You remember The Truth About ATI/AMD & Linux (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=735&num=1) with Matthew Tippett's references to trains? Well, here is his representation of the pre-8.41 train engine and the new 8.41 train engine :D

That's... funny. Hilarious, in fact. :D

Way to hotlink images, though.

Really nice analogy, but the image I have of things is a little different...

You really have to look sharp to see the difference! :D

There is a 500 Premium series. Already discussed it :)

A "more improved" train could be called "airplane" or "rocket". So improvement is possible. ;)

EDIT:
Okay, as step before we could just switch to a plain "transrapid":
Top speed (first attained) of scheduled trains (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_speed_record_for_railed_vehicles#Top_speed__. 28first_attained.29)

That train was developed for "normal speeds" of 500 to 550km/h.

So there is quite some place for improvements over the Shinkansen...

you know...faster trains have more spectacular derailings and crashes. is that what's waiting for us?

so the comparison is a bit wrong, in that aspect :]
