Phoronix: AMD Catalyst 8.4 Linux Driver
In the last quarter of 2007 AMD was on a spree with their proprietary Linux driver as they introduced their new OpenGL driver, which brought major performance improvements, and that was followed by AIGLX support. This year, however, their Catalyst Linux driver activity has been relatively quiet for end-users. Since switching over to this much-improved code-base, they have been able to deliver same-month product support for their new graphics processors such as the Radeon HD 3650, 3850/3870, and the 780G-based IGP, which once couldn't be said for this company that had taken them a half-year to deliver support for the Radeon X1000 (R500) and Radeon HD 2000 (R600) product families. Today the Catalyst 8.4 Linux driver has been released, and like the 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3 drivers, this month's update comes with minimal changes.

Thought so, too, the ATI driver download page hasn't been updated, yet, so here we go:

So essentially this release is a obscure bug fix release. However, given the mention of the new library, I would assume that attention is being focused on Catalyst 8.5 hence the lack of activity on this driver update. Mind you, I don't have any issues with the current fglrx (3D, Video, etc all work well enough for use) hence why I'm impartial.
[One wonders why they bother with 8.4 then, but they need to keep consistency here I suppose]
Driver notes: https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/catalyst_84_linux.html
But...if there's a new library involved, I would expect new features. Furthermore, if it is in Beta stage already we might expect to have the 8.5 driver out early in May.

With Catalyst 8.4+, aticonfig will no longer crash on newer Linux distributions where there is no device section within the xorg.conf configuration file.i'm getting a deja vu reading this part.
wasn't there a very similar fix few releases before?

Crossfire? Hmm.. Could be, I don't know how they would get crossfire in though, they can't even get DualHead to work properly. I can't imagine what would happen if they enabled crossfire in their drivers at this point in time, I smell disaster. That theory alone has just given me about 10 new names for the next ATI driver.
Hopes never die
No, hopes don't ever die for crossfire, but the driver might literally die if they put that in. I don't think it could handle it right now.

I havnt used linux on this pc for ages lol.
I am waiting for Crossfire support.
2X 3870X2 would mean, 3x doing nothing.
Anyways i got some other linux boxes, Anyways, X850 XT PE running Open source driver, no major issues.
1800 GTO Running FGLRX, Minor issues, annoying.
And 1950 XTX, Install issues, X.ORG edit, Corrected Working like 1800 GTO.
thats my story.
my fav must be my x850 PC, it runs nicely, 4.5K fps gears. Yes i have bios modded it, clocked slightly higher volt modded and new cooling, so i got abit high FPS for the card running open source driver.
Anyways, IF amd goes on with supporting videocards themself( SPEED UP PLZ) and give documents i think amd will sell some more videocards and we actually got a amd favored marked share in linux, and tell nvidia Release documents.

Alright here are my results from this driver, things I tested:
- Savage 2 invisible player model bug is still there
- Glest lockup still exists
- I gained 1 fps average in the Phoronix Test Suite Nexuiz benchmark.
- Tested a couple of avi's and one .mov in VLC and they worked fine.
All in all, its pretty much the same driver as last month minus the little bug fixes they tossed in. At least I don't play Savage 2 or Glest regularly, I mainly use them just for testing purposes with the driver.. But they do need to be fixed.
Its not a bad driver though, it is improving. If anyone stumbles upon something that wasn't noted in the release notes that was fixed be sure to let us in on it.

I am using Ubuntu Gutsy and 8.1 Catalyst

I'm really disappointed that the video playback on the second head in dual head mode still isn't fixed. I just checked in which driver version this known issue first came up and this is now almost a year ago (April 18th 2007)!
I still can't change to the new driver releases because I can't watch movies on my tv. Lets hope 8.5 indeed will bring new major improvements because I'm very disappointed... almost all hope is gone now that the Ati linux drivers will ever reach a level near to the nvidia drivers.

There are two main bugs that are still impacting me. One of these is still unfixed in 8.4, and the other is [I]slightly improved.

This crash dumped me back at a console, and trying to switch consoles after that seemed to lock me in an endless "oops" cycle. But unfortunately, it was all scrolling far too fast for me to actually read any of it.
b) I still cannot play World of Warcraft full-screen at 1680x1050. (Wine 0.9.58, OpenGL mode.) However, with fglrx 8.4 at least WoW doesn't lock up the entire laptop immediately at the login screen any more. Now it completely locks up after a few seconds actual play instead. I suppose that this is progress, of a sort...

