Phoronix: Planned Features For X.Org 7.4, 7.5
Last month at the X Developer Summit in Cambridge, Eric Anholt, Adam Jackson, and Daniel Stone had talked about the future of X.Org releases for the next year. Over the weekend, Daniel Stone had updated the XDS 2007 Notes at X.org with the latest plans for X.Org 7.5.

So that would be server-side support for pbuffers, would it? If so, then that would be very welcome! My R200 graphics card supports GLX 1.4 on the client side, but since the server currently only supports GLX 1.2 then that is all that Wine allows itself to use.
How about just buying new hw when you need more features - your card is DX8 only...

How about just buying new hw when you need more features - your card is DX8 only...it would be better to have drivers that provide all features of what i already have. otherwise it's just a waste of money.

The R200 is still the best-supported graphics hardware with Free drivers. The radeonhd driver and r300_dri might just change that in time, but not yet...
Besides, my point is that with the Xorg server stuck at GLX 1.2, not even the GLX 1.4 features of my existing card are being used properly.
I guess you could get a cheap used R300 card more easy...

A Radeon 9550 and a Radeon 9800, but the r300_dri.so isn't yet as capable as the r200_dri.so so I'm sticking with my Radeon 9200 for now ;).
But you could use fglrx if needed too. r200 only works with fglrx until Xorg 7.1 (like Debian Etch). There are 3d apps that really require GLSL shaders and other things to work properly and these things are currently not working with the free drivers. Or just go for NV ;)

fglrx is simply not an option for R200 any more. And besides, fglrx also taints the kernel which is unacceptable on this machine.
That's the ideological approach to the problem, not the one which would give you a working result in short time. Really funny those ppl who restrict himself to get into GPL heaven ;)

No, actually it's "Thank you, to those who choose to work to advance the state of Free drivers rather than sit back and expect others to do it for them.". There's nothing remotely funny about that, and neither is there any such place as "GPL Heaven" :(.
Not everybody has 5 year old hardware and wants to keep it.

Is my understanding of multipointer support rational. I believe it is support for simultaneous users with keyboards and mice in one X environment. If so this really really cool. This would mean I could log into another person's computer and work with them. Or even better imagine having a big big screen with about 20 people working on different portions of it. That would be so amazingly cool.

It also means that I will be able to carry on working when my small nephew suddenly plugs a USB mouse into the PC. (Although I doubt he'll find it as funny... :D)

Throwing away perfectly good hardware simply because something else has appeared on the market is a waste, particularly if the old hardware still does the original job just fine.

I can see both sides of the argument here. I usually don't care for old hardware, but hey, if it works fine for you, great. There shouldn't be any reason for you to be forced to upgrade if something's working 100%.
At the same I recognize that technology keeps progressing, it keeps moving forward and sometimes people need to finally upgrade their hardware to be able to use new software, gain more performance, get additional/new features etc.
It's a tough call, but there's a reason why there are distro's out there specifically geared towards supporting older hardware. :)

personally i can't believe i will need a faster and better pc anytime soon (i run gentoo and it needs a lot of cpu power at times, btw).
i'm perfectly fine with what i have right now. remember the way it was when people were happy with their 800mhz p3's and didn't feel the urge to upgrade? i get that weird feeling that this time might come back soon.
