The Intro:
Hello all, I am new to Linux. Well after all the days and hours I've spent trying to get it to work, I may actually be a little bit more knowledgeable than the average newb.
After seeing a few videos on youtube.com about linux, I was wowed and decided I wanted to give it a try. My experience thus far has been a rough one, yet, I'm still intrigued.........
The Machine:
Saphire HD2600XT/256 DDR4 RAM
AMD X2 5600+ 2.8 Ghz
ASUS M2N-E Motherboard/SocetAM2/BIOS revision 0802
2 GB of Mushkin Enhanced RAM/800 Mhz/5-4-4-10
80 GB SATA Hard Drive
The Battle:
It was a dark and cloudy night. Silence settles on the battlefield as the components assume their rightful positions. The faint sounds of victory chants can be heard afar. Anxiety lurks within the man. "Captain I'm scared!", yells the video card before being deployed.
Actually it wasn't like that, but I was pretty excited to get Linux working.
I got Opensuse 10.2 installed correctly. I installed all the necessary packages before video driver installation. To list a few:
kernel-source
Mesa-devel
zlib-devel
I performed all the pre-installation procedures according to a document I cross referenced.
make mrproper
make cloneconfig
make modules_prepare
make clean
Then I installed the driver package, installed the driver. The one thing I wasn't sure of was "XFree86" referenced on ATI's release notes. Typed in aticonfig --initial. Then restarted.
The Aftermath:
I didn't expect this to work. But miraculously it did. The images were sharp, and things looked great. Well at least until I opened and dragged a window.
The Problem:
When I drag an open window, I see a lot of choppiness. It is very noticeable. I can't enable 3D Acceleration. I'm assuming the driver is not designed for that to work anyway. The reason for this thread is to find out if any one else is using the HD2600 series card, or even HD2000 series cards, and is actually experiencing the great performance that was promised by this driver. Please leave a reply. Thank you for reading, and thanks for your reply in advance.

Hi,
Welcome to the forums.
How did you install the fglrx 8.41.7 driver itself? Did you download it from ATI and run --buildpkg OpenSuSE/102 (or whatever the syntax is) and then install the resulting files?

Thank you for the replying. I installed the buildpackage using the driver file I downloaded from ATI/AMD.
"Generate Distributin Specific Driver Package"
Then using the same file I download from ATI/AMD. I installed the driver.
"Install Driver 8.41.7 on X.Org 7.1 and later releases 64-bit"
I didn't use any other file. Is that my problem?

So you used the GUI installer by just double clicking the file? That isn't correct.

Follow the manual driver installation.

Thanks for the help. I will try this and see what happens. If this works, God bless you. If not...hmm...God bless you anyway. I will post my results when I'm done. I installed Opensuse 10.3, so I'm reinstalling 10.2 now to try. Thanks again.

If it doesn't work out, just post again with specifically what you are doing or what appears in your error log (cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE) etc...

rpm -ivh fgl*.rpm --force
to just overwrite them with the new ones instead of uninstalling first?

No I didn't. I used the command "rpm -Uvh fgl*.rpm" first. I will remove and re-install. If I get the same messages I will let you know.

For what it's worth. I logged back into Opensuse 10.3. I have the 8.41.7 driver installed. I was experiencing choppiness with my HD2600XT. I shutdown my computer put in my x800xl, logged into Opensuse 10.3, and it was smooth as a baby's behind with the 8.41.7 driver installed.
My HD2600XT works perfectly in XP and Vista though, so don't think it could be the card.
hi
i have a laptop with a HD2600, using the 8.41.7 driver on ubuntu gutsy and i'm experiencing the same choppiness when moving or resizing windows :(
any info from my system i can give to help resolve this annoying problem? :)

Not to my knowledge. It just sucks that this driver was designed specifically for the HD2000 series, yet it works better with my X800XL. Hopefully this will be fixed next release because I'm excited to use Opensuse 10.3 it looks really good so far, and a working video driver would allow me to put my Windows days behind me.

Hi! I actually just got an HD2600XT and got 3D to work. I used that HOWTO to do so. http://en.opensuse.org/ATI_Driver_HOWTO
Make sure you follow the hard way. Print it out before because you'll have to go in init #3 mode (text based). Make sure libdrm is version 2.3, make sure you prepare the kernel following the steps. And it may not hurt to install Xorg 7.2. I did it and it works. 3D is enabled and no choppiness when draggin the windows.
Hope this helps!!
h.
hmmm, could you post your xorg.conf please?
(there's no other config file relative to fglrx, is there..?)
are all the others using ati 2k series exeriencing this crappy 2d performance?

I hope you got it fixed... otherwise try this!
You just have to run sax2 as root... best(or easyist) way is to: open a terminal and enter "su" then root password ... type "init 3" to enter terminalmode, run "sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx" ... after that runt "init 5" and i should be ok!... (i hope!).

for what i've learned the board works flawless with gentoo 2.6.22 xorg7.2 xorg-server-1.3. i have tested it and works pretty well. there are only some minor issues with compiz, but that's normal.
the driver used is the 8.433. also the newest one should run well.
also for what i know opensuse has a direct ati repository in yast. try that one, or generate a package for the opensuse version.
after that add these options:
Section "Device"
BoardName "Radeon <identified by sax2>"

i'm sure that these options work with the board. if you happen to have problems use the packages that i've indicated:
fglrx 8.433 (catalyst 7.11)
xorg 7.2 (latest present in opensuse repos)
xorg-server 1.3 (latest present in opensuse repositories should do)
kernel 2.6.22 (use one kernel of your choice from the 2.6.22 ones)
libstdc++v3 (this is very important and without the driver should not work)
fontconfig (use at least 2.4.2)
freetype (use at least the 2.3 version)
when you generate the package for opensuse then you won't have to install the also the kernel sources.
after generating the rpm do a rpm -iuVh --force <package>.rpm && init 6 and digit startlevel 3 as an option for grub when starting.
once in level 3 login as root and start sax2 (after having modified the xorg.conf options) and see if sax2 starts its xvideo server. if so, then hit modify and you should see the 3d enabled. adjust the monitor if you haven't done it manually and test the configuration. it it works exit sax2, open /etc/X11/xorg.conf manually in your favourite text editor and see if the options were mantained. then do a init 5 and you should be able to use at its full your new board.

I really appreciate your response. I will give it a try, and hopefully all goes well. At least there's light at the end of the tunnel.