I started with a default xorg vesa config and deleted /etc/ati before the install.
I can't use compiz fusion with the fglrx generated device section, I need to add -
Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
or there is no rendering in xterm. I recall from another thread that this was considered an old workaround no longer needed.
Using xorg 7.2 and fusion from git 11th March.
Ok here are my feedback for this brand new driver with an HD2600 PRO AGP!!!
OS Mandriva Linux 2008.1 "spring"
P4 2.8E @ 3.3
1 Gig of dual PC4000 ddr ram in dual channel running at ddr 472
Everything look good when I use my good old Radeon 9800 Pro
Like the last release the driver work partially for the HD2600 Pro AGP.
Compiz OK
Video OK
everything 2D OK
But......
In Doom3 at ultra quality and at resolution of 1024/768/ the time demo give an average of 15.3 fps
at Low Quality at a resolution of 640/480 the time demo give me an average of 17.6 fps. At that setting my good old Radeon 9800 pro give me 72 fps with the same driver!!!! (Something is very wrong here)
I have also played urban terror and the game is unplayable!!!
There is something in this driver preventing those type of card (HD2XXX AGP) from reaching there full potential.
I hope someone at AMD will take the time to look at this tread.
For now and since I bought this card (In january) it is going back in it's box, until I find someone to buy it or that a GOOD Linux driver come from AMD!!!

Here is my experience with this driver (disappointed face):
Machine Specs:
Intel Pentium D 805 @ 2.66 Ghz.
Intel D101GGC Mother Board
1 Gig RAM
Integrated X200 (256 Mb Memory Allocated in BIOS)
Genius SoundMaker Value 5.1 SoundCard
OS: Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon
Tested XVideo video output with Option "VideoOverlay" "on" in xorg.conf:
The scrambling screen bug continues to happen, and noticeable tearing is happening in the upper section of the video playback area.
Tested Xvideo output with Options "TexturedVideo" and "TexturedVideoSync" both on in xorg.conf:
No scrambling, but horizontal and vertical movements leave shades and movement seems unnatural.
Tested OpenGL output:
No OpenGL output video playback is possible with VLC. With Xine and MPlayer video playback is possible, but tearing is noticeable in the upper section of the video playback area, even with VSync activated from CCCLE.
Opinions:
IMHO, this driver release shouldn't be. No important bug fixes this time, and more important, no new bugs inserted into known issues area. in my opinion AMD developers should focus in fixing these small things before going into more complicated stuff ( Example: Crossfire support), because these simple things are more important to the average linux user than other stuff.

md5 summ 8.3 = md5 summ 8.4
Why?
diff -u 8-3/common/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/firegl_public.h 8-4/common/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/firegl_public.h
-> absolutely no added hardware for 8-4. the internal version only jumped from 8.471 to 8.476. Unbeleaveable that they needed 5 weeks for that update with bugfixes most people with ever notice. And it does not even run with every (mobile) GPU, will do an update for the PTS image later to make testing more easy. (live fglrx to autoinstall - otherwise radeonhd is used for newer cards).

Has anyone tried dynamic dual-head setup with the new driver using Xrandr?
The aticonfig solution with pairmode and so on doesn't work for me. At least I can't get it set up in a way that I can switch dynamically between my laptop screen and two attached monitors (1680x1050+1280x1024).
Thus I'm forced to use radeonHD which does Xrandr quite nicely, but has other issues.

I just want to suspend/resume my bloody Lenovo laptop, which will be replaced in a year. Yes, I can suspend/resume two or three times successfully with fglrx 8.4, but any tries after that is nothing more than a coin toss. Often it will only be a black screen on resume. Also, 3D is slower after a resume (http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1045), about -100 FPS in fgl_glxgears. Really, I hope the new open source drivers will rock, when they get another 6-12 months of development time behind them.
I have another laptop that is nvidia-based, and the nvidia drivers suck too ! VCs broken, no suspend, runs really hot (yes, the driver is completely updated). So it's not just fglrx that has problems. And a third laptop has an Intel integrated GPU, and it runs really FLAWLESSLY, suspend, Compiz and everything. My next laptop will most likely be completely Intel-based, currently the only sensible choice for a non-gaming Linux-machine. Hardware is worthless (to end user) without a good piece of software driving it.

Hi, I use fglrx with exactly the same setup (1680x1050 + an external monitor on 1280x1024). Works fine with fglrx 8.4. I use a combination of aticonfig --enable-monitor + xrandr to dynamically set it up.

