Phoronix: CRYENGINE's Sandbox Editor Now Open-Source

Crytek last year announced they would release the source code to their Sandbox editor; that goal has now been realized...

The code is open for viewing sure, but nothing about it is "open source". They use their own license, with plenty of legal junk.

+ Please note: from March 20th 2018, the new CRYENGINE business model is in effect. + That means 5% royalties apply to projects developed and published on CRYENGINE 5.0 and beyond. + Check our new FAQ.md for all facts and exemptions.
"Open source" more like "LOOK WE DONT DO ANYTHING BAD; PROMISE!! now buy our shit"

Or use Lumberyard for free, and avoid getting sued! just a thought.

Not sure why you thought open-source meant anything else. Just because something is open-source doesn't mean it also has free licensing either. Frankly, I'd prefer this over just providing binary blobs like most do.

The term "open source" has an official definition: The OSI's Open Source Definition.

            1. Free Redistribution

The license shall not restrict any party from selling or giving away the software as a component of an aggregate software distribution containing programs from several different sources. The license shall not require a royalty or other fee for such sale.
The general term for things like this which have the source available but don't qualify to be called "open source" is shared source.

(It's like how Linux is Unix-like or Unixy, because "UNIX" is a certification mark and Linux updates too frequently to make certification feasible.)

See this version of OSI's website in 2002, which under the "Conformance to the OSD" section encourages the use of the term "open source" for projects compatible with their open source definition, but notes that the term shouldn't be taken as to mean conformance to the OSD.

Try telling Cloud Imperium Games (makers of Star Citizen) that. They switched from CryEngine 3.8 to Lumberyard (based on CryEngine 3.8) and Crytek sued them for it (case ongoing).

I hate the open source definition by the OSI.

General use of the word meand as source available. The OSI has taken that meaning and hitched on "free source" declaring themselves as the authority to define it like the FSF going evangelical on everyones asses.
