Since we can't really predict what we're gonna call each release, heres a pool of them I made up that can be used for any future release. Some are lame, some are decent, i'm just going with the flow.
1: Fool you once, shame on us, fool you twice, and we'll fool you again. No AIGLX.
2: Whats AIGLX? Don't you mean FGLRX?
3: We make up our bug fixes, they aren't actually real.
4: Dell wants us to support a thing called Linux, we do but we don't really know what it is.
5: ATI Linux Catalysts: We were drunk this month edition.
6: ATI Linux Catalysts: Still getting over the hangover edition.
7: New feature: Linux didn't have a blue screen of death, now it does.
8: We make Richard Simmons look straight edition.
9: Welcome AIGLX, and a thousand bugs for FGLRX.
10: Removal of ATI Brand name, it actually means Annoying Tech Ignorance. We are now just AMD.
I'll make more soon, maybe toss in some positive ones we can use, not just negatives hehe.

I think next month's driver will be full of changes. Maybe something like:
8.41.-2 "Who needs R300 support anyway?"
Then the following driver will bring us the long expected new feature they have been working on for the last couple of months:
8.42.0 "Themable Control Center"
I am very happy that the X.org drivers work for my card!
Greetings

You guys sure have no faith in the new Linux driver or AMD's other announcement...
Unfortunately for AMD, they bought a company that has consistently let us down.
First it was closing up everything when they were one of the first to GIVE us technical information to make a driver possible. The RAGE Pro and RAGE 128 were some of the first and best supported 3D cards in the early days. I know, I helped part of that happen.
Then it was drivers for the FireGL cards that sort of worked, weren't official, and sort of drove the other cards- when NVidia was providing largely working drivers.
Then it was "official" drivers that they really don't support all that much. For all the statements that they support Linux, not to denigrate the work they HAVE done for us, they do a less than half-hearted job at it. This isn't due to the people doing the work- they're largely top-notch. This is due to a group of upper management that think Linux is just a lark during earlier periods. Worse, the driver is mostly useless for people that have things like Hypermemory, they have to have boards that are in UMA mode or have totally dedicated memory- or you can forget running at all.
What you are seeing Michael, is the rage and frustration, being vented, from all of this and more. It's not that we don't believe that something's coming- it's that we've been told this repeatedly by the ATI people in the past. And, until they honestly deliver something other than just empty promises, I don't think we're going to take them much more seriously than they took us in the past.

Like in WW1, "The war will be over by christmas!"...4 years later. The fglrx drivers are in much the same condition "We'll support R600/AIGLX by christmas!"...4 years later.

I stick by my pet name for this one- I didn't think they could get it straightened out enough to have even a rough-cut available by now. Trust me on that one.
I stand by my notebook purchase up to this point- and will remain skeptical for a long while at least; they disappointed us for so long as it was. Their silicon had the potential for this all along. They failed at that task and let most of us down as a result for the longest time. I had to buy a notebook with an NVidia GPU just to be able to do my 3D contract development work. They now have my attention; how long they have it, remains to be seen.

8.42 - Motion Sickness Edition
We today at ATI/AMD have decided to release the 8.42 driver which supports Compiz Fusion. There are however, some unexpected issues with our binary drivers and Compiz. Do not spend too much time with Compiz if you are vulnerable to motion sickness.
Our drivers will make you sick for hours. Its like riding a marry-go-round spinning at 100 mph for 20 minutes. We are working very hard to correct the issue, the fix should be introduced in 8.43.
Sorry for the inconvenience, oh wait, we use that alot don't we?
I guess we're just sorry.
P.S. If you install 8.42 irregardless, make sure you supply yourself with a empty bucket.