Oh how I would have loved to get a completely Intel-based machine, but back then Lenovo wouldn't sell the T60 with more than 1024x768 and Intel graphics. Now I have 1400x1050, an x1300 inside, and my Atheros wifi card is also only partly supported. Apart from these two components, I'm totally happy with my T60.

Reading articles like this is bittersweet. I love that there is such coverage but I don't have any point of reference. Installing the AMD driver manually has been a shite in the past. However I've used the Ubuntu "Restricted Driver" quite well the last time I installed with 7.10
I'm struggling to make my point ...
Could you please make a note or two about how new AMD driver releases like this one relate to those in existing distribution use?
Does x distro update their repository driver packages with new releases that mirror those of AMD's public releases?
If so, how long does it normally take?
In Ubuntu specifically, how do I determine what the current "Restricted Driver" I am running actually is?
Are the version numbers similar between the Ubuntu package numbering and the AMD numbering?
Lastly, on a completely different note, can we all stop calling them ATi when clearly they are AMD? :)

To know which driver you are using "fglrxinfo" in command line should do the trick
Result :
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI MOBILITY RADEON X700
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6473 (8.37.6)
As for me I am still using 8.37.6 waiting for good dual-desktop support by the new driver base :'(

DRI2 is brand new and really exists only as a prototype today, albeit a prototype which is running in the master code to stay current.
Kristian Hogsberg just finished (~45 minutes ago) a presentation on DRI2 at XDC. He gave a nice talk and demo, showing video and glxgears running on a spinning cube, which looked great and ran for at least a minute before the screen turned grey and froze.
It seems like the API is starting to stabilize and nothing was thrown during Kristian's talk, so things are looking good.

I just want to say that the new driver is nearly perfect with ubuntu hardy and ati mobility x1800. Suspend and Hibernation is working. The performance is great with compiz fusion. No slow scrolling anymore. For now i only use metacity composite manager without compiz fusion. I can play games with high fps and no problems with video too. No crash anymore.
If i want use compiz, i just turn desktop effects on. The only bug is still flickering with xv video on my machine.
if i'm not wrong... you should use textured video with such gpu... but look in the catalyst 8.3 thread, when bridgman spoke about it if you want to be sure.

bridgman, looking good. We're able to resume direct ATI fglrx install with 8-4 in our installer scripts, no hacks, using Debian Sid create deb then install it, installer option. Since no hacks to run installer was my core requirement, that requirement is met, so no reason to not again offer current fglrx direct from ATI instead of via Debian sid packages.
Initial user reports positive. Hopefully we won't lose fglrx with 2.6.25, we'll see how that goes.
if i'm not wrong... you should use textured video with such gpu... but look in the catalyst 8.3 thread, when bridgman spoke about it if you want to be sure.
I have already Option "TexturedVideo" "on". It doesn't help anyway. I guess maybe it's a compiz bug or ati doesn't fix this flickering on x1800 gpu.
If anyone have compiz (ubuntu hardy) without flickering and xv on ati x1800, please let me know the settings.
But for now i don't really need compiz as default desktop effects. Metacity with composite looks great.
This version is much stable than the versions before.

For users having this problem:
dpkg-divert: `diversion of /usr/X11R6/lib32/libGL.so.1 to /usr/X11R6/lib32/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa by xorg-driver-fglrx' clashes with `diversion of /usr/X11R6/lib32/libGL.so.1.2 to /usr/X11R6/lib32/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa by xorg-driver-fglrx'
This is what you have to do:
I had to modify driver.preinst and driver.postrm and fix those dpkg-diverts. For you, they should be under packages/Ubuntu/dists/gutsy. Find the lines where there is a divertion from libGL.so.1 to libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa (should be around line 71 and 74 for driver.preinst and 28, 32 for driver.postrm) and modify it to libGL.so.1.xlibmesa then rebuild the packages.
Thanks c0un7d0wn
The New driver experience:
I am updating from 8.1 and I like it very very much. I love the work done on the video playback. No blockiness and no tearing and correct colors and no ghosting(on some videos with the previous drivers). Thank you very much.
The packaging scripts:
Up until 8.1 worked perfectly. For newer versions you should take into account that people are updating from older ones, so you need to do some clean up work before the 'real' installation.
Thank you.
EDIT: With this fix compiz doesn't work for me. I don't really care since I have correct video playback.

Suspend still doesn't work with Compiz (leaves the screen dark with a blinking cursor) on this Mobility Radeon X300 (Dell Inspiron 6000). It's been many months now. That's really all I expect from AMD in the short term, and transition to DRI2 in the long term.
Compiz + games doesn't work well. If you haven't already try without it. I don't know how exactly to do it with distros, but I wouldn't consider playing games with compiz running.
I didn't test the gaming part with compiz.

