      It sounds to me that it's just exposing capabilities of the underlying device hardware (such as face detection) for use by the web page.

      If you want to solve those, I think you didn't need this - you could just write a chrome plug-in. Maybe use a compute shader written in WebGL to accelerate it, or just forward the image to a GPU in the cloud.
