I recently got some legit PDF from my bank that read something like "If you still see this, download Adobe Acrobat". It was a PDF 1.7. I wonder what feature my viewer didn't support. Firefox integrated PDF reader didn't work and I think I also tried evince. The Windows 10 integrated reader (Edge based) didn't work as well. Foxit (Windows) could display it. I wonder if the Libreoffice exported 1.7 PDFs will be 100% compatible with usual viewers...

Why is your bank using PDF 1.7 and not PDF/A variants?

Yeah, that new LibreOffice default PDF 1.7 exporting could cause some problems, I don't know if that's a great idea. I'm assuming it can be changed back to PDF/A quite easily.

Because he uses the Adobe PDF printer from word and has no idea what PDF/A is. I told him via Mail, he resent as 1.7. Then I wrote him some more... I didn't get another PDF from him since...

I just tried a simple document exported to 1.7 with Libreoffice and could open it no-problems. I'm really interested in what feature they used that my reader didn't support...

Regarding the PDF v discussion: One can select PDF /A in the dialog. The default though was 1.6 - which was now updated to 1.7 (from 2006… ISO 2008).
PDF/A has a few restrictions and isn't a good default choice imho. Does ist make an export eligible for long term storage? Yes. Is storing long term - and sacrificing features plus having definitely large files - a good default choice? No.

One thing i dont get, acrobat exist in MacOS, iOS and android, yet not on linux.

Besides being bribed dicks, what would be a technical reason for them to do not release a new version?

Pdf 1.7 provides the best features for demanding financial use. Only poor thieves running pirate OSes like Linux or BSD still rely on subpar legacy "pdf viewers" not capable of rendering long term accessible pdf 1.7.

It exists on Linux too, however, the last version is a decade old by now: https://helpx.adobe.com/en/security/...der-linux.html

There is an online version, tho. Maybe that'll work?

(it technically says “editor”, but you can use it for reading too)
