    So... it's intended to be like VRML, but as a C API instead of a file format, and with support for modern stuff like PBR?

      I can't fully tell if this is intended to complement or compete with the AOUSD announcement from yesterday, but it looks like this could aim to be the in-memory model standard and AOUSD is aiming to be the persistence standard.
      The Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD) is an open, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the interoperability of 3D content through OpenUSD (Universal Scene Description).

          As far as I understand it, it lacks transformation nodes. So, it is oriented rather to static scenes, raytracing, etc.. Support of real-time dynamic scenes seems to be no priority to the involved parties.

          Anyway, good to have one API for all this raytracing and static scene visualizations.

            For a quick 3D viz where Vulkan is too low-level this makes quite some sense; there is vtk but it is huge and painful sometimes, whereas OpenGL is a tech from the past... Running on a CPU is a huge thing for HPC, where things often run on computers without (useable) GPU.
