Today it's now time where the fglrx driver reaches yet another milestone. Not only does today's release address many of the outstanding bugs for the earlier GPU generations while also introducing a few new features, but it also delivers AIGLX support! Yes, you read that right. You can finally run your ATI graphics card with the fglrx driver and run Compiz, Beryl, or Compiz Fusion without using XGL! This is coming 13 months after NVIDIA had introduced its AIGLX support, but now just days after the release of Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon it's here for ATI hardware. Granted, if you were using an older ATI GPU with the open-source Radeon driver, you could have been benefiting from AIGLX already.

ah well.... any hacks to get firegl-support? I kinda knew it, but had to try anyhow. would really like to give my mobility v5200 a run for the money. Kano?

kinda weird that the devices that gave name to the driver are shunned.

I wish I brought my lappy to work today. I am reservedly optimistic about this release. But finally getting away from the vesa driver I've been using for the past week will be great.

Okay, first results:
Renaming the old ebuild (8.40.7) is enough (you have to rename the corresponding patches folder inside files/, too), the driver works with xorg 7.3 (xorg-server 1.4) and with kernel 2.6.23 (using the patches). I am running on x86, so amd64 users might have problems with the patch.

Okay, looks like I was a little bit too fast, after testing with neverball and asuming everything else would work as expected, too. I did now fire up UT2k4 and when switching to a higher vertical resolution I do get graphic corruptions:
http://img132.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ut2k4problemsil1.png

This does not happen when being at small resolutions, only at higher resolutions and so far only in UT2k3. I would assume that it is kernel 2.6.23 related (since with 2.6.22.6 there was no problem). And I do get a nice message in the terminal after starting ut2k4:
WARNING: ALC_EXT_capture is subject to change!
Xlib: extension "XiG-SUNDRY-NONSTANDARD" missing on display ":0.0".

Would be nice to see those problems fixed, might be that it is the combination of running ut2k4 with xorg 1.4 and a kernel 2.6.23 on gentoo...

(Just for reference: I am using a radeon 9800 pro (agp), c2d 6400, 1GB DDR1 ram, arch: x86)

EDIT:
Okay, I just verified that my problems can be solved by downgrading the kernel to 2.6.22.9. This change makes ut2k4 and fgl_glxgears work again, both were not working with kernel 2.6.23.1.

Okay, so successfully installed by building a package for Ubuntu/Feisty. It runs quite nicely (unlike 8.41) and there is a performance improvement.

...at least about 300 FPS greater than 8.40 in glxgears. I'm about to check out AIGLX and Compiz Fusion shortly.

zmaster

hmmm strange... the ATI's website still shows up the 8.41 driver for R600 chips and the old 8.40 driver for non-R600 ones. I guess they did not update it yet...

And by the way, the driver is labeled "8.42.7", but in the Phoronix article (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=887&num=3) it is referred to as "8.42.3". Which one is right?

I commented out the gunzip part, now I get this:

*
* /usr/portage/x11-drivers/ati-drivers/files/8.42.3/ati-drivers-8.42.3-warnings.patch
* ( ati-drivers-8.42.3-warnings.patch )

I renamed the patch 8.40 to 8.42... Is that correct?

EDIT: fixed, I didn't create the 8.42.3 directory :)

Well make sure everything is proper by running glxinfo and glxgears. (and make sure you don't have Mesa running by accident).

As for gutsy, I haven't tested it, though I will in the next couple days.
EDIT: If you have the Composite extension disabled in your xorg.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, make sure you re-enable it.

EDIT2: Compiz is now successfully running without a hitch. AIGLX is here to stay, and it's stable on my setup. The only thing I need to fix is my conky window which is now out of alignment for some odd reason. Nothing a little config file tweaking can't fix.

8.42.3 Tested on Slackware 12 + Compiz Fusion + Radeon 9600.

1) AIGLX is a TOTAL DELUSION. The fps is less than XGL. Firefox scrolling seems like a 286 dir command (on dos).
Radeon open source driver is better!

2) Xmame in opengl mode is worst than with radeon open source driver.

Why did we wait for so much time?
Why did we believe to ATI?
Why -I- bought an ATI card?

Installation worked flawless for me on Ubuntu Gutsy. Whitelisted fglrx in /usr/bin/compiz on line 54 (someone asked how to do it previously).

Performance is not really good. Worse than the opensource ati driver (like kirù said). Did I miss enabling some options in xorg.conf?

Any clue which options I should activate in my "Xorg.conf" config file in order to enable Compiz via AIGLX? When running
compiz.real --indirect-rendering --replace I'm getting a message telling me that the composite extension is not enabled on my system.

Also, when I installed it (on Gutsy), it seems the package did not create a necessary symbolic link (ie. in /usr/lib libGL.so.1 was not found, but libGL.so.1.2 was, so I created a symbolic pointing from libGL.so.1 to libGL.so.1.2 and it did the trick).

I can't run compiz :(

I enabled "composite" and AIGLX in xorg.conf.

