michael's response, I'm beginning to suspect that with
the new beta drivers the r600 will be kicking the 8800's butt in linux
too :D

Guess again.

One can dream :D

EDIT: okay I just saw the 2900xtx benchmarks over at
dailytech; seems ati has still a lot of work to do at
the driver front

Pretty nice card!! I'm interested to see Linux benchmarks for this card running wine. Should be interesting.

Just adding to the rumor mill..... :p

From what we’ve been hearing in Taipei though, ATI are working busier than ever on new driver revisions which MIGHT increase performance but of course nobody knows what will happen for sure. One company claimed that ATI are waiting for “the best driver” which means if the driver is still not 100% by May 14th, we could see further delays.

The news sounds like "new performance driver coming soon, but I can't tell you" :P I can't wait!

Im not convinced those benchmarks were done with the latest revision of the card or that they are even real. The driver could also be the problem. Particularly the XTX one as it should at least have a somewhat better performance than the XT no matter what.

i'm taking all those "working busier on new drivers" stories with a jar of salt. unless they mean windows, b/c that's what ati cares the most about.

unless they mean windows GAMES, b/c that's what ati cares the most about.

fixed that for you :D

In my experience, the windows catalysts' performance has decreased
for anything that is not a game. I still use the 4.12 since they're
still the fastest ones for the scene.org demos for example.

I really hope AMD/ATI can get a good driver for R600. Having to relay only on nVidia (as benevolent dictators as they are), cannot be good in the long run.
