What chipset are you using? Its possible that your chipset MAY be on the black listed chipsets. Even after whitelisting the driver, I needed to remove my chipset from the black list to enable desktop effects.
I am using intel X86 chipset
and refer to this link to install.

And i have some Graphic problems. Mostly Green/Blue pixels. On the grey of this message editor for instance.

Is anyone use Ubuntu 7.10?
I was install the 8.42 driver for five times,
but the desktop effects doesn't work?

Can someone give me a install introduction

Open /usr/bin/compiz with a root level text editor and add fglrx to the list of whitelisted drivers (toward the top of the file) and make sure your card isn't blacklisted in the section that follows.

Did you install the 8.42 driver successful?
Could you list your install steps for me?
Tanks a lot!

What BIG step? radeon open source works with things like compiz and xmame-opengl better than 8.42 and I don't remember I waited for radeon open source driver mornings and nights, 22 days. It exists since my first experience with linux, 1 year ago!

Well, I haven't tested 3D games yet, but even before 8.41, performance in 3D games for fglrx and opensource drivers were very different. I simply couldn't play even Warcraft III in wine, because most of the textures were missing. This makes something in fglrx better than opensource drivers.

And if the performance increased with it, AND it added AIGLX, AND corrected some of the serious bug fixes, this seems like a huge step to me.

Of course they couldn't make a perfect driver out of nowhere. If it is slower than XGL, or it still have some serios bugs, but it is far better than the previous drivers and the difference from a driver to another.

As I said before, it has started, now let the developers polish it to be better.

For those that are getting flickering while watching a video, do you have compiz enabled? If so, try enabling vertical refresh in the ATI catalyst control panel.
Under 3D -> More Settings -> Vertical Rerfrsh: I set the slider all the way to the right (Quality).

Thanks. Tried that, but it seems to help only a little. I still have significant flickering in videos and OpenGL apps. Without Compiz running, it was already pretty good though.

Thanks for you reply first!
Do you mean to insert "fglrx" to this line
# Driver whitelist
WHITELIST="nvidia intel ati radeon i810"

after insert it looks like this

# Driver whitelist
WHITELIST="nvidia intel ati radeon i810 fglrx"

I got this installed on my X1950 Pro AGP with a few problems:

Error in Xorg.0.log:
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] register handle = 0x00004000
(EE) fglrx(0): Failed to enable interrupts.

(II) fglrx(0): [agp] graphics chipset has AGP v3.0 (native mode)
(II) fglrx(0): DRI initialization successfull!

I also got the warnings from AIGLX about 3D driver not supporting lots of visuals.

I noticed this message in dmesg:
ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [APC1] enabled at IRQ 16
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:01:00.0[A] -> Link [APC1] -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 21

[fglrx] AGP enabled, AgpCommand = 0x1f004312 (selected caps)

It looks to me as the driver is saying it doesn't (yet) support something that is required for IRQ interrupts. I might try and disable ACPI tomorrow and see if that helps.

On the positive glxinfo, fglrxinfo are telling me acceleration is on. ATI CCC is working nicely and tells me AGP is on at 8x (before it was 0x as the driver thought it was a PCIE card).

Video is slooow, 3D is slower than with 8.40.x too :(. Glxgears gives 600 odd fps instead of 1210.

Anyone have any suggestions on getting interrupts to work?

Been trying a few things to stop this error, no joy. I've tried disabling ACPI in the kernel but interestingly libata then failed to find my sata drives, kinda glad I save previous kernel builds :D.

I've heard of a bug with the nForce3 AGP chipset and dual-core setup so I tried disabling SMP just in case: it made no difference to fglrx.

I could try kernel 2.6.23 (on 2.6.22 atm) but I doubt any agpgart code got changed, I'm still thinking the fglrx kernel message is saying something is disabled till full support is added.

And, for me, 8.41.7 is far better than 8.42.3 - I don't care about Desktop Effects, and 8.42.3 is less stable for me than 8.41.7 (and I don't see a /massive/ performance increase for the new driver, either). Indeed, none of the things I care about have been fixed with this driver, and some of them are broken with respect to 8.41.7 and 8.40.4!

So, my experience is that this is a horrible driver, and this experience is just as valid as yours.

anyone having any issues running amdcccle?

I had no problems with 8.40, but for whatever reason it just hangs upon execution with 8.42, never even paints a window, no error messages in terminal either.

Yep, I have had the same problems as you. although at first I attributed it to the fact I was running slackware-current. but it has continue through the releases.