DRI is enabled too:

I tried following this howto (I run Gentoo amd64): http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_XGL/Troubleshooting#GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap_is_mis sing

both give me the same output...

What am I missing?

You didn't follow all of the guide it seems. Did you look for where the mesa files are? Once you do:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=[path to mesa goes here] compiz --replace gconf &

Or so it seems. Try that out.

Hi,
the new driver is great, but I don't seem to have X-Video support. Is there any way to enable it?

Code:

$ xvinfo
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
no adaptors present

Code:

$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI MOBILITY RADEON X700
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (2.0.6958 Release)

Distribution is Ubuntu 7.10.

sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv
Then restart X and see if that works.

Okay so after a lot of use, I can report essentially no problems...except one.

- glxgears tends to flicker a bit. Whether this applies to games I don't know as I don't have et:qw on hand to try (and I'm at work).

Anyone else have that problem?
...and glxgears runs at 2250 FPS roughly on an ati x1400. 800ish FPS on powersaving mode.

fwiw -- I also had a case of the white screen issue upon first try.

I checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and found that AIGLX was trying to initialize an old copy of fglrx_dri.so, which was located in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so

I copied the new version (which the ati installed installed in /usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so) over the one in the old location, and now compiz starts up with no white screen.

I noticed that scrolling in firefox and my terminal are both pretty slow, but cube spinning performance is lightning quick. Anyone else experience slow scrolling?

Unfortunately I got the same problem when enabling AIGLX on Ubuntu 7.10 on a laptop containing a x1600 Mobility Radeon (GLX_ext_texture_from_pixmap extension missing).

Output is :

compiz.real (core) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz.real (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Any clue? The LD_PRELOAD trick does not seems to work either, and seems related to XGL...

EDIT: my xorg.conf file lists GLX_ext_texture_from_pixmap as an available extension.

I have this strangest bug for quite some time now, and its the same with this newest version of fglrx. Same goes for different kernels and Xorg versions.

Thing is, X hangs when I try to start a second X, or do Switch User in GNOME. Now the funniest part is, if I start X then close it and start it again, all is fine, I can start a second X simultaniously or do switch user without hanging. Help?

I checked it with vesa and open-source drivers and they both work fine, dont hang.

That did the trick. Thanks.

Unfortunately, Xvideo output from mplayer/xine is still corrupted (incorrect colors, weird lines, diagonal tearing.) And mythfrontend now crashes on launch. OpenGL video output from mplayer, however, is no longer tearing! All of the GL YUV conversion modes that used to work in 8.40 now cause mplayer to crash, though, requiring software conversion. Now to see if I can get mplayer to play 1920x1080 video with deinterlacing without pegging the CPU; I'm getting bad framedropping with the defaults even on a 2.4GHz C2D.

XvMC...someday...hopefully.

I've posted about this on the Ubuntu forums.

Basically, though, you can unpack the installer into another directory by doing:

./ati-driver-installer-8.42.3-x86.x86_64.run --extract name-of-directory

then extract the other archive that Michael linked to into the same directory (choosing to replace files)

then, Cd into that directory and type

sudo ./ati-installer.sh 8.42.3 --install

(or ./ati-installer.sh 8.42.3 --buildpkg Ubuntu/gusty
if you're following the Ubuntu wiki HOWTO)

Okay, I just verified that my problems can be solved by downgrading the kernel to 2.6.22.9. This change makes ut2k4 and fgl_glxgears work again, both were not working with kernel 2.6.23.1.

Okay, looks like I have basically the same problem with a 2.6.22.9 kernel so it is either xorg-server 1.4 or fglrx itself misbehaving with ut2k4. When using the older kernel the problems do only appear at bigger resolutions than before, with 2.6.23 everything > X x 800 did cause problems, not it is everything > X x 960. With this problem the game is unplayable at higher resolutions due to the whole bottom half being not visible clearly.

Beside this the driver really does work nicely in neverball and at smaller resolutions in ut2k4. Wine seems to work okay, too though I do not have any 3D games installed via wine, I can only test with CrazyMachines.

Well, so now it installs in Feisty 64 bit... but it seems to have broken Wine. Anything that tries to initialise 3d graphics seems to die - even playing Peggle Extreme from Steam now doesn't work (and it even segfaults doing it!).

Even 8.41.7 let me play Peggle!

This is strange.

serkan@zoidberg ~ $ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6958 Release

serkan@zoidberg ~ $ glxinfo | grep ATI
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600

serkan@zoidberg ~ $ glxinfo | grep GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap
GLX_ARB_multisample, GLX_EXT_import_context, GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap,
GLX_SGIX_visual_select_group, GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap

AIGLX is enabled. Composite is enabled. 3d is working. I get ~5000 on glxgears and ~1000 fgl_glrx and yet:

serkan@zoidberg ~ $ compiz --indirect-rendering --replace gconf
compiz (core) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

compiz does not work. This is on amd64 gentoo. Does anybody have any ideas?
