sidux 2007-04 released

While sidux is approaching its first birthday, we are proud to announce the immediate availability of the sidux 2007-04 "Ερως" release for amd64 and i686 systems, shipping in a ≈445 MB KDE lite and a ≈680 MB KDE full flavour.

sidux is a full featured Debian sid based live CD with a special focus on hard disk installations, a clean upgrade path within sid and additional hard- and software support. The ISO is completely based on Debian sid, enriched and stabilized with sidux' own packages and scripts.
Release notes for Ερως

Our fourth release concentrates on X.org 7.3/ xrandr 1.2 and X detection related changes and the new upstream kernel 2.6.23, combined with an updated mac80211 wlan stack and drivers, which brought support for a number of additional wlan cards. While the last two months have been pretty turbulent in Debian sid with X.org 7.3 entering the scene, several library transitions and infrastructural problems, these issues seem to be mostly resolved for sidux and now allow to provide the best possible opensource support for various graphics chipsets and advanced runtime configuration options provided by xrandr 1.2 compatible drivers.

Further efforts have been invested into an advanced USB installation, kernel stabilisation and the live persistency framework. Various updates, fixes and adaptions have been applied to basically the complete package list and a lot of translation and localisation related endeavours were started to improve the situation for our non english/ german speaking users.

It does not only use Kernel 2.6.23.9-rc1, but also is the first distribution to use the Xserver 1.4.1 that has a lot of bugfixes since Xorg 7.3 / Xserver 1.4 and enables EXA by default. Try out this wonderful distribution, you will not be disappointed!

sidux 2007-04.5 has been released

A lot has changed since sidux 2007-04 "Ερως" got released, most importantly additional hardware support for concurrent graphics-, DVB-, ALSA- and wireless LAN devices, which suggests to fresh up "Ερως", while continuing the development for sidux 2008-01 "Νυξ". Consequently we are now proud to announce the immediate availability of the sidux 2007-04.5 "Ερως" christmas special for amd64 and i686 systems, shipping in roughly ≈445 MB KDE lite flavours and a combined i386+amd64 release with ≈1430 MB KDE for kde-full.

Release notes for Ερως xmas

This update release of sidux 2007-04.5 "Ερως" concentrates on additional hardware support and stability improvements for wireless and DVB devices, combined with newly available hardware support for various ATi graphics cards in interaction with the new X.org 7.3/ xrandr 1.2 based X detection.

A new feature is the combined DVD ISO for kde-full, which supports i386 and amd64 architectures and avoids the hard size limit of CD-R media while trying to retain a slick package list. Further efforts have been invested into consolidating classical and advanced USB installation methods, kernel stabilisation and the live persistency framework. Various updates, fixes and adaptions have been applied to large parts of the package list.

As a special christmas present for our non english/ german speaking users, sidux 2007-04.5 "Ερως" ships an xdelta to add initial localisations for all currently supported languages.

If you're wondering what the part about newly avaible hardware support for ATi is about, it means that RadeonHD (v1.1.0, it's always the newest release) is now the default for R500 and R600 cards!

You guys should try sidux if you like your system light and powerful, configured for performance out of the box.

Since its rolling release, you usually always have the latest software - assuming that you remember to upgrade often.

Also sidux's solidity means that even if you use an older release you can upgrade to the latest and greatest with relative ease. There is a script called smxi which assists users with dist-upgrades and warns of potential problems, and it is very well maintained.

And the best maintained script is of course the ati driver install script.

Yeah, sidux is great, but smxi is not necessary, especially for fglrx related things, people should use the ATI Installer instead, and that's not because of my difficulties with h2 in the sidux' forums that I try to avoid starting this year :)