As you say, it doesn't output anything anywhere. it is running, it does not become a dead or zombie process, but there is nothing that comes to the screen.

No idea where to look either.

screen corruption doesn't verify with 8.40. The new driver as said is an horrible driver. It added AIGLX but what can I do with flickering videos or unusable apps?
It's like "yes, we added the support to aiglx only to make you wait for some year something that will not work!"
I cannot use compiz
I cannot use video players
I cannot use opengl mame
I cannot do anything I could do before the release.
This driver is not a good work.
Open source driver is a good work because without specifics they couldn't do better and for many things is better than fglrx.

Not sure what your issue is? I just ran the executable as usual with previous drivers.

With changes as discussed in this thread in xorg.conf if you want to enable aiglx.

Worked fine out of the box. (Note that with previous versions I had to change a couple of things in Selinux - if you have it enabled.- You needed to "allow programs to read files in nonstandard locations. I have not checked whether this is still needed with the current driver.)

Installed and running 8.42.3. I had to do a "ln -s libGL.so.1.2 libGL.so.1" to fix the missing libGL issue.

Problems:

Suspend still doesn't work on Ubuntu 7.10, Ubuntu bug #121653 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/121653), as the new SLUB allocator prevents fglrx from suspending.
Selecting xv in xine crashes X (returns to gdm).
Non-xv video (with TexturedVideo enabled) runs and is smooth, but it flickers a lot (in fullscreen too).
Same for OpenGL apps.
OpenGL apps and videos (with TexturedVideo) are drawn directly on screen, i.e. compiz can't zoom them or map them onto the sides of the cube while rotating, they remain on the screen in their original size/position.
Getting occasional compiz freezes (with mouse pointer still moving) as in Ubuntu bug #108527 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/108527) and in Compiz Fusion bug #524 (http://bugs.opencompositing.org/show_bug.cgi?id=524). After the freeze I was able to do Alt-SysRq-R and switch to a terminal to see compiz.real using 100% cpu (infinite loop somewhere?).
Typing on gnome text-editor is really slow (holding a key pressed), while doing it on emacs-gtk seems as fast as before.
Scrolling in Firefox is pretty slow, compared to when Compiz is not running.

I think introducing AIGLX support is a pretty big step for AMD, and hopefully we'll see it get better and better in terms of performance, right Michael? :)

BTW Michael, which of these problems can we expect to be fixed in next month's driver?

I get the same problem, although I haven't had compiz freeze one me.

One good thing about this driver is that before Linux Neverwinter Night was very unplayable (5FPS) and has now because VERY playable (50FPS). It actually played better than on Vista both in frame rate and the fact that environmental mapping on creatures WORKS in Linux. Very happy about that. Hope they can sort out the rest of the snag. I'm so close to be able to completely unload Vista...

Well, I switched back to XGL because the performance was way better. It's great that they added AIGLX, but I think I'll wait until they fine tune it so it's ready for prime time.

I may even go back to 8.40.4, as the performance on my card seems to have been better with that driver than this new one.

Don't get me wrong, I do like the AIGLX, I just think it needs WAY more tuning to eliminate choppiness, video flickering, etc.

I was a little disappointed to find that 8.42.3 does not support the FireGL V5250 in my Thinkpad T60p.

So I applied the patch (successfully) specifying
#define HACK_PCIID 0x71c4

-- this is the pci id of my V5250 as reported by /sbin/lspci -n

I then built my xorg.conf with the crucial addition of
ChipId 0x71c5

in the "Device" section

-- other varient suggestions are welcome

X starts, but I've yet to get a workable config.

I was hoping I'd have decent power management/screen flipping at last, but so far 8.42 has been disappointing.

Has anyone gone through a similar process with 8.42?

Also ccc doesn't run

There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Centre..

- possibly due to the patched pci id?

I used it for about 30 minutes (Ubuntu 7.10) before I found that it was slower than the FGLRX+XGL I had been using earlier. Video was better with XGL, as was simple things like moving a window and switching applications.

The difference was minor, to be sure (maybe 10-20%), but noticable - and since I don't use any DRI apps then XGL is the ticket for me. It was pretty cool to be running compiz and having glxinfo show the full DRI support.

That said, now that AIGLX is actually _IN THE DRIVER_ it will probably improve such that in the next release or two it will surpass the performance I enjoy with XGL today.

Oh, and the video tearing was AWFUL. It was very bad with XV, GL, and GL2 in MPlayer. Yikes.

