Phoronix: MIR JIT Aiming For First Release Later This Year By Red Hat Developer

Vladimir Makarov of Red Hat spoke at this week's Linux Plumbers Conference during the GNU Tools Track on lightweight JIT compilers and the effectiveness (or not) of GCC's JIT implementation as well as LLVM's JIT in the context of just-in-time support for Ruby. But following those shortcomings with GCC/LLVM JIT, he's been working on MIR as a lightweight JIT compiler...

I for one think Ruby is underrated (and I'm probably in the minority), so this is great news!

vladpetric I - as well - think that Ruby is underrated! In my view, there are two things holding Ruby back; the performance and the notion of "Ruby is for web"[in the same sense as PHP is].

you see? it's impossible to make slow language fast by bolting jit on top, because jit which generates fast code is unbearably slow

"It's called, Medium Internal Representation, or MIR"

"Great. That shouldn't confuse anyone. I'm working my Java IDE for Terminals. I call it JIT."

How many "MIR"s do we have now?

            Rust's MIR, mid-level IR
            Ubuntu/Canonical 's MIR
            Red-hat's MIR

I know there is 4th one, but can't remember right now

I think there is a "In Soviet Russia" MIR joke there somewhere