Here's a reality check for you:
For the LARGE part, there is little advantage in the near to medium term to buying an 8800GTS over a 7900GTX card.
Why? Because you're not going to find a game operating under Linux in the next 3-6 months that will utilize the DX10 ARB extensions that the 8800 supplies in it's hardware.
Not under WINE. Not native.
If you're future proofing your rig, then yeah, it might not be a bad thing to consider it. It's my understanding that they're getting the Linux problems with the 8800 cards well under control in the near future. The same cannot be said of AMD's current set of woes right at this time. Perhaps in another couple of months, maybe it'll be a different story, but...
Now that I've said my peace here, let's get back to the bashing of AMD's late, unstable driver... >:-) :D

Oh, they care, alright- they have to.
Linux is the OS of cluster computing. If they don't have working drivers, you can't use their GPUs for cluster compute boost. Moreover, making THIS crowd happy is important for that same business segment- we're the ones that reccomend the hardware of that nature and the hardware everyone else buys.
If we're not happy, then we don't reccomend their stuff in the future. If we don't reccomend, they will see lower or much lower sales.
Now, you say, why in the Hell are we seeing the treatment we're seeing?
Because AMD didn't know the extent of the mess ATI had made for itself and therefore for AMD- ATI butchered all but the DirectX group and the silicon design groups- either through layoffs or attrition with no replacement of the people leaving. AMD then followed this by a RIF globally because the acquisition of ATI and a few other things gave them financial indigestion and they had to appease the day traders so their stock price would stop dropping. This further reduced their manpower.
What you're seeing is the result of a prior upper management group betting on Vista followed up by an unknowing upper management not realizing that they've got some serious problems in one of their main business segments.
While I'm going to still poke fun at them over this debacle, I'm still willing to consider them as a viable possibility- they're seriously interacting with us at this time and they're seriously trying to fix the problems, even if the closed driver is still a big fat mess right at the moment.

I think pretty much ATI is being fucked here, we (as linux users) have put grip on them; and the market too, so some time-handling problems again because of us.
We are making them to deliver us good stuff in minimum time, but they are acting with too much haste. Take a look at nVidia, got nearly more market than ATI, has a stable "binary, proprietary" driver and time 2 time changing one byte of code, releasing as a major release, sitting calm on a sofa, and not giving a bit of their GPU specification 2 us, and most of us think they're doing better that ATI!
But it IS the opposite, there is much progress in ATI, but since this progress is with too much haste, their work is all fucked up.
Most of us are willing to get binary drivers every 4 months instead of 1 month, but have it with major progresses and no bugs. This is better, both for us, and for ATI, since they can do their whatever works, with less haste and more accuracy -> which leads to our happiness, and to their more successive future.
But I said major progress, not changing release number and say: "Hey everybody: We changed our release number system and we have released a driver with one buggy thing fixed up and having more buggy parts involved"
This could be the way they should have acted till now, but Since they have released some of their specifications, the only thing which can please us to appreciate them, is only releasing all the specification ASAP...
I hope someone from ATI would read these stuff i wrote here

i'd rather have ati devs follow more opensource-like model in their development (ground-up like work). fglrx/catalyst is totally ridden with bugs.
i'd rather see ati release a basic but _stable_ 2d-only driver, and slowly expand it, month by month. but keeping it stable (and compatible with new x.org/kernel) in the first place. but that's not the way proprietary development is done - customers are just less forgiving in this case :]
i really don't believe we'll ever see a stable and relatively bug-free fglrx/catalyst-or-whatever-the-new-name-is driver the way the development is being done now. it just seems like there is way too much bugs to fix everywhere in the driver. that's why i gave up on the driver - i just can't see it getting stable. ever.
i'd rather use less functional but more stable opensource solution.

Bingo... but we're doing *that* with the open source driver efforts. The opne source driver can be kept compatible with new x/kernel development, partly because it will be smaller and simpler, and partly because it will be open source so problems can be investigated quickly and easily.

does it mean you're planning to make new fglrx/catalyst driver on top of radeonhd codebase, when it matures? (not sure if the license allows that).

The idea is to offer a choice of drivers -- a simple, stable open source driver which can be easily tweaked to work on the newest x & kernel releases (and which can serve as a development vehicle for them), plus a more feature-rich, performance-optimized proprietary driver which will be tested and supported on specific distros.
We probably need another Phoronix article to make the whole story clear.

maybe you do. it would be nice to say up front which distributions are going to have official support.

SuSE and Red Hat are their "officially supported" distributions, all other support and testing comes via the community.

So we will have the choice between one driver that does not fully work, because it's missing the advanced stuff (likely because of unreleased specifications), and another one that does not fully work, because it does not support the latest distros/new kernels/xorg etc.? Sounds awesome.
Well then they should add at least one distribution with Xserver 1.4.x to the supported list to get rid of the errors soon. When nobody tests xserver 1.4 then this will not happen...
