Phoronix: WayVNC 0.8 Preparing Transient Seats, Automatic Server-Side Resizing & Detached Mode

WayVNC v0.8 is working its way toward release as a VNC server for wlroots-based Wayland compositors like Sway. WayVNC continues to make it quite easy to have VNC support for Wayland desktops employing wlroots and this next release brings even more features...

Why does it care about wlroots??! Is there a protocol being used that is unofficial and only implemented by wlroots or what?

      Based on the readme:
This is a VNC server for wlroots-based Wayland compositors (:no_entry: Gnome, KDE and Weston are not supported).
My understanding is "We only test against wl-roots. Other compositors: Might work, might not"

Mostly because there is actually nothing official about any wayland protocol... its a train wreck of hodgepodge of loosely baked together protocols that are only partially implemented in each client in some sort of Salvador Dali / Ven Diagram abomination.

This is incorrect. The readme at https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayla...ref_type=heads does a good job of explaining the lifecycle of a "non-core" wayland protocol, which when it reaches stable is just as official as anything else.

KDE and Gnome already have their own built in features to provide VNC remote capabilities on Wayland.

Well this was only merged one month ago https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/merge_requests/180

This is to support a feature to appear in GNOME 46/Fedora 40, where you don't have to be logged into the computer prior to trying to RDP into it. The GNOME VNC/RDP remote capabilities have been in place for quite a while, ref. https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/Mutter/RemoteDesktop.

this is not Wayland, this is what X11 became after decades of "upgrades".

It seems you're expecting too much from amoeba.
