Any idea if this also works with Wayland?

        Yes, it does.
There is even a video in the merge request that is titled "wayland_remote_connection"

Nice! The overall experience and performance of RDP on Windows is much nicer than vnc / x2go / nomachine / etc. on Linux. It's awesome that there will be a good out of the box experience on GNOME. Hopefully KDE offers this soon too.

AFAIK it was primarily designed for Wayland, X11 is just coming along for the ride (if it works there).

Finally proper remote desktop, not just screen share.

This is not a proper remote desktop as far as RDP is concerned. More like a misused subset. It is basically treating the screen as a single large raster image that it is compressing and sending down the wire.

It is not aware of RDP related "Window" objects to make informed damage redraw decisions. It is also not aware of i.e GDI drawing operations so these need to be drawn, then scraped, then streamed.

Basically this will be VNC style performance. NoMachine and Windows RDP will beat this.

Wayland compositors work with "dumb buffers" which are great for performance, but do lack the hooks required for a good remote desktop. I think there is hope with RDPEDC but practically speaking, this is never going to be completed in Gnome's, Wayland's or our lifespan (and even then, its *still* not as performant as what could be achieved in Windows NT 4.x TSE from the 90's).

Great, I needed this roughly 3 years ago, but good to see it come nonetheless.
