I've tried installing the new ATI 8.3 drivers but without success. The previous drivers worked installing without any problems directly with the "ATI-method" from the downloaded file. I did uninstall these drivers with fglrx-uninstall.sh file in the /usr/share/ati folder.

Is it safe to delete the folder:
/usr/src/modules/fglrx
and then installing the new drivers?

I hope this will solve the problems I have.

Edit: I've fixed my problem by typing in the terminal: "sudo aticonfig --max-gart-size 512"
My graphics have 512MB ram.

I found the solution by searching for "(EE) fglrx(0): atiddxDriScreenInit failed, GPS not been initialized." which was an error I had in the "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" file.

Anyway, still my previous question is intersting. Is it safe to delete the folder stated when you are ready to install the new drivers?

You can savely delete the whole /usr/src/modules folder, it is used by module-assistant and will be recreated when used.