It looks like the package maintainer did a copy and paste but forgot to change the filename for the new line. So the Debian package is trying to divert two different files into same place. Here's how to patch it, remember to substitute Ubuntu/gutsy with whatever version that you're using.
$ ./ati-driver-installer-8-4-x86.x86_64.run --extract ati-driver
$ cd ati-driver
Edit packages/Ubuntu/dists/gutsy/driver.preinst
Look for the these two lines
dpkg-divert --add --rename --package $PKGNAME --divert /usr/X11R6/lib32/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa /usr/X11R6/lib32/libGL.so.1 > /dev/null
and
dpkg-divert --add --rename --package $PKGNAME --divert /usr/lib32/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1 > /dev/null
and change libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa to libGL.so.1.xlibmesa
Then run
$ ./ati-packager-wrapper.sh Ubuntu/gutsy
and it'll build the .deb packages as usual in the parent directory. It's also safe to delete the ati-driver directory after you're done. Thank heavens I used to maintain packages for Debian otherwise I'd never have figured out how to do all of this.

Ubuntu 7.10 had (at best) the fglrx driver from September of last year in the repos, and they never updated it through the whole 7.10 cycle. That version of the driver was very problematic with certain functions compared to the current release, which has had monthly development improvements since... including a change in versioning style (7.12, 8.1, 8.2, etc) to match the Windows releases. Xv playback wasn't even supported for the newer cards in the repo driver.
Ubuntu 8.04 currently has fglrx 8.3 in the repos, though it doesn't include the full Catalyst packages. The repo driver works fine but if you want to stay current with the ATI driver releases (and use the full Catalyst control panel), you shouldn't count on the Ubuntu devs to package them for you. You'd be holding your breath until next October, because they don't like to update ("backport") drivers to add features... they usually only backport to fix serious bugs.
So... you have to compile your own. Using the ATI script is easy and pretty foolproof if you follow the directions at http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu
I hope this helps! Best of luck to you.

I just installed Ubuntu 8.04. While suspend with compiz didn't work at all on Ubuntu 7.10, it seems to work just fine on Ubuntu 8.04. I'm a much happier camper now.
I'm not happy with the actual version or the version before that. I have artifacts in every console. E.g. if i move the cursor in a text file, all chars around the cursor get corrupted and the only way to make them readable again is to scroll or reload the file! So I'm stuck at 8.02

Until just recently, I was running Catalyst 8.3 with a Sapphire Radion 9550 AGP card, on a Fedora 8 x86-64 system. First I installed the Catalyst 8.4 driver, which still worked fine with the 9550. Then I sawpped out that card for the Sapphire X1950 Pro 512MB AGP, and that worked fine too. I didn't change any configuration, and I don't have anything special in the xorg.conf, which can be seen below.
I have not tried Compiz or any of the other compositing stuff that people seem to routinely have trouble with. I've run a few games, though, and it seems to work fine.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 and didn't like this driver. When I restart X after installing it I had no 3D support, and a reboot later I got black screen of death.
I read in the unofficial wiki that you can fix it by changing the memory from dedicated to shared, but I'm on a X200M and can't reduce the shared memory because my BIOS don't let that.

I suppose that this is progress, of a sort...
I had the same problem – running Ubuntu Hardy on the same hardware. I solved it by adding the “virtual” workaround which was needed for 8-2 to get OpenGL working.
Try adding
virtual 1728 1088
to your xorg.conf. It might work…

Hello everybody i have an ATI RADEON HD2600 PRO AGP.
And it's working perfectely with compiz!!.
Here's how i did it maybe it works for you too:
Download the latest driver from ATI (http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html)
in terminal:
sudo apt-get update
(install driver)
sudo sh ./ati-driver-installer-8-5-x86_64.run
sudo aticonfig --initial
sudo aticonfig -overlay-type=Xv
Then Reboot!
And that's it. Now you can go to ATI CAtalyst.
And one thing, this didn't work when i started ubuntu whith the 2...17 kernel, it only worked with 2....16 kernel.
Before it worked on my ubuntu, i had a lot of drivers and things in my pc, so i reinstalled ubuntu, and then i tried and worked.
Hope this works to all of you too.
Here's what it shows me when i do "fglrxinfo":
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro AGP
OpenGL version string: 2.1.7537 Release
