Phoronix: Coreboot 4.17 Brings New Motherboards, AMD PSB, Doom Game Ported To Run As A Payload

Coreboot developers are releasing Coreboot 4.17 today with various new motherboards supported, support for GRUB2 atop SeaBIOS as a payload, and various low-level code improvements too. Plus Coreboot 4.17 brings the "coreDOOM" payload -- yes, it's possible to get the game Doom running atop this system firmware. There is also AMD Platform Secure Boot (PSB) support introduced to Coreboot too...

What's the point in running DOOM on top of coreboot besides being a nice showcase?

Because if they didn't do it, someone would have asked "Will it run Doom?". And you definitely don't want to answer this question with "no" when even oscilloscopes run it.

Essentially it is a showcase of what is possible with payload. Probably not usefull by itself but it proofs a point and is fairly easy to do.

Meh. "Does it run Doom?" is so 2000. We now ask if it runs Crysis.

So when are they gonna add a "motherboard database" section to their site, like DD-WRT's router database? Their site is possible candidate for "most uninformative website" for sure.

I meant to port Wolfenstein at some point but I've been procrastinating for more than a year :'(

They have one on their wiki, though the wiki is in unmaintained limbo. https://coreboot.org/status/board-status.html

The docs website was supposed to replace it, but few people have taken the time to move the information over or write guides for it. https://doc.coreboot.org/
