Phoronix: ET:QW Linux Demo Coming TODAY

We told you three days ago that the Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Linux demo was coming very soon. Well, we've just received confirmation that the Linux demo client will be available today! A new ET:QW Windows demo update is coming out about noon (CST) and the Linux demo will be out within a few hours after that.

Bah! Downloaded it, installed fine, but can't play due to useless 8.40 drivers on the 1950pro AGP trying to run the card as PCIE. Any chance this bug will be fixed in the 8.42 release?

Those screenshots are from the ATI card, right?
They look like Delta Force 2 graphics material to me :)

Just played it. It's nice, but imho not spectacular...

I didn't have any sound and graphics were kept very low ( can't use my X1950pro AGP yet )
The resolution was 640x480 because any higher reso resulted in a small window with a lot of mess around it.

Howdy, I can`t seem to unlock fps with the following cvars :(

seta com_unlock_maxFPS "60"
seta com_unlock_timingMethod "1"
seta com_unlockFPS "1"

its always stuck on 30fps , anybody else managed to run the game at more than 30fp ? thanks

edit: unlock seems only to work when playing on a server, not as single player against computer bots.

I tried it, seems like a good and polished game. However, the game autodetected that I should use 640x480 at Low settings on my ATI Radeon X1250. I changed it to 800x600 at Medium, and performance was very bad.
I'm DLing the Windows demo as we speak, to see if it gets any better results on Vista.

You'll just need to wait and find out, but I think most everyone should be pleased with 8.42.

I'll post what I'm able to run the game at based on my hardware (in sig) once I get home this afternonn. I started the download last night but it didn't finish in time for me to mess with it.

you should be able to play at maximum details without any problems.

Micheal, will you test this game with the new fglrx 8.42?

No question about it... Just waiting for the full binary release for timedemo capabilities.

The full binary will be out soon / someone is getting ready to benchmark some mysterious file right now :D

You don't have to wait, the demo has all you need for that. Press F12 to toggle demo recording, use

dir demos

to show recorded demo names

timeNetDemo demo_00000

to time first demo. All is stored in

.etqw/base/demos/

of course you can use

etwq +timeNetDemo demo_00000

to execute it directly.

Yes, I am familiar with all of that. But for benchmarking the different maps, etc I spend a lot of time deciding the map(s) and scene(s) to use for the actual demo(s) that will become standard for Phoronix benchmarks in ET:QW.

Well I would just use the demo map, as everybody could download your demo and test it himself.

The demo map is relatively 'simple' compared to some of the other maps in terms of weather effects, water, and lighting. There are also other maps which make heavier use of foliage.

I agree with what you're saying, but testing with the demo only might give a skewed benchmark.

Or unskewed... in that lower performing video cards would get more similar results to higher performing cards.

Well nobody says he could not use 2 or 3 maps to bench the game, but why not use the one that is in the demo too?

Michael

Valley (the demo), Slipgate, and Refinery are the maps that will be used.

Yeah, my x1900GT (575/1200) was detected at 800x600 on the ETQW demo and at medium detail. I set it to my native 1600x1200 and it ran...like...molasses. Other games such as Sauerbraten run very well on the card, often hitting the 100-150-200 FPS ceiling they have. I guess I'll wait for 8.42 also as I'm on the last stable R580 driver- 8.40.

Kano

The word "stable" is a bit overrated for ATI drivers. 8.40.4 fails to run google earth, 8.41.7 fails to run test 3/4 of gl2benchmark. 8.39.4 works mostly but slow... That means depending on the app you want to use you have to switch to the "best" fitting driver, very funny, isn't it...

Yes, Google Earth does hang. I haven't had any other problems with ATi drivers since the XVideo crash bug was fixed on AMD64 in 8.34. I don't use Google Earth much on my desktop anyway, so it's not a big deal to me.

I your case i really would use 8.41.7 for gaming.

All right, I'll give it a shot. It's not in Portage, but I'm a big boy :D

EDIT: 8.41.7 works a lot better than 8.40 did with gaming, too bad I had to restart my computer to install the driver (updated the kernel a while back and hadn't restarted in a month or so.) ETQW is now quite playable at 1600x1200 on my machine.

My results with the demo were not good with a AGP x1600xt running in PCI mode haha, and no the 8.41 driver doesn't work for me, plus, it wouldn't save me anyway due to the PCIE-AGP bus issue. Basically, the demo loaded up, I went with minimum settings at 640x480 because I already knew I was doomed due to the drivers situation.

So I loaded up the demo map, and I was suprised how bad minimum detail really looked in this game haha. I was running at about 10 fps. I was going to take a screenshot but when I did, it hardlocked my system. So if 8.42 is any better, and fixes my issues, I will post my results here on the day the driver comes out.

Btw. when you have got a good behaving ATI card, you just stop kdm, gdm or whatever you use, then

rmmod fglrx

and install other fglrx driver. After that start kdm/gdm again and it works. Only on my new system that does not work... When you switch from standard driver you do instead:

rmmod radeon drm

The same trick works for switching nvidia drivers, there you do of course:

rmmod nvidia

So how does one measure FPS on linux.Does ETQW have a integrated benchmark or do you use something like FRAPS?

Kano
10-20-2007, 02:17 AM
Well look at my post here:

http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showpost.php?p=15065&postcount=17

to use a timedemo or to show current fps you can use:

+com_showFPS 1

as startup option or you press ctrl+alt+~ and enter just

com_showFPS 1

in the console. A similar thing is possible for UT, there you press TAB and then

stat fps

Raven3x7

And how do i get avg FPS. does ETQW log the FPS in some file so i can calculate it?

Michael

i've seen all this before but current fps doesnt help me calculate avg fps unless its logged somewhere. I did a timedemo and seems to play in between 20-65 fps 1680x1050 at max settings, no AA. Playing against the PC fps are a bit lower. dunno about online yet. I'll try on windows later. thanks for the help anyway

I didn't get the FPS monitor to work, but my x1900GT runs at my monitor's native 1600x1200 with the 8.42 drivers, medium quality and it's certainly very playably smooth, so I guess over 30.

I'm just happy that there is a new, good Linux game out there and that my year-old GPU is more than up to the task with my relatively large monitors.
