I purchased a HIS X1650Pro 512MB DDR2 AGP card to replace my "old" GeForce FX5600 AGP 256MB card. Let me just start by saying how disappointed I am, so disappointed and disbelief. I'm running a dual boot Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10) and Windows XP system.
System info
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2700+ (2.16Ghz)
Memory: 1.5GB PC400 (333Mhz) CL2.5
Motherboard: Asus A7V8X-X (VIA 400 chipset)
Let me start off with the comparison on Linux.

1. ATI vs. NVIDIA driver
So I got both cards to run with updated drivers from NVIDIA and ATI respectively. ATI was a pain in the butt and I finally got it to work with a clean install as the old one kept on failing one way or the other. Was able to remove ATI and then install NVIDIA without any trouble at all.
Verdict: No contest.
2. glxgears
ATI got me 2800FPS (with direct rendering)
2400FPS (without direct rendering)
NVIDIA FX5600 2000FPS (with direct rendering)
What's interesting here is even with direct rendering the ATI drivers actually can't keep the gears in the box. When I move the window the gear stays behind and then gets udpated when the window stops. With NVIDIA it moves when window is dragged.
3. Ubuntu-compiz
ATI X1650Pro runs my compiz 3D Cube very sluggishly. It is claims to use direct rendering (AIGLX) but somehow it doesn't look like it. When I run compiz it felt like glitches here and there. Firefox scrolling looked terrible. Blocks of text jumps when I scroll up and down.
NVIDIA FX5600 runs desktop effects compiz firefox perfectly and quite smooth I might add.
4. Windows XP
With ATI card Windows doesnt feel smooth. NVIDIA is picture perfect. Smooth, fast response, etc.
Can anybody tell me why is NVIDIA older generation card better than ATI ?? Except for the 3D performance my new ATI card has nothing to impress about.
After playing games for a while ATI card starts to blink my screen and crashes, so all this 3D stuff doesn't do me much if it cant run for long.
Upon careful consideration, I repackaged my X1650 Pro and sent it back for a refund.
Can someone tell me I must have mis-installed my ATI card somehow? I refuse to believe this is happening.
Thanks!
