There is Intel support in place for Baytrail, Cherrytrail, Broadwell, Apollolake, Cannonlake, and Braswell DSP hardware with this current kernel code.

So, just Intel's mobile/tablet SoC codenames? Why so? Is it a "first step", or do these SoCs use different sound hardware from the more regular desktop/laptop chipsets so that the whole SOF project is not applicable to the latter?

Open source firmware is something our community needs more of. AMD should follow Intel's example here.