EDIT:

Yes, I tried XGL on top of 8.42.3. It was faster than AIGLX, but still slower than the previous driver. My guess is that with the driver rewrite they optimized the rendering paths for more "game" style needs (lots of polys, multitextures, bump mapping), but not the kinds of things compiz needs (big areas with textures that are 1:1 for screen pixels). Compiz competes with the functional eye-candy of Vista and Leopard - and with the newest Linux distros running it by default, the speed will eventually get there I'm sure.

EDIT2:

If there are some xorg.conf options I could try to boost AIGLX (and video playback) performance, I'd love to try them out. The straight 2d performance of the FGLRX driver is quite nice (using metacity), so a combination of that with the 3d accellerated stuff would be amazing. I feel confident that they will eventually get there.

With the new driver bigdesktop (dual head) is working with compiz and aiglx, but still buggy and crash on second desktop (monitor). Video is broken with Xv. Flickering when playing games and google earth. Bad framrates too.

The performance with 8.40.4 is fast on ATI Mobility X1800 without XGL. With XGL compiz fusion don't work on gutsy.

I got compiz fusion working with the latest fglrx 8.37 drivers from repository, that is very stable.

My conclusion for now: Better no compiz fusion and desktop effects. So no fun with the new ati driver

So I guess the biggest issues here are:

- Uber-flickery video with Xv AND Compiz enabled.
- Uber-flickery games with Xv AND Compiz enabled.
- Less smooth scrolling (ex. Firefox)

Now, here's the other question: I take it you don't experience any flickering with Compiz off, but still using Xv?

Okay, I managed to solve my problems with UT2k4:

After switching back to kernel 2.6.22.9, still the same problems.
Switching back to xorg-server 1.3 did not help either.
Since UT2k4 did even manage to halt the whole system I did look which other things might case the problem and found it:
x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-6.7.195 was causing the problems. I did now downgrade my gentoo x86 system to x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-6.6.193 and everything seems to work.

So to summon things up:

On my system (gentoo unstable, x86, radeon 9800pro agp, core2duo 6400, 1GB ddr1 ram) the new 8.42.3 driver does work nicely. I can run Neverball at 1600x1200 without problems and UT2k4 is playable at 1920x1200 all things maxed out (sometimes frames drop below 25fps, but that is really seldom).
The driver does work with a 2.6.23.1 kernel using the "normal" gentoo patches. xorg server 1.4 does work as expected, too. xv overlay does work as expected with tvtime and watching videos does not cause any problems. So basically everything I can test does work as expected, for me it is a really good driver release.
The only thing I did not test (since I don't have a real use for it) is aiglx/compiz support.

Just rolled back to 8.40 because 8.42 was 20 steps backwards for me.

Compiz is far more choppy under AIGLX than it ever was under XGL. Nice work there.

Firefox is close to unusable with the horrible 2d performance and none of the usability features of Compiz (fake expose, etc) are useful when Firefox is open due to said choppiness.

World of Warcraft is completely broken in 8.42, both with Compiz enabled and without. I did notice an increase in FPS, but perhaps that was because the new driver doesn't render any player models. Apparently the same thing is happening with many other OpenGL games.

Seriously ATI? This was what we've been waiting for from you for months? 8.42 was your big chance to redeem yourselves in the eyes of the community, and all you had to do was play catchup with nVidia. Instead, you delivered a horribly buggy POS driver with actually decreased functionality from previous versions.

This whole charade of "next month it'll be a lot better, we promise! *wink* *wink*" has finally come to an end.

Sure, I'm going to keep coming back to Phoronix at the end of every month to check out the newest driver, but this was your last chance to convince me that you deserve my continued patronage. My next computer will definitely not have an ATI card and I'll be recommending to others that they stay far far away from ATI.

Anyone could fix the slow scrolling issue?

Did you turn desktop effects on?
If desktop effects are running, scrolling and moving windows are much faster.

Well, it's mostly good news for me - my standard "benchmarking tools" of ut2004, doom3 & ppracer all work just fine with a good deal better performance. I don't have compiz running yet, but I don't think that's anything to do with fglrx (the whole GLX_EXT_Texture_from_Pixmap error that I haven't had time yet to sort out).
I also have a few other issues, though I also just updated xorg so it could be in there too; glxinfo doesn't return information until after the first time I open an OpenGL application, and no OpenGL (fullscreen) windows will open the first time I try - subsequent attempts work just fine. Again, especially the latter, I think it's more to do with the xorg update.
Running Gentoo64, radeon x1600.
All-in-all, cheers ATI!

how do i do that for mplayer because as far as I kno I can only do it from the command line.

mplayer -vo x11

that doesnt work because I have to chose a file and I want it to be x11 for everything.

