Being a user of an R200 ATI chip, I'm really looking forward to this.
It'll be a part of the upcoming Suse 10.2 which is my current chosen distro.
I'd like to see the x.org crew completely modularize the driver module(s) so that they could be installed with relative ease as they are released. As opposed to waiting for xorg releases for an update.

I will not say whom or which manufacturer, but I will report that one engineer had voiced thoughts to me in the past about wanting improved driver modules or some fashion so that if they had open-source drivers they wouldn't have to keep telling their customers to use X11 git for driver updates.

It's not X11R72, but a third and final release candidate is out. The final release for X.Org 7.2 will now be December 11: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2006-December/020266.html

I know it might be kind of off topic as this is specifically about 7.2, but.....

----------------X.org's Keith Packard turned up for several of the X.org discussions, and he indicated that X.org will be solving some of these problems upstream in the 7.3 timeframe. According to Packard, X.org 7.3 shouldn't even require an xorg.conf -- everything should be autodetected at run time. X.org will receive information about new devices dynamically from D-Bus. X.org will also be moving to fontconfig to make fonts more dynamic.-----------
Dynamic x.org. Now *thats* modern.

Hmmm, I wonder what happened to keep the final release from coming?
