Phoronix: AMD Reveals Upcoming Catalyst Driver Changes

While AMD does not generally reveal planned changes and feature road-maps publicly for their Catalyst driver in advance of the given driver's public release, over the night they have announced a few upcoming changes. Last night AMD issued a press release announcing a set of changes coming for the 10.2 and 10.3 driver releases, which will be released this month and next, respectively. The announced changes target the Windows Catalyst driver and they include two key features for this month's Catalyst 10.2 and three for next month's 10.3 version...

Just when is it that you are going to realize that catalyst-windoze-blob-hacked-into-linux is *never* going to offer anything exciting for linux users? The excitement is ALL in the OPEN SOURCE driver, which is being developed BY linux users FOR linux users and thus with the purpose of filling OUR needs rather than the needs of big media companies.

Please don't sound so surprised and disappointed that the blob isn't going anywhere useful.

They better should fix all things that prevent Unigene Heaven from running. Also it is lame that xvba has got the same errors since nearly a half year.

          That's a relief!

For one moment there, I was expecting AMD to announce that fglrx would be dropping support for "older" R600 and R700 CPUs, in order to concentrate on Evergreen!

            xserver 1.8 support?

xserver 1.7 is at end of life...

That'll no doubt happen as soon as it's well supported out the box in 2D and 3D (like r300) in the radeon driver

r600/r700-support will be dropped in fglrx as soon as it will be dropped in the windows-drivers. Not sooner, not later.

When it will be dropped in the windows drivers is currently unknown (even to AMD), but it won't be anytime soon while the hardware is still being sold.

There was some talk about that in this thread and the following pages.

If you add bridgman's posts together and ask your crystal ball, you'd see that you needn't worry for at least two more years. In all likelihood quite a bit more. Expecting a drop next month is either being uninformed or downright trolling.
Besides, in two years both the OS drivers and the underlying linux gfx stack will be mature and fast enough that very few consumers will care about fglrx anyway.

(Disclaimer: predictions about the future may or may not apply to the actual timeline you happen to exist in)

LMAO, xserver 1.7 is still being actively developed and is not EOL, especially for the distro versions targeted by Catalyst.

                    Wizard ...

So, a wizard ... it would be great if they fixed the "wizard" that is the Catalyst Control Center to begin with, so that it doesn't look like this anymore:

Bug filed more than a year ago, must be really hard to fix. Perhaps ATI could get a secondary school intern to move the project forward a bit.