With gstreamer-properties I can set the video output plugin to X Window System (without Xv), then all my videos with mplayer play without Xv and no flickers anymore.

I think in ubuntu (iirc), desktop effects is just another name for compiz/compiz-fusion

I've installed 8.42.3 both on Ubuntu Feisty and PCLinuxOS with same results:

whenever I execute 'glxgears', 'fgl_glxgears', running 3d game or screensaver I get a blank window or a black display.

'cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep "EE"' gives me this error:

(EE) fglrx(0): Failed to enable interrupts.

'fglrxinfo' is ok:

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Radeon X1950 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6958 Release

IMO 8.42.3 suck, ATI sucked, sucks and will continue to suck. that will gonna be my last ATI video card ever, my next one will be Nvidia. ATI still does'nt pay attention to older than HD series products. they promised 8.42 will solve older AGP cards problems which it didn't as I anticipated.

-Waiting whole 3 months was a huge waste of time for me, I've done being ATI's sucker anymore.

NOT working with Fedora Core 6 2.6.22.9-61.fc6 x86_64 and X1950 Pro (AGP)
Same error but X doesn't start (I must reset the PC).

Hello again,

Finally home. I have installed using the script.
Installation successful but could not load the desktop effects.
I have a laptop with a ATI 9600 onboard.
The fglrxinfo return ATI openGL 2.0
The co,posite option is enabled in the xorg.conf !

Please help debugging

More information would be helpful (or rather I should say needed) before we can even know what's wrong with your setup.

Just been experimenting with this driver on a V5250 (pci id hacked).

Not good
- 2nd screen will only run at 1024 x 768 instead of 1600x1200
- blank screen after suspend

8.35 appears to work better.

Big disappointment. Best not get my hopes up too much for 8.43

If anyone does get a good mobile config up and running (even without Xgl/AIGLX) I'd be interested, but I've now gone back to 8.35. Not perfect but best so far... (on laptop)

Overall a very good release,
OpenGL apps are way more faster.

Compiz working :) BUT no video when Compiz is enabled.
Compiz doesn't feel very fast, although the fps benchmark shows different.

Also with kernel 2.6.22 suspend and Hibernating doesn't work, I had to revert to kernel 2.6.20 (SUSPEND working !!!).
It has something to do with SLUB and/or SLAB ??? don't have a clue.

SO now I'm using kUbuntu 7.10 with 2.6.20 kernel and 8.42.3 fglrx driver.

Off topic: with kubuntu 7.10 for the first time my broadcom wifi chipset works without ndiswrapper, but it also has some problems with suspend, so I guess I will revert this back to ndiswrapper too :(

Well, I installed 8.42.3. I don't really care about the desktop effects as much as I care about having smooth video playback, which I was hoping that this driver would improve, removing tearing, etc. Before installing this driver, OpenGL was providing smooth video playback. Now OpenGL video playback is worse than using X11 Video, which is still worse than OpenGL. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get the OpenGL playback to what it was before? glxgears does report a 5-fold increase in performance from 8.37 at the very least, which is what I was using before.

Any ideas why I keep losing this symlink?

/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/volatile/fglrx.ko

Everytime I reboot, it's gone and I have to re-create the link. It's driving me insane.

Hint: volatile :)

That stuff is generated by the linux-kernel-restricted package... remove that package if you aren't using any restricted drivers. The symlink in the wiki is totally unnecessary if you run "depmod -ae" and add fglrx to /etc/defaults/linux-kernel-restricted-modules (as per the wiki).

Just to be clear...
"depmod -ae"
Will prevent me from having to create the symlink at all? I guess the wiki just makes it overkill ?

desktop effects i mean the options in "visual effects" settings. (none, normal, extra and custom)

As I said, compiz fusion running fine under gutsy with the new aiglx feature without xgl. The worst thing is that video and games flicker too much.

Got the new driver installed on my gutsy 64bit yesterday and all the fancy effects working and so on. But all the effects lag a lot (besides the cube), and also when watching Mplayer video and sound is not in sync. Also Firefox lags a lot. Anything i can do? or is it just to wait for new updates and drivers.

