It would be great if companies like Asus would just hire the open source developers involved in passion projects that are reverse engineering everything for their hardware. Paying 1-3 devs ~$200k USD per year and having first class Linux support wouldn't be terrible ROI, even considering how tiny the audience would be. I just returned an Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition, but the work Luke Jones is doing on asusctl is great.

this kind of issue is annoying. you don't know if linux is working on it until you try it and then you have to return it. the annoying part is that most of the time is hard to find a review about new laptops and linux.

Now that you mention it, it's pretty strange that they don't Hell one of the key benefits would be the ability to sell laptops without windows on 'em. Sure, they can always sell them with freedos but that's not really a functioning pc, with proper linux support they can just ship it with ubuntu or some shit, and shave like 100-200$ off the laptop's price while at it.

Maybe even take it further, partner with valve, ship with some version or other of steamos. Why... doesn't valve make laptops? they've made VR Headsets and Controllers, and gaming consoles, why not laptops too?

You're confusing the "street price" of Windows with what MS actually charges OEMs, which is around the $5-10 mark. That's a very small price to pay for being able to ship a $2000 laptop that will do everything your customers want it to and be familiar to them.

It's a blatant abuse of monopoly power, of course, but since MS has more than enough money to buy a few politicians it's continued to be the way things work for decades now, and will continue to be so forever.
