Phoronix: It's Becoming Possible To Use The Webcam On Newer Intel Laptops With Open-Source Linux

While Intel typically does a great job with their open-source Linux hardware support with enabling all features under Linux and doing so in a timely manner -- often well in advance of the client and server hardware availability -- an exception in recent years has been around the web cam support for many newer Intel laptops. Since Alder Lake an increasing number of Intel-powered laptops have been relying on a raw MIPI camera sensor connected to the IPU6 IP. Intel has been tightly controlling the intellectual property around IPU6 so in turn their Linux support has consisted of an out-of-tree kernel driver and a proprietary user-space component. But thanks to Linaro and Red Hat, an open-source alternative has been forming...

Michael, thank you for the article. The article is missing one important point though. Fedora users can already try out the opensource camera stack through a COPR (Fedora's version of a PPA) repo: https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/co.../ipu6-softisp/

I've encountered these cameras in some newer Dell and Lenovo laptops. They've been a headache to work with, even on Windows (sometimes will appear as properly installed in device manager but still refuse to work).

Yeah, existing cameras were totally not good enough for Intel to develop some blob mess. /s

Good thing it seems AMD laptops are completely fine without it. That's what I'd use anyway.

              Oh wow, so cutting edge.

Speaking of, when is the pencil sharpener supposed to have driver support as well?

Probably due to built in spyware functionality.

Is there at least ONE SINGLE advantage of this new interface to consumers, or is it just an annoyance?

Its 2024 and manufacturers are still choosing to make webcams that don't work with standardized drivers?

Doesn't it have a fallback like UVC?

Glad they don't (yet) do this daft crap with mouse or keyboards