PS. specs are amd64 4200+, ATI X1800XT, 1 GB DDR2 (so there should be enough juice)

I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 64-bit with a Sapphire X1650XT card, 256 MB RAM on card. OpenGL screensavers with 8.42.3 have artifacts along the bottom half of the screen. Wolfenstein Enemy Territory (not Quake Wars) still runs but like 8.41, the brightness control does not change the brightness at all. Still tearing with AVI or most other videos. The only improvements I've noticed is that AIGLX works, and HD videos play much better, neither of which have any compelling use to me.

I'm going back to 8.40.4, it simply works better for my needs.

hey all, first time posting so im not sure on how the forum runs but i figured id have a comment on the divers and my experience.

over all the fglrx drivers with xserver-xgl worked more smoothly for compiz.. but id always have to disable compiz to play opengl games.. with these new drivers i dont have to disable compiz (ive tested doom3, quake4, and ut2004)... i havent had the games crash yet.. ill need to do some more "testing"..

the flickering ive found (maybe someone has a better idea/reason), is due to dropping the native resolution down to something lower than default desktop res.. eg, my laptops default (native) screen res is 1440x900.. in doom i have my screen set at 1024x768 and it flickers, in quake4 i set my screen res to custom and used the console to set the screen res to 1440x900 and no problem.. it looks good and runs faster than fglrx.. i guess its obvious that i havent done extensive testing.. havent had time... yet ;)

for firefox scrolling ive found that turning off smooth scrolling helps.. also, compiz runs smoothly when no apps are accessing the cpu (or ram) alot.. if i have ktorrent running or/and firefox, compiz seems jerky, if i dont have either/both of them running.. its smooth..

havent noticed a problem with wine.. although i only use wine for diablo II and Starcraft (havent tested starcraft yet)

and as for video playback.. i just followed what everyone else on the forum has been doing.

heres a link to the guide i used for installing the drivers
http://forlong.blogage.de/article/2007/10/23/fglrx-8423---finally-with-AIGLX-support

and following is my xorg.conf file... you guys might know a few things that can be added to help performance.. but from hacking around with it.. ive found this config works nice

(btw.. when i said first time posting above, i meant first time posting generally.. i havent really ever posted in forums before, so im unsure of forum code for quoting and stuff.. sry guys) hope this stuff helps some people

I used 8.37.6 from when it was released until a day ago because 8.37 proved stable and there were no significant changes in the releases prior to 8.42.

Installation following the instructions at http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Gutsy_Installation_Guide method 2 was reasonably smooth, the one thing that is missing from those instructions is that an additional link is needed as follows:

ln -s /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/misc/fglrx.ko /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/drivers/video/fglrx.ko

followed by depmod -a, otherwise the kernel module doesn't get loaded automatically after a reboot.

Overall, all that worked in 8.37.6 still works in 8.42.3, just quicker.

AIGLX and Composite work, but as others have reported there is severe flickering in video (both xv and opengl) when compiz is running, and compiz slows down Firefox scrolling.

OTOH, the KDE3 native compositing effects now work for the first time, and very smoothly! The video flickering and firefox slowdown does not occur with KDE compositing.

When playing video, both xv and opengl output work, though opengl output is noticeably crisper. The only thing I notice is a slight tearing during pans.

Overall, I see a definite improvement since 8.37.6

Main open issues from my point of view (any AMD developers listening?):

suspend is broken on kernels using the slub allocator. This is really bad, if I could ask for just one thing for 8.43 that would be it.

power management: I currently have aticonfig --set-powerstate=1 in the startup script, which works fine. I then set it to 3 manually when using something heavily reliant on 3D. It would be really nice if this could be somehow done automatically (the way the CPU changes frequency dynamically, depending on load). I know there is atieventsd but it seems to be very limited and I didn't find much documentation on it either.

Chris

Post to the BugZilla at ati.cchtml.com

the bug is already posted.

Are you sure that the ati developers are looking to that bugzilla? it is there since a long time, and they think the bug is fixed, since in an old release note (8.37) they were listing a similar bug in the "resolved issues" section (see below)

That's interesting. The new driver hasn't fixed this problem for me. I'm guessing you're not using Ubuntu, right?

Oh well, the next driver is supposed to fix this by introducing 2.6.23 kernel support (which comes with SLUB by default).

Actually, am using 7.10 of Ubuntu. Have never gotten the fglrx drivers to work after resume still though, so it's not exactly usable...

yea, the drivers are not up on the page, yet how to install them is on cchtml, about all i could come up with is they want some "beta testing" done then at the endo of the month they will release the real 8.42 drivers, with some of the bugs fixed.

we can only hope...

Hi, if this has been answerd before, i'll gladly (try) to read back.

