Phoronix: RadeonSI Now Offers NIR Shader Cache Support

Earlier this month Valve Linux GPU driver developer Timothy Arceri landed NIR shader caching support within the Gallium3D Mesa state tracker as an alternative to the existing TGSI IR caching support. Arceri has now worked through implementing this NIR cache support for the RadeonSI driver...

Somewhere in these types of articles there needs to be a summary sentence or two as to why someone would care. I mean, as a games, should I care? How about a normal non-gaming user? Media server applications?

I would think working towards supporting latest version of opengl (4.6) would be the best "in a nutshell" summary AFAIK.

Michael mentioned SPIR-V ingestion, but that might just be just jargon to most people.

NIR support in mesa is the easiest way to support SPIR-V ingestion -> SPIR-V ingestion is required for opengl 4.6 -> NIR needs to be at par with existing IR (TGSI), which I guess would include this shader cache

Do you need openGL 4.6 for non-gaming? Probably not. Do any games require openGL 4.6 yet? Probably not.

Thank you for the concise answer! Multiple people in my home game, and I run an RX 480 / FX-8370 set-up, so I try to stay informed somewhat regarding the AMD open source drivers.
