It's been a while since nvidia last updated their (stable) driver, February 26 to be excact, are there any statistics as to how often they use to update?

Next week will probably be a new NVIDIA release. Since February though they have had two beta releases.

I got word that there will be a new non beta release before the end of the month.

I hope it fixes the woeful 2D performance, but I doubt it.

We are aware that many Linux users are having performance problems with 2D rendering on the GeForce 8 and 9 series. A good user experience is very important to us, and we have several X performance improvements in development that will help KDE 4, Compiz, and GTK+ performance on these GPUs. Some of these improvements will be available in the short term, while others are longer-term architectural improvements.

I wonder what nvidia means by long term and short term? Short term months and long term years?

And what fixes are in the short term for us to get excited about...
"Long term" is something to look forward to while "short term" is something to get excited about :D

I wonder if they're going to make any headway in the "long term" with video acceleration. It's either that or 2D that makes watching a video and dragging a window horrible. Video jumps back and forth a couple of frames and the window drag lags

Well...Michael's estimate of a new driver within the next week has gone down the plug hole. Now it's your turn deanjo!

You guys in this thread sound like you know what the hell you are doing and I do not. I have been working for two days trying to get an 9600GT nvidia card running in Ubuntu and have had no luck. I run the 173 driver install from nvidia and it just gets rejected by the OS and I get kicked back to 800x600. I have no clue (the two days spent fussing with this problem is about 2 hours less than how long I've been using Linux)
Any clues from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

I'm using the beta driver w/9600GT. You need to generate a new XOrg conf using nvidia-xconfig
You then need to remove nvidia-kernel-common i believe. check synaptic and search for nvidia kernel in the names, and completely remove all that are installed. then the beta blob will work after reboot.

Thanks for the reply and sorry for hijaking the thread.
Do you know the location of nvidia-kernel-common?

either search for it or in the terminal
sudo apt-get purge nvidia-kernel-common

Got it, it's in the Synaptic. So uninstall all?

Ah, forget it. I give up. Back to XP pro, it recognizes the card and my monitor automatically. It's a waiste to have a 37" monitor running at 800x600. I don't see how Linux expects to make any head way in the desktop game with such cryptic or high learning curve just to get things running.

On my system none of those are installed, so if they are installed on your system, remove them.

Heh, I'm just going what I got from nvidia when I inquired about official 8100/8200/8300 support. Also traditionally nvidia has put out an updated official driver near opensuse release dates.

Thanks for the help but I think I am to much of a newb. Short of a HOWTO, I am totally lost. I do appreciate your effort though. Maybe if I come back in a few months, it'll be in the basic set of drivers.

TBH, windows doesn't detect it automagically, you still have to install the drivers yourself. I've heard talk that something in Ubuntu (X server maybe) has trouble detecting wide screen resolutions.
Once you've got nvidia drivers you install nvidia-settings and then use that to set your resolution.
Ubuntu does not write any res in the xorg.conf, so Xorg has to detect it automatically. In most cases it works, but some monitors have "funny" EDID data, like those which are optimized for standard hd tv timinigs - via hdmi. Therefore you often have got 1920x1080i/p support when the display is only 1680x1050 native. This way the res is suboptimal in autodetect mode of course and you have to force the correct one.

I had quite the same problem... Is your display connected on DVI?
If it is, try with a regular VGA cable...
The recent updates, either from nVidia or Xorg, screwed up the EDID data recovery when it's connected with DVI. I've entered lots of bugs about that and few people had the same problem. I hope it'll be fixed one day.

New drivers spotted on the Cuda download page (for RHEL at least). (174.55)

It doesn't compile on my machine, running a 2.6.25.3 kernel.

Gonna give it a go, but I doubt it'll work or if there'll be performance gains, not much of a number increase. 173->174