I'm running this driver on an X1950Pro AGP and I get 'sluggish' performance. E.G. ET (not QW!) i get 110FPS at one point, but 20FPS by just looking around (empty server) and it feels more like ... 5 fps.

Wine (WoW) same thing, sluggish slow/fast mixed performance. Now the wine thing I may get, but the game run better 6 months ago on my 9500Pro on an Athlon XP (2.5Ghz barton, ~3400+) compared to my dualcore 2.4ghz Athlon XP (~4900+ *2) CPU load is very low (mostly if I use the ondemand gov. cpu speed stays at 1Ghz, though the performance gov. doesn't change anything).

Any thoughts/pointers?
Thanks, oliver

I, for one, have to say that I am VERY happy with this release. I only recently entered the ATI/Linux arena when I bought my laptop, but I have used ATI products with windows for several years. Obviously, the performance isn't what everyone hoped for, I, personally, am VERY happy looking at the performance in Ubuntu versus the performance of the last ATI proprietary drivers. I don't play any games, haven't really since the original Unreal Tournament, so maybe that has something to do with it. I have, however, used compiz under feisty/gutsy, with both the XGL method and the proprietary drivers. Performance without AIGLX was mediocre at best. After doing a fresh gutsy install, on an AMD64, installing the drivers by building a package using the patch that Michael posted, then whitelisting the drivers for compiz use. Compiz runs better than ever on all aspects. With XGL and the xorg drivers effects such as burn on open/close, paint fire, and also water were horribly slow. Now, they look great and function extremely well. The video is, of course, terrible at fullscreen, but i'm positive it will be better in the next release. This driver is a HUGE STEP FORWARD for ATI, and they are proving that they have legitimate concerns about making these cards work in Linux. A fully working release is gonna take time, and I know a lot of people here have been dealing with workarounds to get their stuff working even halfway decent, but, also, ATI works pretty damn well in windows. One thing that I hate is the fact that I have to wait for Toshiba to release the updated drivers for windows, even though I have an ATI/AMD pc, but with Linux anything released will run on my lappy. I love Linux, the versatility is immaculate, I even bought an Asus WL500gP to run oleg's openwrt on. I've installed DD-WRT on several linksys's, but this was my first asus, and they are awesome. Anyways, i'm just saying give these guys some credit for what they do, and if you want to complain that hard, develop some decent drivers yourself. ATI's even trying to make the move toward open-source, which is only logical, think about it, if they release the source to the community, the devolopement will happen AT LEAST 5 times faster. Maybe people that are having major problems and aren't seeing any improvement aren't properly installing the drivers, I don't know. I have a Toshiba Satellite A215-S4757 with an ATI Radeon Mobility X1200. I followed the tutorial from the ubuntuforums for installing the drivers from the package I built using the installer and the patch that Michael posted. Then I followed the ubuntuforum instructions for enabling compiz w/ fglrx. This was done on a fresh install of gutsy/64.

Well the 8.42.3 driver still has major screen tearing, while there is almost 1000 more fps in glx gears, watching video is awful ,so it's back to the older 8.34 drivers for me as they have decent 2d performance. What a let down :{

Anyways, in case anyone actually uses this info to improve the driver somehow, I'm running an HP nc8430 featuring an onboard ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 and SLED10. Perhaps another distro would perform better or there's something I'm not doing, however considering I don't have problems with the older driver AND that ATI said screen tearing IS present in former release notes, I'm inclined to think it's a driver issue.

Any ideas anyone?

Whoa, just went back to the ATI open source driver. Performance difference (with compiz) is like day and night. Heck, even HD video performance with compiz is pretty good with the open-source driver. And suspend is actually working there. If the open source driver didn't freeze X on this mobility X300 every few hours, I could actually stay with it.

I hope the AMD proprietary driver becomes as good as the open source driver soon (sounds like a joke)! Hopefully the next one will deliver some performance improvements and suspend fixes.

are you using compiz or not, if you are then try disableing it to run games, that may do the trick, the other thing may the problems with AGP and the drivers (but i thought they had resolved that with these drivers, or it may of been the open source version) all in all just try disabling compiz, u really shouldn't be having these problems though.

8.42.3 Tested on Slackware 12 + Compiz Fusion + Radeon 9600.

1) AIGLX is a TOTAL DELUSION. The fps is less than XGL. Firefox scrolling seems like a 286 dir command (on dos).
Radeon open source driver is better!

Same here on Gutsy, I'm totally disappointed by aiglx performance which is worse than what provided by radeon open driver

Ok guys, I'm still having problems running compiz, even after trying all the solutions provided here.

