View Full Version : Catalyst 7.12 slows down

The installation of Catalyst 7.2 has slowed my RV505 [Radeon X1550 64-bit] down significantly. glxgears gives me just 75.350 FPS (334 frames in 5.0 secs), and some programs, especially Firefox (extremely slow scrolling) and Gimp show bad response times. Catalyst 7.1 worked perfectly well, the xorg.conf is stillö the same.
My xorg.conf:

Quick questions :
1. You mention Catalyst 7.1 and 7.2 in your initial post -- do you mean 7.11 (November) and 7.12 (December) ?
2. I noticed your config file had :
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
... while the log indicates that XAA is being initialized; wonder if the combination is somehow resulting in software rendering and the slowdown you are seeing ?
Maybe try changing acceleration method to XAA ?

I mean Catalyst 7.12 (December). Sorry for the confusion.
I will remove EXA from the xorg.conf and see if there're any changes in the behaviour.

nope. that didn't change anything. Still as slow as before

accelmethod is not used as inidicated in the log (we can only see a part of the log which tells us about thw vgahw module load and about the textured video enabling). it seems that somehow fglrx enables the rendering which slows down your board. i haven't seen nothing wrong in your xorg.conf but i wasn't able to see all the log. i know that there are sites around that let you load files on them. try loading the log there and post a link or copy the entire file in a post here.
to try speeding up the rendering (should be activated by the extensions) add this to the device section:
Option "TexturedXrender" "true"
the following could break xorg and make it not start so if it doesn't start with the following option remove it.
Option "Texture2d" "true"
(it should speed up rendering) and
Option "RENDER" "true"
to the extensions sections.
now this makes me wonder if this could be motive why my board has stepped down to about 300fps after enabling the rendering. i thought that this was due to my chip being slow, but it may be that the driver does the rendering by software means and its speed would be limited to just 300fps. i'll try out some modifications in the xorg conf and let you know if the enabling of rendering was the cause of this slowdown.

i didn't know it is an igp board until now, but this doesn't matter much. i don't see nothing wrong in the log except for the driver not being able to read the monitor, but if it works then that's not a real problem. from what i've seen i seem to understand that you're using opensuse 10.2 with xorg 7.2 (server 1.3) and personal compiled kernel. is that correct?
well, it doesn't really matter much to tell the truth.
anyway, try setting to false the extensions and turn to off aiglx and then comment out all the options in the device sections and restart xorg. see then if the driver reloads the rendering and if the gears have gone down again.

Almost correct: the OS is OpenSuse 10.3.
I have set all the extensions to false and have then commented out all the options in the device section. the gears are still down. re-activating the extensions and the different options one by one doesn't really change anything either. I am really lost here. Funny thing is, that Catalyst 7.11 worked almost flawlessly.

well, i think that this is the time to get back to 7.11. if something works fine without great problems while after the upgrade has problems, then return to the old driver. you're not obliged to use the newest one. stick with 7.11 until 8.1 is out. maybe there was something wrong in the rendering of the 7.12 and thus, the fps got down. or maybe it's some issue with the igps. from the log it seems that everything works fine, so this is something inside the driver. i'm sorry for not being able to help you more on the matter.

DUDE! i ran into the same problem... well i just rememered that i had changed a setting in the CCC. Maybe you did too or had before and the new driver doesn't like that setting.
Anyways, check out your ati CCC and under more settings you will see wait for vertical refresh. i changed mine to back to OFF unless application specifies. Im not having those errors show up in my dmesg anymore and my fps has gone back to normal.

You're genius! I had done the same, have now changed the setting for vertical refresh back to OFF and - hey presto - everything works as it should do. Thanks! :)

You'll find it in: 3d --> more settings --> Wait for vertical refresh.

There's still something odd going on. I experience occasional freezes. They don't last long, mostly hardly longer than a split second, but still noticeable.
dmesg shows this error for these events:
[fglrx:firegl_free_mutex] *ERROR* mutex id 0x0000001f not found in mutex list
[fglrx:firegl_free_mutex] *ERROR* mutex id 0x0000001d not found in mutex list

[fglrx:firegl_free_mutex] *ERROR* mutex id 0x00000021 not found in mutex list
[fglrx:firegl_free_mutex] *ERROR* mutex id 0x00000022 not found in mutex list
Any clue someone?