I'm running Debian sid with Xpress 200M, xorg 7.3, compiz 0.5.2. I'm getting the same GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap problem many people here seem to have:

compiz --replace
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not available with direct rendering.
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not available with indirect rendering. Aborting!

The proposed solutions using LD_PRELOAD and LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT don't do a thing. Looking at /usr/bin/compiz, I see that it's a wrapper script for compiz.real. It first greps glxinfo for GLX_EXT_texture_from_bitmap and checks if it return at least three lines - no idea why! Checking glxinfo manually shows me that GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap occurs only twice. Anyway, if the above fails, the script exports LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true and tries again. If neither check succeeds, it exits with the above errors.

Now the fun part. I tried manually exporting LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true and running compiz.real directly. This gives me a seg fault. Moreover, after LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true glxinfo produces the following instead of the expect result:

export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true
glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
X Error of failed request: GLXBadContext
Major opcode of failed request: 162 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request: 16
Current serial number in output stream: 16

Any ideas?

I had the GLXBadContext Problem and after setting LIBGL_DEBUG to verbose I found out that it was looking for fglrx_dri.so in the wrong place. I symlinked /usr/lib/dri/fgrlx_dri.so to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so and now glxinfo, glxgears, fglrxinfo.. etc seem to work, unfortunately beryl and compiz.real give me the message still. I'm using debian Sid with Xorg 7.3,fglrx 8.42.3 and no matter what version of beryl or compiz/fusion I try to start.

All you ATI bashers, tell me: do you think anybody gives a damn about your whining? I guess not. So make yourself a separate thread for that (oh well, you already did that) oh create your own forum at, let's say, atisucksbad.com or whatever...

Personally I have Radeon 9550 and it works kewl with xorg-server 1.3. I had segfaults and app startup hangups on 1.4, as said above. I only want non-flickering video with AIGLX and I'm golden...

Well, for me, the good news is they got rid of the mouse and watermark corruption.
I tried Compiz and decided I wouldn't wanna run it since it looks buggy.
Xv is sort of back but with the same lame performance if not worse before they broke it.

All in all it reminds me of previous releases minus the corruption.

I guess my type would be radeonHD in summer of 2008. Guess, ati makes you grow old faster. I can remember the first time I stumbled upon these drivers...

Conclusion is, I will never be able to watch an .mkv x264 through the 2nd display as if its on Windows. Thanks ati, you're best at keeping people stuck to Windows ;). Atleast you're best in something. ;)

Lucky you, you have a system that works reasonably with the new drivers in some configuration. Some of us don't - with xorg-server 1.3, even. Do you seriously blame people who've had systems which haven't worked properly with the drivers for months for not being in a good mood?

And if you'd like to ask, I dualboot. With Windows Server 2003. I suppose I have fewer reasons to switch to nvidia then ;)

Indeed so. This is probably why you have lowered expectations.

Actually, customer support would appreciate decent explanations of what is going wrong as opposed to "it doesn't work". I can understand people wanting something that works nicely with everything, but I also don't understand why people are so quick to blame _everything_ upon ati. Kernel versions, xorg versions, distro-specific patch sets, even window managers can all contribute, and I'll admit I don't like people automatically saying "it's ati's fault!" without actually seeing whether it is or not. I have better game performance when using enlightenment than when using fluxbox - where does the problem lie there? Probably somewhere in the wm code, not ati's drivers.
I can also assure people that nvidia drivers have their fair share of issues too - just different ones than with ati.

Actually, customer support would appreciate decent explanations of what is going wrong as opposed to "it doesn't work".

You mean like the full tracebacks and logs I posted with both of my problems? And the fact that at least one of them appears to have been submitted to the bugzilla some time ago by someone else?

I can understand people wanting something that works nicely with everything, but I also don't understand why people are so quick to blame _everything_ upon ati.

Admittedly, this is partly the fault of raised expectations from people (like Michael, for example) who play with the beta versions of the drivers, have them work perfectly and then hint at how everyone will love the new driver...
I don't blame people for being excited when their systems work awesomely with a new release - it's just that the build up of expectation is counterproductive when this isn't the case for others.
And no, this isn't entirely ATI's fault - although, arguably, the fixed monthly release contributes to this by restricting the amount of new stuff that can come with each new driver, and slowing the availability of new features.
People would also be more inclined to be supportive if, for example, ATI admitted that some support in each driver is beta - the AIGLX support in the current driver, if we'd been told it was "beta and experimental", would have gotten much better press from those with which it fails to work well.

Probably somewhere in the wm code, not ati's drivers.
I can also assure people that nvidia drivers have their fair share of issues too - just different ones than with ati.

Indeed, but for things I care about, the nvidia drivers seem to provide better support.
(And this is, of course, what this comes down to - the different priorities of different people versus the priorities of the driver releases. Everyone who "just wanted AIGLX support" is ecstatic about this release because it gives them that - the people who didn't care about that aren't so happy, because their concerns haven't been addressed.)

If I'm having a RV350 or something like that I would have used the open source driver and laugh god darn it

But in fact we R500/R600 users are being pissed off yet again that's something You've never experienced!

The slow scroll thing, I've noticed it since 8.41. I've only tried 8.41 for 2 days and rolled back to 8.40. Now the first impression of installing 8.42 was, up on log in to X, white border all over the gnome panel and menus, choppy animation in opening windows, super flacky video and opengl applications, totally disappointed! Tried fire up Quake 4 and load a level... vola! Heavy screen corruption from middle to bottom half of screen! This must due to their broken Hi-Z in the driver. Don't ask me why I know that, I've been a D3D programmer for over 10 years.

If you've been through this open-browser-type-in-phoronix-prey-they-announce-fglrx-8.42-every-day-in-the-morning sort of life, I bet you would have had worse reactions than most of us! I really don't wanna bash on people so don't be an ass and force me to do so.

Even running in Xgl with 8.42 still didn't solve the laggy scroll and open problem, the problem must have introduced in the new OGL code base.

Before 8.41.7 driver I used open source radeon driver on my system with multiseat dualhead on Kubuntu 6.06 but without 3D acceleration because I used xephyr for xservers on separated monitors.
After 8.41.7 was released I've read many comments about how bad it is and I've said I'll give it a try on Kubuntu 7.04 and I've said I can live with these bugs to time when 8.42 will be release which will have AIGLX and 'EVERYTHING fixed' (quoted from ATI developer in the thread before).
Now I've installed 8.42.3 and I was really disapointed - I haven't saw any difference between 8.41.7 and 8.42.3 - corrupted watermarks in the lower right corner and with mouse, black screen when I run kdetv to watch tv etc., I can't specify which displays I want to enable or disable and I can't force monitors.
I can't run compiz/compiz fussion - tried 0.3.6, 0.5.2, 0.5.5 versions and I can't run any of these versions - when screens are one below the other I have glxinfo and compiz crashes on the second screen and when the screens are one on right/left the other glxinfo goes ok but for one screen only and compiz refuses to start because of maximal texture size overlimit. I've tried to force compiz use only one screen but it's not running because of "compiz (core) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing" bug - workarounds from LD_PRELOAD to --always-indirect etc. didn't help.
Now I'm thinking to go back to open source radeon driver.

Hey you guys, stop fighting about bull shit. If you want to fight, make a new thread but please don't taint this one anymore so it can remain on the discussion of the 8.42 fglrx driver.

Can someone know why i have this problem?

I would suggest commenting the following lines (in red)

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AQ [Radeon 9600]"
Driver "fglrx"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps"
Option "UseFastTLS" "2"
Option "BusType" "AGP"
Option "PseudoColorVisuals" "off"
Option "TexturedVideo" "true"
Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "no"
Option "mtrr" "off"
Option "no_accel" "no"
Option "no_dri" "no"
Option "EnablePrivateBackZ" "no"
EndSection

Once everything is running, start adding them back in to see what breaks X.

Well, i tried before only with Driver and Bus, and commenting all Options, but i have the same problem, fglrxinfo shows ati driver, and glxinfo shows the same problem.

Hey Michael, maybe you know a solution for this.
Normally, if the signature isn't installed there will be a watermark in the lower right corner of the screen.
Now I've got the signature file installed and there is no watermark, but sometimes (I couldn't find out what triggers this.) there are two lines of garbage, which seem to have the same width the watermark has.

I'll make a screen, is it possible to attach images to your post?

Edit: I just realized, that on a screenshot this is not present, so it's definitely a problem of the graphics driver.

Fenix-TX,

Change the following two sections to "on" and "1" respectively.

#Section "ServerFlags"
# Option "AIGLX" "off"
#EndSection

#Section "Extensions"
# Option "Composite" "Disable"
#EndSection

Let us know how you make out with that.

I don't think I've seen this. Post the image to like www.imageshack.us and then post a link here.
